Lamenters

Recommended Posts

Ok, so the Lamenters. I will try not to make this a full IA with battlecries, mottos and all the rest. In no particular order it will be general background and some reasonable assumptions that have led me to where I am.

Origins:

These are not as dark as the fluff monster would like to admit. There was an article in WD260 covering the cursed foundings. It was a report by an Inquisitor called Apollyon to Inquisitor Belial. Apollyon was leading a mechanicus expedition to a planet called Incunabla. It documents their discovery of a hidden lab where experiments were discovered that appeared to be Astartes grown in cloning vats. An autopsy revealed these to be superior to Astartes in many ways with all sorts of organs that are not usually found there.

An excerpt from the base commander when the lab was in use describes the creation of the new chapters and problems that arose. There is the mention of ‘two subjects going beserk and killing thirty others’, a clear reference to the Lamenters and black rage.

This entire project was run by an Inquisitor called Crescere who kept all information of the developments of the geneseed quiet, what he called project Homo Sapiens Novus.

So development of the geneseed was kept quiet but the founding was not. Given that the Blood Angels know of the Lamenters existence (if you read the Blood Angels Raphen Omnibus it is mentioned in there) it would be fair to assume that the Blood Angels donated the command cadre around which the new chapter is created. So master, chaplains, librarians, apothercaries etc. and all the other guys needed to build and train and equip a chapter. As such the Lamenters know all about the Blood Angels and their traditions.

Anyways, the team disappeared and there was no sign of anything when Grey Knights went to investigate. There was a big suggestion that it was Fabius Bile.

Organisation:

The chapter is described as being codex. Therefore it has 10 companies that we all know and love and no odd surprises alla dark angels.

All the Blood Angel weapons are available to them, like Baal preds. If you read Hammer and Bolter you will know they do have furioso pattern dreads.

Assuming the whole command cadre thing was correct then the chapter will have Sanguinary Guard and the Sanguinary Priesthood (called the Calix). So colour scheme will be codex except for the blood angel specific units where you follow their colour scheme. However I would like to think that some traditions were pinched so Honour Guard and Commanders get extra bling in the form of gold armour. That and I don’t want to re-paint my company commander.

Pre-Badab.

Not too much info on this, apparently they went crusading, disappeared, reappeared, did some more crusading and fought in the Serpentine Straights Was with the Astral Claws. They also got involved with the Corinth Crusade and fought in a Black Crusade getting mauled heavily. They rebuilt before being sent to the Maelstrom. For more stuff read IA9.

Badab War:

Nuff said on that really.

Post Badab i.e. Kraken

So the Lamenters were on their penitent crusade when the got nommed by the nids. Apparently there are 300 left. Given that only 300 ‘survived’ Badab after they disagreed with the Minotaurs. There were a few others elsewhere but give that at least 200 died a Malvolion (read old nid codex) and another 100 at Devlan (can’t remember where I read that) then the Lamenters came out the war not too badly. Anyways, they are STILL on their crusade, so if you were doing a force set in the now then I would not expect to see any scouts.

In answer to your questions:

The head comes from the Masters of the Chapter box set, should the head off the scout company captain.

Again , thanks for all the comments. Do let me know what your thoughts on the fluff are, are there any whopping boo boos and can you add more to it.

Cheers

Ok, so I picked this guy up on ebay for a quid! Laughably the postage was more.

gallery_60109_5815_62737.jpg

He is a part of my second assault termi conversion, basically I want the fist because it's right handed....there aren't many in the gw range.

So file off the chaos stuff from the fist, better to do it whilst still attached.

gallery_60109_5815_309521.jpg

The it's time for some chopping action. Shame really as it's not a bad paint job, oh well.

gallery_60109_5815_57839.jpg

Get all the bits together.

gallery_60109_5815_380387.jpg

A bit more chopping

gallery_60109_5815_103505.jpg

Then you can glue and blue tack to your hearts content. I may convert the leg so that he is standing over a marine's headless torso with lots of blood and spinal cord linking that to the head in hand.

gallery_60109_5815_163790.jpg

The next stage will be to green stuff the torso armour in same way as the last one.

gallery_60109_5815_227629.jpg

Watcha reckon.

ill await til its finished, but at the moment th only way you can legally feild them is as twin powerfist captains. i do think that termys should have their weapons on either arm though rather than always storm bolter in the right hand as that gives them a very slight weakness firewise in some situations. by the byare those termys gonna be gold or yellow? could be cool golden lamenters termys. sanguard style.

