Ace Debonair
Just thought I'd ask here if anyone would have any objections to me switching my Loyalist Chapter to different one. I've hit such a wall with the Exculpators that I have lost all forward momentum entirely. Instead I'm thinking of doing one of their successors (sorta) which, although along vaguely similar lines, was largely inspired by playing DoWII. I even have a chapter lost in the Warp and formi\ng from a lost company. Well, sorta. I want to see if I can pull it off (not liekly). Anyway, unless anyone has objections, I'd like to make the switch to the (working name) Astral Wolves. Doesn't bother me that much, not least because it gives me precedence for switching chapters later on if I really have to. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/224164-iron-gauntlet-2011-march-challenge/page/2/#findComment-2688347 Share on other sites

Brother Argent
Okay so here is the start of my March Entries. Although I was gonna do all three parts of the Challenge for Four people I'll only do two, as I cant get the models as I dont have all the parts I need. ;) Anyway, here is the first Loyalist Captain Lucan Alerro of the Astral Wolves 3rd Company: Lucan Alerro is the youngest and most in-experienced of the Captains of the Astral Wolves yet it is his youth, mixed with his stubborn and, at times, almost bull headed nature that has marked and shaped his short but heroic career within the Chapter. The people of such worlds as Adytum and Jias VI speak of the young Captain with respect, earned through bloody actions and sheer determination. Born on the Fortress World of Rutilus Moenia Lucan was drafted to the military, like every second child on the planet. Trained from the age of six to be a soldier it was his actions on the training field that saw him, like many others from his homeworld, be selected to undergo the tests to become a Space Marine. Taken back to the Astral Wolves homeworld he began to process that would turn his into something more then a mere human. Lucan’s stubborn nature soon became apparent when, as he performed in the various training exercises that would see him become a scout he would often continue to strive to achieve the goals set before him, even when all his fellow recruits had given up, or when he should have been beaten. This head strong nature and sheer unbreakable determination saw him quickly rise to his successful induction into the Tenth Company and from there to the position of Battle Brother in the Third Company. It also created conflict with some of the more out spoken leaders of the Chapter when the young initiate refused to back down in any situation. Even if the situation called for a tactical retreat or to fall back to a safer more suitable position Lucan refused to give ground. This same stubbornness was expressed when he was chastised for his actions, refusing to back down. It was this single minded stubbornness that eventually earned his the position of Sergeant and amongst his brothers his squad soon became known as the Rock of the Third, an immovable force, holding ground till there were none left standing. It was at this time that he was taken under the wing of the Companies Chaplain, Arko Kanturas. Arko worked to temper the young sergeant’s stubbornness into a more suitable form. Under Arko’s tutelage Lucan was made to see that sometimes his unwillingness to retreat could well loose the battles for his Chapter as well as the lives of his battle brothers. Slowly, with all his famous stubbornness, Lucan began to see the wisdom in the aged Chaplains words. Although still reluctant to ever give ground or back down he now saw the wisdom in occasionally falling back. As a Sergeant Lucan was involved in the Mankara Crusade where the Chapter suffered heavy losses, in particular the 3rd and 7th Companies. With the death of several of the Companies Command Staff Lucan was offered the role of Company Standard Bearer, the youngest marine to be offered the position in the Astral Wolves history. This was, in most part, due to Lucan’s steadfast and implacable nature, as well as Arko’s advice. Lucan proudly took on the honour, and under his dutiful tutelage the Company Standard never once dipped, let alone fell. Even during the siege of the Hive City Kolus Prime, when Lucan was cut off from the rest of his squad in the narrow Hive streets. Even as traitor artillery fell around him and cultists assaulted him in a great horde Lucan kept the standard high till reinforcements could come to his aid. The reinforcements arrived after three hours of Lucan being cut off to find the marine battered and bloody, but still standing atop a mountain of heretic