Corvi Sanguine
What exactly happens when a new Chapter is founded? Does it mean that a previous chapter has a surplus of Astartes? How is the command formed? I know how the second founding happened but then do other founding work the same? Could a brand spanking new chapter be founded from a chapter from the first founding? Or would they come in order, say 22nd founding came from a 21st founding Chapter? Captain Juan Juarez
Generally speaking the HLoT at a certain time - then deemed a Founding - decide that the Imperium need a few more Space Marine Chapters. It's possible that a Chapter might be founded outside a Founding but only for the direst of threats or a very specific reason. The accepted Liber principle is that a Training Cadre from the Chapter providing the geneseed is used in the foundation and training of that new Chapter. Genetic heritage is basically from the Primarch, thus also the original Legion, down to the Chapter that provides the geneseed: descended from Robute Guilliman (Ultramarines), by way of the Novamarines. I would say that most new Chapters are chosen from an already established successor; I doubt an First Founding "Chapter" would be used, but it isn't totally impossible. Generating Random Name...
Theoretically a chapter could be created from any other chapter...Whether the HLoT (And AdMech) chooses that chapter is another matter. I believe that the command is a captain (Or other leader) and some other people (Libby, Chaplain, etc), they train the chapter then go back to their parent chapter. There's a section on it in the DIY chapter guide. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/222174-founding-a-founding/#findComment-2655650 Share on other sites
Heru
It's not temporary, the only official stuff we actually have on it doesn't say anything about going the "teachers going back". 3rd Founding: Founded under the command of Fafnir Rann, reputedly the most vicious of Rogal Dorn's later captains... 25th Founding: Founded as a Chapter from 'whole cloth' which is to say without a specific named predecessor Chapter. Instead they were created from a gene-stock issue, their initial command and training structure composed of honoured warriors drawn form several Ultramarine successor Chapters. Temporary training cadres were merely a Liber theory, and in some cases a preference of certain authors. It is still viable for use with a DIY Chapter but it's more official for the cadre to stay. Generating Random Name...
So they become the first chapter master, and whoever is best suited after they die is the second?