Some more WIP photos of the assault termie

Fill out the torso with GS, smooth it down and then leave it to cure.

gallery_60109_5815_66101.jpg

Then add the muscle detail on top

gallery_60109_5815_348311.jpg

It's a little rough but I will neaten it up.

Build a base for him to go on, this will be painted separately.

gallery_60109_5815_299754.jpg

This is what the overall pose will look like when finished.

gallery_60109_5815_332301.jpg

@Brother nathan - these will be counts as assault termies so will pretend they are lightning claws. The presence of the angelus bolters means that I can cheekily say they are normal termies if I want. Though I will paint them yellow not gold. Saving gthe gold for officers and Sang Guard when I get round to making them again.

Comments and criticism most welcome as always.

P.S. I have been doing some painting too so I will have some completed stuff to show off for once.

I like what you've done, although I would say work a little bit more on your checkers. I like to start with quartering the pads and then breaking them down more and more with a fine brush and then filling in blocks, essentially. Also, there has been a good deal more fluff added to the Lamenters in the wake of Forgeworld's release of the two Badab War volumes. Volume 9 has background information of the Lamenters as well as their disposition at the beginning of, during and the conclusion of the Badab War. It also has pictures depicting their color schemes for various units and an entry for their chapter master, Malakim Phoros.

Here's latest WIP photo, as you can see, still lots to paint. Am strongly resisting the urge to buy more to finish off the dev and assault units first but really want to get this lot painted before that happens. I really hope I can be strong enough.

gallery_60109_5815_167481.jpg

And I have to do bases for them all too.

@ exetus - Cheers, surprised about the chequered pads as I was rather pleased bu those :-( granted the termies are my first effort and don't look as good as the others. Might do a photoshoot so you can see the better ones. I posted a load of fluff in a earlier post on same page as this post. It's basically my thoughts on the Lamenters having read Imperial Armour 9 (IA9) white dwarf articles and stuff I remember but can't remember where it was from. Had decided to ignore their colour scheme in a few ways as by the time I had got IA9 it was too much effort to change what I had painted already.

Right so, been doing a little painting this week but not enough to show off just yet.

However, I have discovered a new and very quick way of stripping paint from minis.

Before:

gallery_60109_5815_41991.jpg

After:

gallery_60109_5815_253414.jpg

Also, I have finished templates for the armour of my stormraven/thunderhawk conversion type thingy

gallery_60109_5815_51406.jpg

And then this turned up in the post today:

gallery_60109_5815_160870.jpg

A3+ 1mm plasticard. I will be gluing that to the side of my flying brick as soon as it gets returned to me - my brother nicked it for a game of Apoc last weekend. However I have been promised the loan of a drop pod so I will turn that into templates so I can bash out 20 of those on the cheap. Not sure how long the drawings will take but I should have something drop pod-esque to show off week after next (Shogun 2 has been released so has first dibs on my life, that and rugby and the F1 soon)

Plasticard and templated with some glue and elbow grease go onto the mini hawk and look like this:

gallery_60109_5815_77656.jpg

It's really starting to come together now, I need to make a few adjustments, and fill in some spaces but otherwise it is nearly ready for painting :-)

I also got bored of painting so started to do some more converting. The idea is meant to be an assault squad especially equipped for void combat:

As always comments and criticism are welcome, I'm all grown up and promise I won't cry.

