When I first started Space Marines I heard about Space Wolves and thought that was cool, but it was just a little too comic in comparison to some of the other viking era non-ficiton and fiction I've read. However, more than a year later, I really like the re-visioned Pre-Heresy Space Wolves with thier "stormcloud" or "mid night" gray armor and 'murdermake' feel from the HH books.

So, I was influenced by the Space Wolves blog (http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.com/2010...ace-wolves.html) and I decided to make my own Heresy Era Space Wolves. Fate is indeed inexorable it would seem.

I've decided to make an all foot army that will move forward hiding behind a shield wall of 15x Blood Claws with an attached Rune Priest (using Stormcloud) and a Wolf priest with Saga of the Hunter for Stealth. All told, this should give them a 4+ cover save in the open and about 34 inches of frontage for my other Wolves to also get 4+ covers behind. I decided to give them all wooden shields to go along with some of the descriptions from the HH books. Should make a proper skjaldborg for my Space Vikings.

Here's some pic's for the skjaldborg squad:

First I had to make some plates to be molded. Just wooden chits that I carved on:

Then I made my Greenstuff/ Miliput molds - I like pure greenstuff for molds now:

Wasn't too happy with Greenstuff shields - too flimsy

Miliput and GS/MP mixed shields

Battle damage added with a knife individually to the shields so the look different...

I made some hands to hold the shields

Hum... they look a bit big to me... and why would they use wooden shields? They would splinter very easily (unless they have been reinforced with some kind of metal).

I'll follow this project with interest.

being a SW collector my self i have to say that its a cool project, one i started working on a few years back, but i came to realize that, marines with ceramic armour, would never realy need wooden sheilds, 1 their own armour is far, far, far, far better, and 2 any weapon they would face would destroy the wooden sheild in seconds.

but if you get the scale right, the models will look great =) so if u doont care about the protective aspect.. i say go for it =) but make them smaller and thinner... =)

Dually noted on the shield size. I certainly think they are a bit big as well, but I’ve done a bit of research and have found that actual shields would be of a comparable scale – reenactors and Hollywood probably just like their shields small because of weight and visibility of person behind it, so I think it skews our perception about shield size.

I decided on the shield size for a few different reasons though:

1. I definitely want the shields to be the focus of the models themselves. My Grey hunters, Wolf Guard and HQ’s are going to be different conversions and models (Warriors of Chaos Maruader and Warrior + SW Pack kit bashed), the Blood Claws are really meant to look like ‘normal’ space wolves just holding the shields. So I am really not worried about the shields detracting from the models and want the shields to stand out at 5+ feet away.

2. I don’t have an exact page number handy, but I could swear that in “A Thousand Sons” the SW shields mentioned are wooden. I want them to appear to be wooden even from the casual observer. I really liked the part in the book where it describes the Wolves and Sons getting into a skirmish/scrape in front of the Avian’s temple/library. It was a shield wall pressing against kine shields – very irristable force vs immovable object. I wonder if that was meant to imply that the Wolf shields also had a psychic power? or maybe just the Wolves themselves generating a psychic force? maybe I should hang talismans on them...

3. I could only find wooden chits that size or WAY too small. I also intend to use these shields for my Space Wolf vehicles that I will be using for other list variants.

4. YES! They are a bit thick. That is just me not estimating the correct amount of putty to use though – I don’t want them too thin or they may break easily, though I think my Green Stuff/ Miliput mix may be much more durable than I give it credit for

I will try to make them thinner, though, I don’t want them to look like they are holding something bricky – but I like the diameter, it is big, but I think in scale to the Marine – even if in 28mm heroic…

As far as protective aspects go – they are definitely more ornate and really just for that one shield wall squad (15x BC’s + Rune and Wolf priest for Stormcloud and SoH). Shields can be used quite effectively offensively – an aspect missing in 40k save for Arjac – and so I’d think that a heavy wooden one could still be used as a 2nd CCW. At any rate, they still count as having a bolt pistol and chain sword and I am going to have a LOT of fun putting individualistic AUTHENTIC BATTLE DAMAGE! (best Jack Black voice) on each shield. Oh, they are made of “Fenrisian Iron Wood” – see how I did that? ;)

I am going to paint up the test figure soon so you all can see my finished vision – thank you for the responses, not trying to discredit any of them.

Regarding wood being no good for shields in 40K, I'd like to point out that both combat and storm varieties of marine shields are "power shields" and as such, use a energy field as the actual protection. You could make your shields out of frozen wolf poop as along as you can strap a power generator to it (or plug it into one) and it will protect you just as much as any other as long as the field is up.
