Returning to the 41st Millenium

After a lot of time spent painting Pre-Heresy armies and spurred on by reading "The Purging of Kadillus" I have decided to start/redo my 40k Dark Angels and for the first time in a few years I'm actually painting Deathwing to go with them.

For the Army list I've pretty much decided to do the order of battle from the back of Purging of Kadillus and I mean everything except the second thunderhawk as I can't afford/don't want to build another one.

For the look of them I'm trying to go down the road of the 3rd ed. codex. Quite dark and with the black weapon casings instead of red.

As a test I've started having a go at a test marine and and test terminator shown below. Thought, comments, criticisms etc. are appreciated

These two guys are still a bit WIP and I'm still undecided on how to base them whether to go with urban bases or desert/wasteland any input on this is appreciated

Also sorry for the poor pics, I'm having to use an old camera

Nice work - they look nice and crisp... Looking forward to seeing more. I always think that with bases the best thing is to think of a colour that will complement the figures and work with that. I currently use a dark red as I like how it works with the green, bone and Ravenwing-style black...

They look great - very clean! nice balanced bone and a good stone look to the crux. I've just started a batch myself an am debating how to paint the crux (dark gold vs. dark grey stone..) wouldnt mind hearing your recipes.

As for basing i'd say the desert gives you better contrast against the dark green and will give you more excuse to add some dusty weathering to them... i havent read the purging of kallidus but if that's you're theme i'd base it around the environment's in there.

Clean is exactly the right word, needs a real good look to see the highlighting on the bone for example so it's very subtle.

Good work indeed.

Just a minor comment, I somehow feel the terminator should have a red bit somewehere, maybe the bolter casing?

Could be just me off course so feel free to ignore it

Cheers for all the comments guys. As my DA transfer sheet from forge world turned up today I've been able to finally finish the deathwing terminator.

Et Voila!

I've decided to go with the kind of deserty type base as it fits in more with my other armies and as has been said provides a nice contrast to the dark paint scheme.

Next up are more Deathwing and the first of my Storm Ravens (I'm not being left out, plus my Thunderhawk needs escorts)

Yeah I think the FW one is slightly better but they may be due to the age of the actual sheet more than any thing.

I've just started using transfers on my minis because I've discovered Microset and Microsol and those products make using transfers easy and flawless
