Attaching plastic minis to resin bases

Recommended Posts

I've been having some issues the last few days while building my skyclaw pack. I normally paint up to include all but the minor details then i base them and finish the detailing. However the I've recently started using resin bases to compliment the mini and for some reason they keep falling off the base. I wasn't able to find a solution to this issue on the site because my searchfu is weak. I've taken to drilling a hole in the base itself filling the whole with superglue then green stuff makning a foot impression into the greenstuff. Then i wait for the Greenstuff to harden and paint then glue the mini onto the little base i made out of G/S. I'm sure i'm doing a much more complicated method than i should be.

Anyways whats the best way to attach minis to resin bases?

I've done my 36 terminators with my own resin bases and had the same problem.

If you need to base them to get some games and are not done yet with the painting: a drop of superglue on 1 foot will hold it in place and will be easy to snap away to continue painting if you want.

If you want a permanent bonding, drill both the base and the foot of the model, put a small bit of wire on the foot, glue with SG... when dry, glue the pin to the base.

This should be more than enough :)

I bought a standard wire at a cheap store (those that come in round bundles, 1mm think)... I can pin till the rest of my life for 2 Euros xD

Suggestion: buy 1mm AND 2 mm drills. Its a cheap item (at most, 1 euro each) and just in case the wire you buy it a bit over 1mm you can just make the hole a bit bigger :)

Paper clips I think are too thick and hard to cut with clippers (though you should be using something harder than clippers so you don't take the edge away from your plastic clippers).

Glad it helped :)

Superglue (and other similar bond-all glues) is the only kind you can use to affix plastic to resin. Plastic glue won't work, since the resin won't melt and bond to the plastic like plastic does.

I've never seen GS to work, since nothing is actually being glued together, but that's just me.

GW's pin drill comes with a 1mm bit, perfect for paperclips.

Most model shops will sell a pin vice with reversible jaws for 0.5-3mm for the same price, and a pack of drill bits in 0.1mm increments will cost ~£10.

Then you can start a collection of wire:electronics shops such as Maplin/Radioshack do small spools of wire, guitar string is super stiff, copper wire is easily re-shaped, and enamelled copper wire from beadwork shops makes great pre-painted cables/pipes.

Definitely worth the short time it will take to get good at it, much shorter learning curve than greenstuff!

for pinning models together i always use paperclips as they are SUPER strong when cut so small. this is a great help if you are pinning large metal models. buy a pair of real clippers from the hardware store though as paper clips will ruin some of the lighter weight clippers people use for plastic.
