Logistics of chapter founding.

Im working on my magnum opus of a space marine chapter and Im trying to envision the logistics and steps involved.

-High lords of Terra decide its founding time, in a conversations something like:

Jack:"We want 40 new chapters. whats bad at the moment jim?"

Jim: Eye of terror needs another 5 chapters, 5 for chapters lost in the segmentum solar, inquisition wants more help in the obscura's and say another 30 we'll put out to the beaurcracy, see where's weak"

Jack:"Good work Jim"

So now the high lords have commissioned the chapter right? "Unnamed chapter X17" and the mechanicus looks in the gene seed fridge and says..... we got some imperial fists, some spicy flesh tearer's thats still good, oh and theres ultramarines in the freezer, how many we cooking for? 40? yikes. okay, lets start defrosting the ultramarine...

Presumably at this point they start to stash the equipment required for 1000 new men... or do they start with only a few hundred? Also: how do they obtain things like dreadnoughts and artifact, I cant imagine any chapter 'donating' a dread...? finaly how are themes and tactics decided?

"Captain Rich, you did really well fighting against the greenish tide of grots and snots from planet zard, take ten of your best mates and start training up a new chapter, the mechanicum is calling the the Amazing Marines at the moment ...see if you can pursaide them to change that. Oh and you can call yourself a grand master now, kay?"

You would think that the more revered pieces of equipment wouldn't be given to new chapters, so items such as Land Raiders and Dreadnought chassises are most likely provided new from the Mechanicus. Of course, there could be dreadnoughts as part of the founding cadre for the new chapter.

Nobody knows how chapters are really founded, that's the problem. There's assumptions but no concrete, canonical evidence. We don't know if they start out with 400 or so and build up, or if they aren't released into the wild galaxy till they're a 1000 strong. Basically, you should use whatever's good for your story :HQ:

Under the community accepted but canonically unconfirmed theory of the founding cadre, tactics and themes would depend on the background of the founding cadre and the chapter's first Chapter Master. Many think that the founding cadre system is also a convenient way for Chapter Masters to get rid of more maverick Captains. Then the first hundred years of warfare would help set their preferred type of warfare. Any themes or influences could also originate from a homeworld if the chapter takes one.

Good luck!

we definitely know how many marines they start with. The original Rick Priestly creation of a space marine article that listed all the organs also described the mechanicus growing one thousand sets of organs in the lab from a single progenoids' worth of geneseed before they create even one marine. Since 2e codex Ultramarines describes the different chapters' geneseeds being isolated from each other to prevent cross contamination, they probably want the first 1000 to have uniform geneseed. The same concept also leads me to believe that any cadre or loaner-chapter master do not become real members of the chapter, since even if they have the same primarch, the mechanicus does not consider the cadres' and the new chapters geneseeds to be entirely the same.

A good point, VSM, but possibly incorrect. I used to think this meant that a Chapter started with 1,000 Marines too, but someone pointed out to me that it doesn't say that all of them were necessarily implanted before the Chapter gets going. It's possible that they might not have sufficient recruits/start with a lower number to make training easier/starting with a geneseed reserve/waiting until they have Homeworld recruits to implant into. Just something to consider.
