The Wolves of Fenris

Casual Heresy

Recommended Posts

Greetings Wolf-brothers!

As a loyal servant of Harald Deathwolf, I plan on having plenty of our favoured Lupine companions in my collection. I'm already seeing to Thunderwolves but I need your help in regards to thier smaller cousins.

I plan on having plenty of Fenerisian Wolves to lope around with Thunderwolf characters and for screening and other uses. I plan on painting each pack as a diffrent breed of Wolf. I specifically want to do ones that exsist in the fluff before I start on real world breeds. Apart from the fabled Blackmanes, can anyone tell me of any other breeds native to Fenris? If so could you tell me thier colouration?

I thank you in advance for your aid in this matter brothers.

As far as I know there aren't many Fenrisian Wolves of great renown save Freki and Geri which were pack mates to Lemun Russ and Svangir and Ulfgir which are mentioned in the unit entry for Ragnar Blackmane. I can't find any other info on the latter. As far as painting info, look up Timber Wolves on Google. As far as differenciating the packs from each other maybe color any armor they might have differnt from one pack to another. Painting the entire packs's fur the same palette might look a bit boring.
Thunderwolves

Blackmanes

"Rhino-sized"

"Average-sized"

Technowolves

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

And of course there are the Grey Wolves that our Grey Hunters are named after, in addition to Thunderwolves and the Blackmane Wolves that Ragnar is named after.

No, he's not named after a Blackmaned wolf. His real surname is Thunderfist. He's just called Blackmane because he killed one with his bare hands in the wilds of Femris and dragged it home to add to his fashionable wolf apparel.

Uh, yeah, which is why he is named after the Blackmane Wolf (his appellation). Also, most Fenrisians don't have surnames. He belonged to the Thunderfist tribe.

Okay, I finally got around to finding some Fenrisian Wolves fluff for you:

Fenrisian Wolves

"The wolves of Fenris are amongst the most vicous predators in the known universe. They are massive creatures easily as large as a horse. Legends tell of creatures larger still, whose jaws are capable of crushing steel and whose teeth are as huge as tree trunks. These creatures roam the wastes of Fenris. They are numerous in the vast lands of Asaheim that lie around the foot of the Mountains of Fangard upon whose peaks stands the Space Wolves fortress of the Fang. The Wolves of Fenris are more intelligent by far than ordinary wolves. It is said that they are led by a great king of their kind, a wolf black as the night as big as a mountain who is called Kjarg, King of Wolfkind."

and

Grey Hunters

Usually by the time Blood Claws develop their first grey hairs the fury of the Blooding has receded, leaving them cunning and rational, as wily and deadly as wolves. They can control the urge to get straight to grips with the foe and are ready for the next stage in their initiation into the Chapter. They are sent out into the Hyperborean Wastes that lie to the west of the Fang to kill a Grey Wolf. The Grey Wolves do not grow as large as a true Fenrisian Wolf, but are nonetheless vicious predators, so a duel with one is far from one sided, even for a Space Marine. The Grey Hunter is expected to run the beast down and break its neck with his bare hands. He returns with the pelt as proof of his victory. Usually some part of the wolf skin is incorporated into his ceremonial dress or worn as a lucky charm.

Enjoy,

Valerian

Thank you for the fluff. I've never come across it before. Were did you find it?

Yeah and guys I did mention that I have already seen to thunderwolves. I was just asking about Fenerisian Wolf breeds in particular.

Anyway, Thankyou Valerian for the info on Grey Wolves. Thats the scheme for the second pack sorted.

You're welcome. The Fenrisian Wolves snippet is from the 2nd Edition Codex, while the Grey Hunters bit was from 3rd Edition Wolves of Fenris article from WD 246.
