White Scars army pics

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I had the camera out and wanted to get some decent pics of some of my White Scars army. I had an army of them back in 3rd edition, but then sold them. When 5th rolled around I started them back up. Hope you enjoy, C&C welcome.

Bike Squad

I wanted to take a different spin on them than I had in my original army. I wanted to add as much realism as I could, figuring white armor would be muddy and damaged pretty much instantly, especially when on an off-road bike. So, I wanted to keep the white nicely shaded and smooth, but still make their armor look 'lived in'.

Tactical Squad

I was going for a non-standard theme for this squad, so I used older Mk armor bits and assault torsos with the eagles removed to represent the cabling on mkIV and VI chestplates.

Rhino

The main challenge on the rhino was breaking up all the white. To me rhinos and LRs are almost too boxy and can be boring without some bells and whistles, hence the red pattern and copious weathering.

Drop Pod

I'm pretty happy with how my drop pods turned out. I figured anything intentionally shot into the ground from orbit is going to take a beating, lol, so I tried experimenting with scorch marks and severe chipping.

Landspeeders

Landspeeders are tricky in that they will take plenty of abuse, but wouldn't be muddy, so I ended up using the same chipping technique as on the pods.

Thanks guys, let me know what you think.

I think your vehicles are dead on. Your marines, however, gradate from down in the mud filthy to completely spotless and I think it spoils the illusion. These guys are going to pat their heads when giving silent commands, popping their helmets on and off, reaching up to adjust this or that... there ought to be some smudging on the helmets and upper torsos as well. Not as much, but a streak here and there.

Hmm, I see your point. Frankly I left the upper areas clean because A) I wanted you to still be able to see the shading (which was kind of a pain), and B ) I didn't want to have to fix any errors on the white if I got too crazy with the mud (which is also a pain, lol). However, you are probably right that a 'less is more' approach of smudges or gunk here and there would help the overall look.

First of all, good job on tackling one of the most notorious paint schemes of the 1st Foundings. I've only dabbled in white armor myself, and hated it, so bear in mind I sympathize with your difficulties.

That being said, I agree that the infantry are unusually clean from the waist up. The rhino's top is also unusually bereft of battle damage (and you seem to have overlooked painting the headlights).

I'd 1) go back and add a bit of wear/mud/grit to the 'shields' on the front of some of those bikes, 2) maybe do another blue wash (at least that looks like what you did) to add some more depth to the white, particularly on helmets, and 3) do the same for the fronts of the landspeeders, and 4) drill the barrels.

Good job so far, now let's see you make it great

The drop pod is outstanding, really remarkable wear work on that! The marines look very nice too, I know what a horrible pain it is to paint and shade white. My only criticism is that the muddying on the marines and on the bikes looks in places like a dirty ink or paint wash rather than splattered mud or gunk. That may be the intent, but to my eye it would be more appealing if it looked more like spatter or spray.

Also love the underslung lascannon. Very nice touch, and looks cool.

Thanks all for the comments!

@Firepower: A personal weakness of mine is hurrying things 'out the door' to get prepped for tourneys and the like, hence the missed healights. Plus painting little details like that is very tedious for me. I usually do drill the barrels of my models but looking at the pics I absolutely missed the rhino and some of the bikers. The shading is blended SW grey with a thin line of 2:1 SW Grey:Shadow Grey to make it pop.

@Direach: The mud is different layers of a charadon granite wash, so you are right. I used Tamiya white primer which goes on extremely smooth, so much so that paint can smear and it ended up looking a bit different than I intended. I'm still happy with it and it wouldn't have been a spatter effect anyway, but I agree some spatters mixed in with the muddy film might enhance things. It's most noticeable on the rhino, it needs a quick pass with the airbrush along the bottom I think to enhance the dirt a bit.

lol, the lascannon was a kitbash of the moment because I needed a las and didnt have one on hand. However, I do also hate the real lascannon because it obscures the marine's face, and it fit the older style equipment look of the squad. For being rigged up people seem to like it; I get a lot of comments on it during games.
