Critically_hit
Well, I visit bolter and chainsword allmost daily to get my hobby fix. 2010 saw me chip away at a space marine force, and though I'm quite happy with what progress I've made, I did figure this slow painter needs to kick it up a notch. Enter the painting challenge! Without further ado; I vowed I would paint a tactical marine squad (numbering 10 models) five sternguard veterans a rhino a vindicator For someone with at best a 5 models a month painted rated, I'm up for an intense ride... However, I am still highly motivated to get this done! (I'd really like to avoid that shame and penance stuff I vowed, you see ;) ) I decided to start on the tactical marines, simply because painting white power armor usually takes me quite a while... Here's some pics to give you an idea what I'm on about (i made them clicky thingies, if that's okay): http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2840.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2843.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2842.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2841.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2846.jpg You see brother Phyrus as he tells his squad to stand back while he removes those xenos from cover with righteous flame! And as Phyrus does his thing brother Aer (and some others) follow up on the burst of flame with a grenade before dispensing some 'pax imperialis'. Stay tuned! xscottfergox
I simply love this scheme! Very nice and i like the dry look effect you have managed Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/222027-critically_hits-lpc-log/#findComment-2653145 Share on other sites
Hubernator
White looks a tad lumpy and thick and I've never seen anybody paint just the forearms of a marine before B) It's new I'll give you that, but perhaps the whole arm, or at least hands+elbows are blue too, and maybe the knees. Otherwise, neat. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/222027-critically_hits-lpc-log/#findComment-2653264 Share on other sites
Critically_hit
Thanks for the kind words people! I agree on the chalky whites, sometimes it just doesn't come out right no matter how much I thin my paints. I think I am too careful with undercoat, perhaps a slightly thicker, more even, layer... Be that as it may, time for another update! combat squad (WIP!): Not quite sure on the ones in the back, they suffer from some un-smoothness (if that's a word), I'm reluctant to strip em while I'm allready so short on time but well, I'll give them some more loving attention and then I'll have another look. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2864.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2863.jpg I spent quite a bit of time on the battle damage and general dirtying him up. Then I freehanded my chapter symbol (which still needs some refinement, but I'm saving that for a non work day when my brushhand is a bit more steady). I've yet to come up with a name for this battle brother, but I'm sure something will come to mind. After the first picture, I decided the dirtying could use a bit more oompf. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2857.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2860.jpghttp://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2861.jpg Here's another work in progress. Frankly, I think I've assembled this one with slightly too much death company bits, and as such he looks a little out of place. Either way, he still needs some more highlighting and overall weathering (but I'm sure you get where this is going) http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2862.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/222027-critically_hits-lpc-log/#findComment-2659029 Share on other sites
Hyaenidae
Very nice, the color scheme looks pretty sharp, and the weathering / chipping is great. On a side note, I learned a sneaky little trick for getting white a little smoother. Tamiya makes a snow-colored weathering powder, and gently applying this to those lumpy areas gets it looking much nicer. Just food for thought, brother. Keep up the good work! GooseDaMoose
I like these guys alot. The solid colourfullness of the blue works out pretty well. I would love to see some more battle damage though like the kneeling guy. Good job! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/222027-critically_hits-lpc-log/#findComment-2659049 Share on other sites
Critically_hit
Thanks! The comments are most motivating :D And don't worry, these are all WIP. This battle company has litterally been through hell and back and are now about to dish out their final hammer blow, so yes. I'm going to add loads more dirtying/weathering! I'll be sure to try the tamiya snow stuff trick sometime. It's slightly more difficult for me to get my hands on, so I just might end up carefully sanding the worst bits and re-undercoating them with a nice foundation paint. Critically_hit
Allright. I did severely misjudge my free time for the vow. But I´m not out of the game just yet! Here´s some more shots of the tacticals: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2913.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2912.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2887.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2886.jpg And here's some work in progress shots on the sternguard models. For both them and the vindicator I took a lot of assembly time to make sure I got stuff right. Overall I'm reasonably happy where this is going. The combi flamer is made from a leftover handflamer from the death company kit and the combi-plasma gun from the commander kit. Since the pictures have been taken I did add some more detailling and thin off white layers. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2908.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2910.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2909.jpghttp://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2911.jpg As always, thanks for watching. Chapter Master Kanithon
