Need more axes!

So, with the dearth of chainaxes for Space Wolves, I was wondering if it's within the rules to use the regular axe bits that come in the set as CCW (not power/runic/frost weapons). Does this violate WYSIWYG? As close combat weapon is a close combat weapon. The axe could already be a power axe, or a frost axe, etc. It seems okay to me, but I wanted to know if there was a general consensus or even a ruling somewhere. I'm still putting together my first army and I have yet to play an actual game of 40K, but I want to make sure I do up the army right the first time!

Thanks!

That is perfectly fine because as you say a CCW can be many things, ranging from knives to full on axes. You can use such things as special close combat weapons as well such as power and frost weapons but then it helps to mark them a bit extra to show that they are special compared to the others.
The only key in terms of close combat weapons (inc power types) is you are consistent. Basically, ensure that all your power weapons/fists are distinctive from close combat weapons. After that, pretty much anything goes as use as a close combat weapon: knives, small pistols, knuckledusters, attack dogs, chainswords, harsh words, spiky elbows, bladed guns etc etc!

Consistancy is the key. As long as you have some method to differentiate between which rules each weapon uses, you could use a feather duster to represent a CCW for all I care.

For instance, I hate power fists. I think the concept is stupid. A fist that does more damage than a blade? :HQ: So all my power weapons are modeled as swords, and all my power fists are modeled as axes.

attack dogs,

That's actually kind of a cool idea!

I LOL'd at harsh words

I agree on consistency if you are going to do that. I'm a stickler of WYSIWYG, so making sure that I (as your opponent) can visually tell the difference is the key thing.

Its annoying as hell to have to ask which one is the guy with the power weapon or just has harsh words.

I paint my weapons differently dependent on their type.

Close Combat Weapons are metal coloured (though considering bronze, but not particularly Norse).

Power Weapons are Dark Angels Green.

Frost Weapons are an Icy Blue (not painted one yet)

Runic Weapons are purple.

I bought a couple of boxes of fantasy Dwarfs to use their axes. Not sure about the current sets, but the old sets came with about 40 axes. I think the current ones do as well, but check first. I think they look way better than chainswords on everything. Used double handed axes and called them power fists and had enough power axes from the regular SW kits to use for power weapons. I think they look good.

Awesome, thanks for the ideas guys. I raided ebay last night and picked up a bunch of different axes and swords from various fantasy packs.

I picked up some of these (ebay links):

Black Orc Weapons

Chaos Marauder Weapons

Dwarf Weapons

As well as a bunch of various Skaven swords/spears/halberds, a set of vampire counts scythes, as well as a couple of flails for good measure. I'm going to be doing a lot of sanding and filing ^_^

Thanks for all the help and replies guys.

You can use literally anything as a CCW. Axe, mace, rubber chicken... But like others have said, make your power weapons clear. Don't have regular axes looking exactly like your frost axes. Ditto with swords and the like.

Arneas, I was going to suggest the Black Orc weapons, but I see you already bought them. Some sweet maces and axes and thick butcher type blades there!

How do folks feel about modeling two one-handed weapons instead of a bolter/CCW or bolt pistol/ccw? At what point does it violate WYSIWYG? I'd love to have some two-sword and two-axe grey hunters, or even a giant two-handed axe or sword.

Can I just pretend one of the two one-handed weapons is a magical teleporting weapon with the same profile as a bolt-pistol? Will it get me dumped from tournaments? Would you allow someone you were playing against to field models like that?

For Grey Hunters I believe it would be ok as the Bolter, Bolt pistol and Close Combat Weapon are it their profile :( If you see a Grey Hunter without a Bolt pistol and Close Combat Weapon because you see his just holding a Bolter you wouldn't say he doesn't have them would you ;)

Well, for a Bloodclaw, Skyclaw, or a Grey Hunter you can get away with it since there is no reasonable way to model EVERYTHING they have on them. However, if I see that set up on an Ultramarines Tac Marine, then something is off. When you move into the highly customizable units (Wolf Guard, TWC, Wolf Lords, etc) is when things get really tight. The common violation of WYSIWYG is typically power weapons/special guns. They look cool, but are quite distinctive and draw the eye. Had that conversation with SW player who had Wolf Claws on Grey Hunters. Of course the reverse is also true, where one "random guy" has a power sword when you see 10 guys with only bolters.

Most of the time, violations are over exuberance in modeling something cool looking or its someone new to the game.

WYSIWYG is really a tournament rule to beat the cheaters back in one area. However, in Beer & Pretzel games, the rule just becomes a common courtesy to your opponents that speeds up the games. Rule of thumb, model/magnetize special weapons, items, or modifications onto models and everything is easier.
