[EPIC] & [AERO] Airbase

Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this thread is allowed on these boards, but I reasoned that as it is for Imperial and Space Marine forces in Epic and Aeronautica Imperialis, then it has a place. This post is primarily about Aeronautica Imperialis, but as the power armoured forces don't have full squadrons or their own ground facilities, Astartes like me have to resort to the Imperial Navy and commandeer thier facilities. I do accept that if this post does not fit in the forum then it will be moved or deleted by the mods.

I've been planning an airbase for games of Aeronautica Imperialis, and at times Epic too, and also because it will be fun to model. I wanted to get some opinions on the layout of the airbase. Here's what I've proposed so far, using the models from Forgeworld. I'm unsure if it has enough anti-aircraft defences, and thought I could either put more in, or put in barracks and tanks sheds somewhere to have mobile anti-aircraft units instead.

On the plan:

Number 1 represents Imperial Heavy AA Guns

Number 2 represents the gun emplacement from the Imperial Airbase Accessories kit, with the two smaller torquoise hexagons next to the control tower being the bunker from the same kit.

I'm a fan of both games, and think the FW pieces look great, but pricy! If you have the cash, it would be a very good centrepiece.

Something about the landing pads always struck me as odd, though... They are both very small, which is fine for a VTOL craft - which could land anywhere really - but couldn't see a Maurauder bomber being able to land on one of them. They would need a landing strip rather than the landing pads FW show.

I'm not sure about the Navy fighters and their VTOL capability - I think I remember something in Double Eagle about them being able to do this, but I'm not certain. It might just have been the slingshot launchpads to get them off the ground...

Hey, if you can kitbash some landing strips rather than buy the pricy landing pads, it would leave more cash for buying those very nice AA gun defences instead! :)

I'll be interested to see how this progresses - good luck!

Aeronautica Imperialis is approved for discussion here along the same lines as Battlefleet Gothic.

You might consider checking out Imperial Armour Model Masterclass Volume I as one of the projects shown therein is an Imperial airbase table.

Looks pretty neat. I'd recommend another two '1s' - right above (and below) the small landing pads.

Yeah, I'd considered that too Octavulg, and it's something I might do. I have bought roughly half of the parts so far, and they are actually much bigger than I expected! They are huge! I'm considering making it modular now, so that I can rearrange it as I need to (and store it), although it doesn't really need to be modular for Aeronautica really, since the game occurs in the air above the base, and not on the ground really. However, I am drawing up plans to add landing strips, bunkers and barracks nearby too. If I'm not careful this will turn into something huge!