Love the marines, I know the bane of painting white. just wondering, how do you do the chips in your armour? Natanael
Love it. You got a great scheme there, and your painting is more then sufficient (sp?) to pull it off. Firepower
Wow...very cool. The best color schemes in my mind are at once simple and striking- something you've managed quite well. Wish I had that sort of luck with my own countless failed DIY armies  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/222027-critically_hits-lpc-log/#findComment-2696905 Share on other sites
Critically_hit
First of all; thank you for the kinds words. It is very motivating to get some support! The colour scheme is something that had rested in my head for the better part of my hobby time. I've always wanted to do my very own chapter of space knights, preferably in white. It's an exercise in restraint, quantity contrast as it were, since the electric blue only needs to show a little bit to spice up the figure. @Natanael What do you mean with "(sp?)" @Chapter Master Kanithon I tend to glaze the area where I'll make a chip with some desert yellow. Generally I pick a spot where the painting is damaged or flawed, or just a spot where i feel I need to have some wear and tear. (edges and raised areas, or things like kneepads/shoulderpads). The actual chip is painted in scorched brown. Then I paint a thin line of pure white below the scorched brown to simulate the different way the light would treat a gash. (or at least, I think that's how it works) @epherous There'll be more pics of the vindicator, I promise. What you saw as a pic of when I had just done the metal parts and the rest was still undercoat... I've given it it's first coat of off-white yesterday and am looking in to the recesses, more progress will warrant more pictures. Critically_hit
Spelling! I should have known... Here, have a quick update while you're at it - alas i usually can't get home on time for bright daylight pictures, so bear with me here : http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2934.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2920.jpg Here's some sternguard shots, slowly progressing http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2923.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2925.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2919.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2936.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2926.jpg The sergeant so far is my favourite model of the bunch, still they're all quite nice to paint up... Guess I'll have to make me some more when these are done! http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2927.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/222027-critically_hits-lpc-log/#findComment-2699121 Share on other sites
Firepower
I feel the familiar urge to paint a white marine army....I must force myself to remember the anguish that goes with such folly :(. Very nicely done. Although the wrist motif is still kinda weird, it certainly seems to work well enough. Everything looks ace to me. Critically_hit
@firepower More white is always good! Anguish builds character and such... Another update with some frantic painting. I am still in the race, but barely. I've promised myself that I can skip the bases if I can just get em done... I'm struggling with getting the vehicles even enough to start the weathering, but well, I'm not happy http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2976.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2978.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2979.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2980.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2982.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/222027-critically_hits-lpc-log/#findComment-2706914 Share on other sites
Critically_hit
Been handling a brush all night, finished took a beer. Enjoyed taking some crappy pictures and I guess I'll call it a meagre succes. Not happy with the overall quality but the challenge made me complete more in about one month than I do in an average year. From now on I'll just go for quality though... Here's the bunch: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2991.jpg some more shots: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2983.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2984.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2985.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2986.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2987.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2988.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2989.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/Critically_Hit/th_100_2990.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/222027-critically_hits-lpc-log/#findComment-2708362 Share on other sites
Firepower
Very nice, congrats on a great looking chunk of Astartes death and finishing your vow . I know what you mean about deadlines and such, had the same experience myself not too long ago. The beauty of it is you can easily go back and tidy up the models now without much work. And no, I will not succumb to the lure of white armor! If anything is gonna drag my brush away from the sublime simplicity of painting black, it will be my purple and gold DIY chapter (two pain-in-the-codpiece colors in themselves) ;).