Good work, and if you are talking about stripping paint, dawn power disolver. Around me the only place that sells it is walmart, and they look at me kind of funny when I come in and buy it five bottles at a time, and only that. The plus side, it causes zero damage to the mini. You can use it to soften green stuff for removal as well. With pewter minis after 24 hours most of the paint comes off as you pull it out of the disolver, straight faucet takes most of the rest. A quick brush (5 to 10 seconds for the whole mini) and they look as good as new, primer and everything gone nothing left in the recesses even. Plastic it is not as effective in that sometimes a bit of the primer will stay behind in certain recesses (less then 10 to 15% of the smallest recesses) but all the paint will be gone. Unlike simple green it will not soften the plastic, and unlike oven cleaner you do not need gloves or ventillation. With all the stripping I have been doing I have been testing all kinds of ways to strip them, this is by far the best. Ohh, and you can keep reusing it for batch after batch without losing potency (I am at three with only adding enough new to top it off and it is still good to go.

I really like the yellow on your Lamenters, very different from mine but good looking nonetheless.

Glad you chose to put the chapter symbol on their right shoulder as well - and I really like the checkers, to be honest. They are positively different from mine, but none the worse for it.

I'm glad to see white helmets work good on yellow armour. Strengthens my resolve to do the same one my veterans when I finally finish my 2nd company.

So, a bit more work on the stormraven/thunderhawk scratchbuild this week. Most of the detailing has been done, just have to do the wings and I'm sorted, just waiting for some stormraven kit bits to turn up in the post for my engine and I can crack on with that. Next stage will be to fill in the gaps between the plasticard sections with fine surface filler. In the meantime I have done some more shots.

gallery_60109_5815_298979.jpg

It's all a bit rough, but I only built this thing to make sure it all goes together before I build a proper one, it's becoming a bit of a white elephant!

Comments and criticism welcome as always

@ vonny - cheers, yellow is built up as a series of glazes with the intention of avoiding sharp highlights, though I'm thinking I will end up doing it anyway as I'm still not totally happy with the contrast. The shoulder pads are me cheating really but I don't like what happens at the top if you paint the cheques first. I stick a white circle down first for the chapter badge and paint around it, saves a lot of time too :-)

Bit of converting this afternoon, picked up the AOBR termies for a tenner, so I continued making my assault termies that could be regular termies. Not really sure what they will be but I like putting them together.

I will file off the templars symbol

Groupshot:

gallery_60109_5815_171657.jpg

Still a fair amount of green stuffing needed to neaten them all up.

Also, some bits of stormraven for my scrathbuild hawk's engine, can you guess where the green thing on the right comes from?

Been fairly busy at work but made some progress recently, there are going to be a few photos I think:

Almost completed tac marine squad

gallery_60109_5815_263732.jpg

I was at Salute last weekend, got myself a few things:

gallery_60109_5815_639999.jpg

and this guy

gallery_60109_5815_325573.jpg

only cost me 10 quid so quite pleased with that. I did get the boarding marine too but I think you all have seen it by now.

I have also converted the first of my void combat specialist assault troops (head isn't right though):

gallery_60109_5815_455388.jpg

A company in progress shot, it's getting quite big now:

gallery_60109_5815_122365.jpg

And finally, they all need ride so I've been working on this too:

Cheers Vonny

Completed my drop pod this evening, it's currently sitting outside with spray paint all over it.

gallery_60109_5815_211512.jpg

Got a few more changes to make to the design but pretty good for a first effort.

Now on to the next scratchbuild project. Something for Apocalypse battles methinks.

Just a brief update, haven't done much recently. My company now has it's complement of assault squads...

gallery_60109_5815_340023.jpg

A tiny bit more glue is needed on this lot

gallery_60109_5815_154132.jpg

Next will be a lick of paint.

Still working on my apocalypse sized thingummy bob, nothing to show just yet as I have been drawing it in SolidWorks and trying to learn how to use it at the same time. Might just go back to Visio which is how I did the mini hawk and drop pod templates.

Comments are a pleasure, to read, as always.

I really like the yellow of these Lamenters. My favourite so far is the Terminator with two powerfists and a servo skull on his back? Id give him a cape and call him the Chapter Master if you havent already got ideas for that. Only thing is id add some penitant marks to some of the marines, not sure what they would look like but you seem to have a good imagination :tu: and some dead nids to some of the bases, i saw one base on this thread with a terminator standing on a metal deck plate that had a smoking hole in it, i thought it would be a good idea to have a genestealer or something coming out of the hole.

Also if you get a dread its got to be Chyron reunited with his bros, can do some cool deathwatch conversions to him then as well.
