Edemia
Hey guys. I've recently come up against something that I never had any real problems with before. I've been in the hobby for coming up 9-10 years now, and have been more of an avid painter/collector than a gamer. I was mainly about the fantasy battle stuff, but then went over to 40k. I've dabbled with collecting varying armies, both Imperium and Xenos, but when the Blood Angels came along, I felt like I had found my niche. I had a few games with them (even took them to Conflict Scotland last year) and fell in love with them. Even now I still buy Blood Angels models, or models to paint up as Blood Angels. Every time I think about a new hobby project, it always involves the Blood Angels in some respects. But the problem I have now is that over the past couple of months, I feel like - well to put it bluntly - I can't be "bothered" anymore. I keep saying that I'm going to paint something, but when it comes down to it I either get really bored or end up doing something else entirely and it's driving me nuts. My hobby used to be my quiet time, and I could only really chill out and relax with a paint brush in my hand. I've had a few things going on lately with my partner being in hospital and starting a new job next week, but I really can't understand why I feel like I've gone off my hobby. Anyone else had a problem like this? What do you guys do to keep motivated? Any help you could give a fellow Son of Sanguinius would be greatly appreciated! liberate_tutame
Yep! I've definitely had the same problem. I've just gone through a really busy month, and am not in the mood to go back and start painting. Generally what I do is just stop. Two weeks or maybe a month later I'll play a game and then that'll start me thinking about what I want to improve in my army and I approach the whole painting aspect with a fresh eye and fresh enthusiasm. Of course this is also speaking as a person that took a decade long hiatus from the game! Perhaps your tastes are changing, maybe you need a new hobby? Either way, you shouldn't do something you don't enjoy in your spare time.
Ebsolom
I've been through it a couple of times myself where I've lost interest in 40k. Take a break from the modelling and painting for a while, maybe read some of the Black Library books or just leave it altogether. When I stopped I played a lot of the Total War series on the PC, this helped as it's a totally different ball game using historical armies and reenacting famous battles, just a completely different pace but it kept my interest in the strategy side of things going. After I had conquered all before me I felt my 40k mojo coming back. Sometimes it just takes a little something to pique your interest in it again. Pistorius
I've gone through some dry spells as well, but my mojo always comes back. Here are some of my motivators: 1. Reading Whte Dwarf. Seeing all those painted armies and terrain just keeps me going. It's why I still shell out for it despite falling quality. 2. Read a Black Library novel. As a narrative gamer, I really get worked up by delving into the background. 3. Think about how awesome my army will look when entirely painted. I paint to a decent enough standard that I'm usually proud to deploy my latest project. 4. Participate in a tournament. I'm not uber-competitive, and really despise beardiness in general, but the requirement of having everything painted in time really helps me power through stuff. 5. Work on a different project. I play the LotR game as well, so I've usually got three different projects sitting on my workbench at any one time. If I get bogged down on one, jump to the next one for a bit. 6. Start a hobby blog or WIP thread. Nothing like random strangers from the intarwebz stroking your ego. Actually, I recently shelved my personal bog in favor of a cooperative blog with my gaming buddies. We've been keeping each other motivated 7. Get in a fight with my wife. She gets annoyed when I spend too much time on my hobby, so I go work on stuff to get her goat and relieve stress. When I finish what I'm working on or get over myself, then we get to make up. :) That's all I can think of for now. Hope that helps!
Aeterni
Mate, I understand that feeling. I would suggest you stop painting and what not. Spend more time with your partner and just sit there quietly by their side until they get out of the hospital. With your free time you could spend it preparing for your new job, I'm assuming you know what that is and you could check up the relevant by-laws that govern that job or your companies rules. Then when your partner gets out, you could pick up the brush and see how you feel. If you don't feel good, then put it down and wait another week. If you are adventurous, you could try to get your partner to paint with you. That's always a huge inspiration :)
Demoulius
i think every gamer gets these from time to time. having had a fair few myself all i can say is: keep coming to the b&c, keep reading the white dwarf etc etc. if you have friends that play keep seeing threm on a regular basis as well, even if your not playing :) all those things help to keep motivated alot. a time i couldnt be arsed (just started a new job like your about to do) and quite honostly couldnt find the time. i stepped in the local GW after like...2 months, saw some friends playaing and BOOM! motivated again :) (fact that a new campaign had just flared up helped alot as well though :) )
BrotherMoses
Pack your models in the attic. I promise they'll be there when you want them again.
Brother_Mike
God...if I actually was INTO GW stuff for the past 8-9 years, I've little money and even less relationships. I've been on and off with my Warhammer obsession for a great deal of my life. When I'm into it, I'll be on forums everyday and playing games every weekend. But when I'm not into it, I get to spend more time with other "important" crap like a social life that isn't filled with nerds and dice =P. Word of warning though: Don't sell off armies just because you think your finally done with GW, because if your anything like me, you won't. That's what happened to my High Elves and Blood Angels...I miss my Blood Angels t.t
Emperors Immortals
I agree with some of the above posters. Have a normal life outside WH, go out with your GF or wife (or both if there cool with it :P ) Spend time outside doing something like paintball, rockclimbing, bonsai or just watcha few dvd's or go to the pub with some mates. And lastly, i cannot recommend hihgly enough that you put armies into storage and DONT sell them, youll never get a good price and youll always wish you still had them. Remeber - dont forget to breath.
Gv0zD
Interest rises and it falls sometimes. I've been in a hobby for more than ten years, and I had my own moments of zero-interest in it. Switch to anything other. About a year and a half ago I was anticipating the new C:BA and longed to get my hands on the new models and army etc etc... but then I got bored of that anticipation... I switched to wonderful games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 and had a good time then, I spend a great deal of my time reading books on history of warfare, I got into Warhammer Fantasy. In those other things I found a new dose of inspiration that boosted my interest in 40k. Just give yourself and your plastic soldiers some break. Don't quit the hobby, in time you'll find yourself zealously painting new army :)
Emperors Immortals
Some other things i did in my off time (5 years) was earn a psych degree, teach myself to paint canvas competently, learn how to make my own miniatures on a sprue (my modeling is not yet good enough to show :) ) and strip down and repaint/recondition a original 750cc Triumph. Theres a whole lot of life out there - just have fun ;)
Electrolytes
Just take a break, lay off 40k and the hobby for a bit. It happens to everyone i think. I usually stumble on a picture of a really well painted blood angel or a really cool looking conversion and I then jump to my "paint station" and start painting again! You will get bored of anything if you do too much of it!

dreadmad
I'd say just take a break until something captures your intrest, I stopped playing 3 months ago, and then walked into my local store recently and saw the new Dreadnought kit and I now have a project to finish (because you can never have too many dreads :P ) Now I have the enthusiasm again, and I'm back in the hobby, it just takes (in my case) a new shiny toy ahaha. Sanguinarian
Pack it all up nice and careful like the precious jewels that they are. Getting them out of sight and out of mind will let you concentrate on your mate's healing and your new job. Then, when the time is right, jump back in, we'll still be here - LWATCDR. :) Health, wealth and prosperity to you and yours.
