Word Bearers

I moved to Germany recently and have decided to build another army while i am here. I just got started on these guys. There will be a good deal of the FW heresy era armor models in here as I intend to model some of the original Legionnaires into my army. So far i have a rhino, 4 Legionnaires, a half done raptor and some wound markers....enjoy. BTW these were taken with my phone....not the best but its all i have at the moment and keep in mind that these are very WIP

Looks like a solid start to an army worthy of righteous purging :D . The GS work adds a nice bit of flavor to the FW suit. I'm particularly curious to see what becomes of those Empire Flagellants in the background.

One burning question though, where'd that brazier on the back of the tank come from? (get it, 'burning' question? I slay me ;))

The braziers are form the corpse cart and the flagellents are to be "wound markers" for my sorceror. They represent imperial priests captured by my particular host, who then forces them to "Bear the Word" of chaos for them....hence the book, which will in this case be considered the Book of Lorgar

and finally, i added a bunch of scroll work to the rhino's top-decking as it seemed a bit lopsided

As a loyal devotee to the Word and the XVII with apparently too much time on his hands, I want so much to love these models... but there's something I can't seem to get past.

The Iron Armour. The bits themselves are great, but what's bugging me is that when the Word Bearers "went public" with their allegiance to Chaos and adopted the red/silver legion colours, they didn't just repaint, they got all new, lastest-mark kit. The emerging Dark Mechanicus managed to divert enough mk IV units from official production to equip Lorgar's entire Legion*, and made a gift of them to XVII as proof of their loyalty.

Since the Word Bearers couldn't exactly stroll around wearing evidence of mass insubordination, they had to keep the maximus suits hidden while they made pretense at loyalty. So they christened the new plate with red-and-silver in advance. That way, when Lorgar broadcast his grand speech condemning the Emperor and Imperium, and formally declared his allegiance to Chaos, every battle brother could immediately don the colours of the free Legion.

True to form, shedding the old Imperial uniform was presented as a symbolic act, and thus could only be carried out in a manner defined by dramatic ritualization and fanatical excess. The grey suits were gathered up and incinerated en mass before Legion congregations. Also, Lorgar being Lorgar, the idea of his warriors raising the colours of rebellion all across Imperial space became something of a fixation, and the associated theatrics were extreme. As I recall, preparations extended to ordering Word Bearers astartes to, essentially, disperse across colonized space and loiter in public places. The legionairres were also supposed to be out of public view during the broadcast itself, and reappear in public wearing the new colours immediately after it concluded. This was all to be time co-ordinated galaxy wide, maybe a 1 hour envelope, including in remote regions months from recieving the broadcast in question.

Bearers of the Word: it always matters, don't ask for reasons, ask for faith.

*(meanwhile the refits underway for those with first dibs had shipments delayed, shorted, skipped, erased from schedules... astartes commanders mailed in huffy complaints of intolerable service standards like old women with satellite tv... epic troll)

EDIT:

wow, I began this post intending to end it with something to the effect of "so you have a fluff tidbit about the ancient facility/conquered fortress/dead bodies it was recovered from, right?". Then I forgot to add that bit and came off sounding like way more of an :D than I usually do. Sorry bout that.
