Gumo9
I'm going to have a Cities of Death game soon and I was wondering what experiences everyone has had in this theatre of operations. What kind of lists do you run for urban ops and how do the Sons of Sanguinius fare in this environment compared to other game types? The game will be 1750 points and I will probably be against Tyranids by the way. Zeller
No tanks unless it's a vindy with siege shield. Though I could see the merit of a BBQ Baal with no sponsons. Dreadnoughts will be your slogger's friends. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/222188-new-theatre-of-operations/#findComment-2655959 Share on other sites
vharing
Jump packs troops are also kind of out due to dangerous terrain tests almost everywhere. Tabgoi
In the land of broken line of sight, the Furiouso is king (any Dread really, but especially the Furiouso). Normally against nids I would form a line of bolters to chew them up, but with the minimal LOS I would run as many flamers (hand and regular, no heavies except on vehicles and termies) is you can pack and make them pay for their insolence. Hit them with the flamers and charge in for the kill. Whirlwinds are nice for ignoring cover, and they can tear up nid troop choices. Actually I think you could get a ton of milage with sternguards in a city fight due to their special ammo that ignores cover saves. I love my tac squads, but in the city I would run assault squads and just plan on where you are going to get them immobilized. If you can use them to block off a nice couple alleys to force them around terrain to give you more chances to put rounds in them before engaging in close combat. It also gives you better control of your DC by letting you block off approaches to funnel your DC different directions than what would ordinarily be the closest unit. As stated earlier the burnanator baal would have a huge impact here (just be careful with its positioning), as would a redeemer if you actually wanted to put the points into one to watch things just melt. But I would stick with dreads above tanks and use cheap transports. Do not think of the transports as troop carriers, think of them as moble terrain that you WANT to get destroyed. Ideally you funnel them into one area and force their troops to enter a meat grinder composed for a pair of furiousos armed with blood talons, but that is really dependant on how much terrain you are going to use. When I do a city fight at home, it can get a bit claustrophobic, which I like. Wysten
This is one of the few places were I imagine terminators would be king, limited line of site, high toughness and strength makes it capable of breaking into ruins, bubble wrapping your dreads and generally providing raw melee muscle where needed. With feel no pain they are all but unshakeable. Chairman_woo
So...............no line of sight.........so no rage..... GO GO POWER DEATH COMPANY! Seriously tho death company and death dreads should come into their own in cityfight. grazer
Sternguard with heavy flamers would be pretty spectacular as well! They are assault weapons after all. BrotherMoses
I would run a dreadnought and Baal Predator heavy force. Something like this: Reclusiarch 5 man death company w/ power fist death company dreadnought w/ hvy flamer and blood talons drop pod for dc 5 man tactical squad w/ razorback w/ hvy flamers and dozer blade 5 man tactical squad w/ razorback w/ hvy flamers and dozer blade 5 man tactical squad w/ razorback w/ hvy flamers and dozer blade Baal Pred w/ flamestorm Baal w/ flamestorm 2xdozerblades for Baals. 2x furioso dreads kitted out with any combination of free gear 2xdroppods for furiso dreads vindicator w siege shield whirlwind Thats a 1695 pt list with 55 points left over for you to spend on upgrades as you like. Made it spammy so you could take stuff out and sort of modularize it. This is just a quick spammy list with no regard to what you actually have ready/own. I also advocate the following unites be considered for possibles in a BA CoD list. dreadnoughts of all sorts Sanguinary priests are always nice Scouts: I'm usually not a fan of scouts, but with the abundance of cover they could really shine here. If you like them now is the time to field them. I just hate their models, but if you have ever wanted to do an all scout list I think CoD is the time to do it. They're cheap and can infiltrate some heavy firepower into good positions and Move through Cover would be a big asset here. Landspeeders. Skimmers will rock CoD if they can avoid being sniped. Shouldn't be too hard. Storm Ravens. See above about skimmers. Really do like the Land speeder thing though. Preds w/o sponsons are more narrow and better suited for terrain. Flamestorm cannons in CoD = lotsa dead bugs Vindicator. When tyranids get bottlenecked these could be awesome. Placement is key. Whirlwind. Often overlooked. Indirect fire is a major asset in CoD Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/222188-new-theatre-of-operations/#findComment-2656140 Share on other sites
Ebsolom
Cities of Death is my favourite type of environment to play in, especially if the terrain is pretty dense. I wouldn't totally discount the use of Tactical squads though, 10 man Tacs in Rhinos with flamer, combi flamer and fist can do drive by shootings in the safety of their armoured shell. Once the Rhino is destroyed a squad of rapid firing bolters really puts the hurt on nids. I agree with the above posters on the Furiosos with Frag cannon and Hvy flamer combo - it it lethal! Drop them in pods and set up road blocks with them, forcing them to deal with them or move around. DC dreads with Talons are more survivable in a city environment due to the abundance of cover and also have fleet. Would also be tempted to fit in a LR Redeemer for a terminator assault squad with attatched priest. Scouts also as BrotherMoses has mentioned... there is a Sniper strategem (if they're being used) which allows your snipers to ignore cover saves! Very handy for longshots on his monstrous creatures or other annoying units. Anyway, have fun and good luck brother! Gumo9
Excellent tips and suggestions everyone, thanks ! Had my game tonight and really enjoyed it. My opponent's army was something like this... Hive Tyrant Trygon Prime Carnifex Zoanthrope Venomthrope 2 large squads of Genestealers (one with Broodlord) Bucket loads of Termagants More Hormagaunts than you can shake a stick at I normally field the obligatory fast moving assault troops, Baals and stuff for regular games so I decided to go for slightly different approach for Urban Ops. My list was: Dante Assault Marines (10) with 2 Melta Assault Marines (10) with 2 flamers Sergeant with hand flamer Terminators (10) one with Cyclone launcher and another with Assault Cannon (combat squaded) Assault Terminators 3 with Lightning Claws, 2 with SS and TH Furioso with fists (I normally use talons so I decided on a change for this one) Dreadnaught with Multimelta and Stormbolter Dreadnaught with Assault Cannon and flamer I won't do a complete report (way to late and I'm now far too tired!), but here are a few highlights. I was really pleased with the assault terminators, they butchered their way from one end of the table to the other before being taken down by sheer weight of numbers from the Termagants and Hormagaunts in a nasty multiple assault. Dante and his team came in by deep strike and immediately took several wounds off the Hive Tyrant, killing it a round later in hand to hand. The AC Dreadnaught killed three genestealers with three marvelous rending rolls before charging in alongside the Furioso for close combat. The Furioso did brilliantly against the genestealers and whittled them down slowly but surely, shrugging off numerous hits including quite a few with rending claws. The AC Dread took a critical hit (damn rending claws again!) and exploded taking 4 genestealers with it. My second assault squad was jumped on by the second brood of genestealers and by the end of the game there was just 3 genestealers left and my trusty sergeant clutching his hand flamer and steaming chainsword. I made a few schoolboy errors in this game though. As it was a "capture the flag type game" where most unit types could plant a flag if they occupied a ruin I should have run my multimelta dread into a nearby ruin to win the game. Alas the rage took me and I couldn't resist stopping to blast a passing Trygon Prime instead ! Match result was... a draw (2 flags each). So, to summarise my first Cities of Death game, it was great fun and gave me opportunity to try units that I wouldn't normally bother with on a more open battlefield. Next time I want to get Astorath on the table with a few units of death company and make use of all that blocked line of sight that was mentioned in an earlier post.
