Elfatto's project log

I've decided to start a project log as motivation to get my stuff painted, since the best part about warhammer isn't painting miniatures, it's showing everyone online that I did.

Anyways, I've gotten off my butt and made some progress on my pre-heresey emperor's children. Got the basecoat and black lining done for my two rhinos. Next step is hilighting.

Got 2/4 missile launchers done for a devastator squad. I also just noticed from the picture that I forgot to paint the purity seal on the kneeling marine, I'll get to that eventually.

Finished some of the gold trims and legion symbol on my vindicator, though I want to add some more gold designs on it. I want to do something on the siege shield, maybe a gold border with swirls in the corners? That sounds suitably fabulous for the emperor's children.

Finally, because I was getting a bit sick of painting purple I started painting up a squad of death guard terminators, with the intention of maybe starting a death guard army if I enjoyed painting these five guys. The scheme I was aiming for was the pre-heresey death guard colours but noticeably corrupted. The first model I did was a bit of a learning process, as I've never painted anything in light colours (off-white in this case) before, and I was trying out weathering and rust streaks using oil paints for the first time as well. All in all, I'm pretty happy with how this first termi turned out. I've got the torsos and legs for the next two termis assembled, suitably hacked up with damage, primed and base coated so far.

Really liking the mini's so far and I'm looking forward to seeing more

(PS. What are oil paints I have never heard of them being used on GW models before and I am pretty clueless about paints outside of the ones Games Workshop supply)

The Emperors Children look magnificent! A 'how to' would be much appreciated on the purple. What size force are you painting up? Are you going to use the new Forgeworld models throughout?

Also liking the Death Guard Terminator. I can see where you're going with the grime and damage but think it's a little dark and the rust is a bit bright. Perhaps paint one up in traditional preheresy Death Guard colours, which are still a bit weathered and then start applying washes, oils, powders etc on top?

Whatever you decide to do please continue to post pictures of your progress. A subtitle on your topic title saying that you're doing Heresy/Preheresy armies might draw more viewers and fans too :)

Thanks for checking out my log guys. I made some progress on the rhinos and did the first layer of hilights on them (procrastinating on my own progress log? that's pretty low I know) It's a bit too late now but I'll post some pictures up tomorrow. If I do a sequence shot of each step it should give a pretty good idea of how I painted the purple. For those that asked, I have most of my 1500 point army done, I posted some pics of them a few weeks ago here. I also posted a quick rundown of the purple in that thread somewhere.

A friend of mine started using oil paints to weather his IG tanks and it looked really good, so I decided to use the idea on my Death Guard. The method he and I used was based of a tutorial he found here. Basically, the oil paints should let you blend things like streaks of weathering or damage more naturally. I haven't yet modified the tutorial to something I'm really comfortable with in a small infantry model vs. a tank, but that's why the terminators are a bit of a learning project for me right now.

I'll attempt to do a step by step pictorial guide as I finish the rhinos in this post. I will add more through edits to this specific post as I get more done. This is the same method I used for all of the models pre-heresey emperor's children models, both infantry and vehicles. Here's what I have so far.

1) Primed the models black*

2) Base coated with liche purple. I went all out with the base coat, not really bothering to leave any areas black, since I like to go over and black out the gaps, bits that will be metallic, etc. after anyways. I personally use a size 2 flat art brush for this (no fancy airbrush for me), so I did three coats of watered down purple to get a nice smooth base colour.*

*I didn't think to take photos of the rhinos for these steps, as I had already got to step 3 by the time I thought of doing a progress log, but these are the most straight forward steps so who really cares.

3) Went the gaps, lowered edge areas on the armour and areas that will be gold or metallic with black. I tried to be somewhat neat with this, but I'm not really sweating it if the black lines aren't completely straight and parallel with the armour edges, or are kind of bumpy. If any screw ups are really noticeable, it's not a big deal and they're easily fixed by going over the mistake area with liche purple.

4) A first hilight with a mix of approximately 75% liche purple and 25% tentacle pink. It came to my attention that GW discontinued tentacle pink when I tried to get another pot a few months ago, but the Vallejo game colour range has a direct equivalent called squid pink. If you don't have access to Vallejos for whatever reason, a 50/50 mix of warlock purple and skull white is a pretty close equivalent as well, though wouldn't recommend using a mix because the pink is a main component colour I use for blending/mixing other colours in this paint scheme, so it is best if it stays consistent for all the minis you plan to paint. I paint this first hilight on fairly wide since three other hilight layers will be layered on top of it. Similarly to the blacklining step, I do this first hilight fairly quick and dirty, since it will be barely noticeable on the finished model. Any mistakes that look really bad I go back and straighten out with liche purple. I personally prefer a bright cartoonish look to my emp's kids, so I hilight almost every armour edge on the model. If you want something less cartoonish you may only want to hilight the edges that would actually be hit by a light source from above.
