Darth Illithid's Blood Angels

Evening, everyone. I'm a total newbie to 40k (the tabletop game, I've played a few games of Deathwatch and Rogue Trader, and read a few 40k novels), but I figured I'd try my hand at miniature painting. I haven't gotten a chance to play yet, but I picked up a few minis and the Assault on Black Reach set.

So far all I have finished is a Sternguard Vet and a Lightning Claw Termie, but I'm hoping to have two more Sternguard vets and a couple Assault Marines done this weekend. I jumped in with both feet, though, and bought quite a bit more. Sanguinary Guard, Death Company, Mephiston (I'm leery of painting that one, so I'll leave it for a while), a Venerable Dreadnought, and a Tactical Squad. It's a lot of painting, but I'm having too much fun to stop.

I used to build scale models of aircraft and such, but I'm still not used to brush painting or putting so much detail into something as small as a 40k figure.

So without further ado, here are my first two Marines. Please comment/critique, I haven't done much miniature painting in the past, and these are the only two I thinka re good enough to share so far.

The Termie still needs to have his base finished, but I just got the 40k basing kit, so hopefully it'll get done this week.

Not bad at all, good even red and personally I like an orange highlight so Kudos to you some very nice first attempts( or miniatures at any stage for that matter). As for critique , as you probably noticed GW metallics tend to be gluggy i would advise you to Work on more but thinner coats so you don't lose detail ,and on metal areas inks/washes of a darker colour like black or blue can really be your friend in bringing out details.

The only other comment I can think of ishave you thought about how you feel about sternguard(or for that case any veteran power armour troops0 helm colour? I only say it because some like to paint all veterans with gold helms, while others subscribe to gold is for Honour Guard only.

but enough of that well done they look great and welcometo the hobby and this forum

Thanks!

I'm working on thinner coats with the miniatures I'm working on now. I'm thinking of trying out a wet pallette this weekend even. The GW metallics give me a real headache sometimes, but I'm slowly getting better with them.

I like veteran power armor troops to have the normal helm color, red for tactical, yellow for assault, blue for devastator. It kind of emphasizes that they're regular troops with extra experience rather than being in a special position like the Honor Guard.

I hate you*.

*This is good.

Thanks. :P

very nice!

May I ask for your red recipe, it looks bright enough without being in your face, yet dark enough to still be very darkgrim.

Thanks. Here's my red recipe.

Chaos Black primer

Two thin coats of Mechrite Red

Two thin coats of Blood Red

Overall coat of Baal Red

Highlight with Blazing Orange

Heavy wash of Baal Red in the recesses
