My first LPC

Sanguinarian

Recommended Posts

So I received my Stormraven and DC Dread this past Wednesday - luckily the Mrs. wasn't home - and smuggled them into the house and hid them amongst my other boxes of GW stuff. Although I forgot to rip off the plastic so they would look like old stuff, I successfully packed them into a suitable carry-all ready to assemble at work today. I'm a Retail Manager and times are slow, so I pass my time doubling as a tech-adept. ;)

Steps 1-4 of the Storm Raven Assembly went smoothly other than my debating myself to leave the top of the hull off so that I can paint the innards. The rear access door just sits in its half-hinges - not sure why it doesn't have the same holes as the front ramp, but we'll see. [EDIT: Changed picture]

So far, with the hull and tail section assembled, it seems as if our Dread will just simply hang from a single magna-grapple which sits on the underside of the tail section. I will most definitely have to devise a better way to transport him as I just can't fathom this thing breaking orbit with 12 occupants and 1 Dread literally hanging on by a thread!?! That might have worked for R2-D2, but not one of our Ancients. I'll most likely concoct a carriage of sorts.

Lastly, here's a picture of me as 1SGT of the Knights of Blood.

Nice haul mate! Very sneaky smuggling it past the missus ;) . I'm tempted to model a chain with a magnet attatched to replace the magna grapple gubbins at the rear but would also mean placing a magnet on top of my dreads also, I'll see how it goes. I was also a little confused as to why the rear ramp didn't fit like the frontal assault ramp :nuke: , I can't see it standing up to much handling so I may glue it shut. The serg is looking good B)

Thanks for the compliments on my mini-me, brothers.

@ DarkMark: Unfortunately, (or fortunately) the wife isn't gaudy on herself as much as she is on the little 4-yr-old princess that has us at her beck-and-call!!! I have that situation under control as I recently let her paint over a few of my unused SMs into her very own pink and blue Legion of Hanna Montana. :)

@ Ebsolom: I think I might just glue the rear door shut as well. As for the magnet, I'm going to play around with that or create a crate-like apparatus or something like rescue choppers use. The scale definitely doesn't allow a Dread to load up while the bird is on the ground.

@Kurb: The magna-grapple doesn't work for me. It reminds me of the giant crane at scrapyards. That's no way to stow our Venerated Champions of Death!!!

Here are some snaps of my DC Rhino and the new bird.

I also plan and using magnets on the wings to make storage alot easier.

~Side access doors~

Logistically and realistically I know if the Hurricane Bolters are in place that would render the side access doors unusable. But since there's nothing that says that it does, I've devised a way to implement both.

I simply - certainly not expertly - notched out the door panel so that it fits around the notches of the Hurricane sponson. Then I shaved off the bottom of the sponson to expose the hinge of the door. I plan on adding a metal chain of sorts to incorporate the winch above the door. That way the door will only open 90-degrees as to never allow the Blessed Bolters from ever touching the ground. I'll have to Search the forums for the article on how to pin the door so that it opens and closes.

Here's a rough look with the door open. The door panel is not tack-welded to the sponson yet, nor are the hinges pinned yet.

Assembled my DC Dread with blood talons, heavy flamer, magna grapple and searchlight.

So now I have an SR (minus the topside turret, side doors and air dam) and a DC Dread assembled with the Assault Termies being ordered next payday.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh275/MFUCOMMISH/W40K%20-%20The%20Sanguinius%20Files/1297635375.jpg

While "zooming" around the room with my new models I imagined a few better ways for our Dreads to ride their new bird.

1. Give him a strap and he can ride bareback on the tail!

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh275/MFUCOMMISH/W40K%20-%20The%20Sanguinius%20Files/1297629501.jpg

2. He can literally grab a ride while hanging out the side door.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh275/MFUCOMMISH/W40K%20-%20The%20Sanguinius%20Files/1297629503.jpg

3. Or he can fanagle his way between the rear landing gear ala classic stowaway.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh275/MFUCOMMISH/W40K%20-%20The%20Sanguinius%20Files/1297629505.jpg

Actually after trying this last way out, I think I'm going to lose the landing gear and just glue the skidplates to the fuselage as if they're "in the upright position" and then rig up an actual magna grapple to the top of the Dread along with a claw to hold him firmly against the rear-access door. This way he's not just hanging by a thread.

Time to basecoat them and see which way inspires me the most.

one thing tho you have a dread with a magna grapple with blood talons hope your going against small vehicles or str 6 will get you no where once in contact.

I agree. Had this yesterday, my dread ended up in close combat with a rhino for two rounds because the melta gun missed and I had to charge thanks to rage. :)

Well, nice progress man! One or two things if you don't mind:

Your camera makes your red look orange...Just wanted to say that. :)

When doing metals, I think it looks very nice if you dry-brush it on(actually, you'll have to add some water in the end), get a solid foundation with the metal, wash it black and highlight as normal(speak=not drybrushing). Makes for great TT quality. ;)

Do you plan to add further highlights to the red? I'd go for a mix of mechrite and blood red on the edges, only to get some colour in there.

Well, keep it up man, for the the Primarch, the Legion and the subforum!

Since seeing your dc dread I've added the smoke launchers and searchlight, I wasn't sure where to put them before.

Also why are you so concerned about where the dread goes, is it not ment to be inside with everything else? Am I missing something here, do we have to have our dreads on the SR when playing? :s

Good points on the Magna Grapple, cousins. I honestly planned on using that to punch an MC in the face moreso vehicles. ;) As far as vehicles are concerned, that's why I have a pair of DC Dreads - one for each type of threat.

@Snorri - doesn't Rage only stipulate we move toward the nearest LOS enemy, not shoot and/or assault?

Not worried, was just being critical of the design of how our ANcients are to be delivered to the enemy's face. I would have prefered a separate enclosed compartment or at least a harness and basket kind of contraption as opposed to being "magna grappled" to the tail section!?! :tu:

Well, I've looked it up in that special case. The USR forces any model with that rule to move and run(if chosen) towards the closest visible enemy model, and if in charge range, to charge that model. But in the second game we played, the DC dread killed a whole squad of Grey Hunters, 3 unwounded Thunderwolfs plus the Lord! Made me a pretty happy chap and won the game for me! :Troops:

But yeah, we don't have to shoot at the closest model, but nothing else was in range...so I said : it and tried my best to get rid of the rhino.:HS:

The Rage special rule does not make you have to charge. All it says about the assault phase is: "In the Assault phase they must always consolidate towards the closest visible enemy."page:76 of the small rulebook.

So you never have to charge if you don't want to, and you can pick which enemy you do charge.

Sang bro, when painting red X's on vehicles do you use masking tape or something? I'm wondering on how to get them über straight!!

Of course I did! ;)
