Hell Talon paintscheme

Hey guys,

So recently I bought a hell talon and I've finished assembling it and getting it ready for painting. So here's my dilemma: I'm going to make this a display piece, and I will paint it to the highest standard that one can find, I.E. NMM if needed, lighting effects, realistic shading/highlighting, you get the gist of it.

So I was carousing CMON and the GW site, and I was inspired by some of the things I found. So here's where I'm at right now with where I want to go with this project.

A Standard FW pic of the hell talon so I can explain this:

As you can see this model has 3 different elevations to cover. The first is the triangle area at the tip of the wings and the base of where all those tubes go in and out, the second is all of the trim of the model, and the third is the lowest, flat layer, in between all of the trim.

So far my idea stands as such:

Inspired by GiganticDark's Space Marine on CMON, I want to replicate this cracked texture on this model, either in white as he has done, or in a greyscale tone.

Examples of crackling, all credit towards GiganticDark:

I want to do this similar effect on layer 2, all of the trim.

On layer 3, all of the flat spaces, I want to do a massive freehand. Inspired by the Harry the Hammer competition on GW's site, I found the two that amazed me the most.

Fil Dunn's Harry the Hammer:

And my personal favorite, Neil Green's Harry the Hammer:

So my question to whoever's made it this far in the post is this: Will this combination of cracked trim and underlying freehand with daemonic faces throughout the panels work, and if not, what should I do to change this? Is this a good idea? What should the first, uppermost layer be, because I was thinking straight up NMM or very weathered metallics.

Do you have any suggestions of your own? Please, do tell, I'm open to anything right now that would look good. I want this model to come out like something thats never been seen before, and if you want to help me make that a reality, well I'll give you due credit once it's done ;)

Thanks for replying!

First off, it's heartening to see someone with this much source material. Second, I'm going to assume you have the time/patience/sanity/GreenStuff to do this.

With that out of the way, I'd probably say you have a few options with this. One of them has you doing this with the second HtH design, and you paint it up as if it were Nurglic. The theme would be 'Pestilence' or more specifically, 'Drought'. Have it be a parched, dessicated daemon whose bombs drop 'earth-salters' or some such things that ruin the land for millenia, something really depressing. Another option would be to do a more Tzeentchy combination of the first HtH pattern. It would look like a crazed combination of writhing, ever-contorting gribbly bitz that don't have anything silly like auspexes. No, this thing has some sort of freakish eye instead, looking at you while it drops a payload that makes it rain on the loyalists like singles at a strip club.

You're the artist, of course, so it's your call, and not even necessarily anything you've read here. Good luck!

Solid Zaku,

I must say, I really, really, really like that "Drought" idea of yours. In fact I'm almost sold on it unless something better comes along.

Until further suggestions, right now I'm dead set on doing that idea. The lowest layer in the 2nd HtH's scheme with the daemons all over the surface, with greyish-green daemons. The next trim layer would see a cracked effect all across the surface, with a kind of off-white color and brown in the crackles, and the highest layer would have a very weathered/rusted gunmetal finish to it.

I really love the idea of "earth parchers." Idk how you sold me on this one so well, I'd really like to see someone else one up it. I've already assembled the model, filled all the gaps, and magnetized all of the bombs and weapon load outs, as I want this to be usable in apoc games (extremely-extremely-extremely carefully that is.)

With a greyish green main color, off white trim, and gunmetal frame, what color should the interior lighting effect on the crew be? Green? Purple? Red?

Again, ideas, suggestions, comments, anything, is extremely welcomed, and please, every idea counts! It's my artistic interpretation but I kind of wanted to have other people have a role to play with this thing's background.
