I thought he had a spear?

He did own a spear, given to him by the emperor...he wasnt a fan of it. the spear was a creation of the ragnar series.

i do believe Russ, like most primarchs, had many weapons but did keep a "signature" weapon around, which for Russ was the frostblade Mjalinir (spelling is off) also given to him by the Emperor. it is the wicked long sword he is carrying in most of his appearance. so that and a pistol.

His fostsword (not the chainblade sort) is usually described as his main weapon. I believe it was a gift from the Allfather and there's a legend about it being able to sunder the mountains themselves. I think it's also sometimes described as being a fiery weapon, although I don't recall where I heard that so it may be apocryphal.

The spear is usually described as being used as a ranged weapon (as per the viking martial tradition of throwing spears) so think of it as a sort of heavy javelin that he could have used in lieu of a gun when he needed something really heavy.

He's also often depicted as having a bolt pistol, which was probably his more commonly used ranged weapon (unless the spear had a teleporter like Foehammer).

Thanks for all the help brothers.Ill go with the frostblade and bolt pistol then.Ive done some research but couldnt get the precise answer.

Well who knows, the spear might have been a symbol of loyalty. But who needs to take your anger out on a spear if you can take it out on orks? :D

According to that thread, and considering several people of different views calling it the same name, the frostblade was called Mjalnar and was the first one given to him by the Emperor as a gift.

^ I would love to know the original source for this bit of lore.

Also, for any that might not know, Thor's weapon was called Mjölnir, which makes for a distinct link to the naming scheme of Russ's Mjalnar. Also, as for it being a frost"blade" .. Mjölnir was most often depicted as a hammer, BUT was sometimes referred to as an axe or a club. As is prevalent in the 5E codex, frost axes DO in fact exist, and despite the most recent fanart of Russ sporting a sword, I think it's perfectly acceptable for the very first frost weapon bestowed to a Primarch of a viking-esque culture to be in axe form.

Thanks Mav! I didn't check the forum yesterday, so hadn't noticed the thread yet.

Anyway, here's what I've got:

Leman Russ was gifted a magnificent suit of armor thrice blessed by the Emperor, and his sword was replaced by the magnificent Frost Blade Mjalnar, forged from the teeth of the mighty Ice Kraken Gormenjarl. The blade was said to be able to split the mountains of Fenris in twain.

This occurred after Russ was reunited with the Allfather, and as he was to be given command of the VI Legion. Unfortunately, this quote came from some notes that I've got, but I don't have the original source for it (but will keep looking). All of the original information on Russ that I've got from Rogue Trader era stuff (WD 117, WD 156, etc.) doesn't specifically mention his weaponry in his fluff, however, the artwork always had him with a Frostblade in one hand, Bolt Pistol in a holster at his hip, and chains to the collars on his two wolf companions in his other hand. As far as I know, the Spear of Russ is a fabrication of the Black Library novels, and isn't actually mentioned anywhere in design studio fluff (e.g. codices or White Dwarf articles), but I could be wrong on that. Regardless, even in the BL novels, Russ purportedly never used the Spear, and much preferred to use Mjalnar.

Regards,

Valerian
