A Word in Your Ear- question

So today a palyer at my local shop tries to use AWIYE in a new and interstingly cheesy way. Being the local rules answering guy I was asked to assist when a dispute broke out about it. Thinking about it now I just want to confirm my ruling on it.

Anyways this guy tries to use AWIYE first to split a unit in 2 directions breaking their coherency. This is not allowed as far as I know. The move has to be a legal move, and that isn't. Next he tries to split off an attached IC that deployed as part of the unit. This is the questionable part. Since the ic deployed attached to the unit we ruled that he couldn't split them and must move the whole squad.

Was this the right call or could the IC be split off of it and moved or vice versa?