corpses. For his actions during the siege he was presented with the Crux Terminatus and offered a position within the hallowed First Company. Much to everyone’s’ surprise he turned the position down, stating that his place was with the Third Company. Lucan continued in his tenure as Company Standard Bearer until the fateful day when, during a minor skirmish with a band of piratical renegades, the Captain of the 3rd fell after the renegades launched a surprise boarding action. Under Lucan’s command the remaining Astral Wolves crushed the traitors on board their ship before destroying the pirates ship in orbit. Placed under Lucan’s temporary command by Chaplain Arko till the conclusion of the Campaign the 3rd Company returned victorious at the end of the war. After receiving several glowing reports from the Imperial commanders whom worked alongside Lucan Chapter Master Thonas declared that Lucan would lead the 3rd as its Captain. Despite uproar from many of the more senior members of the Chapter Lucan was appointed Captain, a rare honour for one so young. From that day Captain Lucan has led his 3rd Company in several important Campaigns, from the defense of Adytum to the Cleansing of the Sepulcher of Ilum. During these campaigns he has proven himself time and time again to be worthy of the trust placed in him. Still known as the Rock of the Third Lucan leads from, the front, his ancient relic lightening claws slicing through any whom are foolish enough to stand before him. The 3rd are almost fanatically devoted to the young Captain, knowing that he may lead them into hell, but he has always led them out again. Despite his overwhelming success Lucan recently faced censor from both his own Chapter as well as the Ordo Xenos after, during the defense of the Death World Ferrom that he, not only knowingly accepted the aid of the perfidious Xenos known as the ELdar. But he also welcomed them aboard his ship and then deposited them on the nearest planet connected to their ‘Webway’ during the planets subsequent destruction. Although stating that he felt honour bound to assist those whom had saved his life Lucan was temporarily removed from command and has since faced extensive scrutiny from the Ordo Xenos. Lucan regained the support of his Chapter after his actions turning aside the piratical raid of another elder force that struck at the Chapter’s Homerworld. Since then Lucan has regained much of his lost honour, although rumours persist about his continued contact with the Eldar, in particular a single individual whom is believed to be one of the races so called ‘Farseers’. Lord Tybault
Here is my entry for Tiras, First Captain of the Marines Exemplar: This is the tale of the honored First Captain Tiras, slayer of the demon prince Skargak, known as ‘Demonbane’ to enemies and friends alike. Before Tiras was bestowed the honor of becoming a First Company Veteran he served with distinction in a 5th Company assault squad, earning his promotion to sergeant during the Siege of Parellia V, which was then plagued by a Chaos incursion. It was there that he first came upon the fell being which was to become his most hated enemy – the demon prince Skargak, leading a warband of the Emperor’s Children in support of the defected PDF forces and countless cults that had brought about an uprising and subsequnetly, the siege. This demon prince slew many good men that fateful day; and when finally confronted by Tiras’ squad leader, Sergeant Gernon, Skargak slew the sergeant as well, who was not able to best the demon prince in combat. With his dying breath he gave his sword, an ancient chapter relic handed down from one sergeant to another, to Tiras, which in turn promised to hunt the fiend down and end his reign of terror. Alas, the demon fled the field of battle, the siege nearing its end when the combined might of the Marines Exemplar and a dozen Imperial Guard regiments bore down upon the heretics of Parellia. After Skargak had vanished, Tiras swore an oath to hunt the demon prince to the end of the galaxy and beyond if need be to avenge the death of his sergeant and his battle brothers. He continued to serve with 5th Company, from then on squad sergeant of the 8th Assault Squad. He fought the archenemy countless times on dozens of worlds and in space, but it was not until the chapter boarded a space hulk known by the name Blade of Despair that his nemesis chose to show himself again. This mission also earned him the hallowed Crux Terminatus and elevation to First Company Veteran. 5th Company was tasked with a sweep of the bow section of the space hulk while 3rd Company with a detachment of First Company set out for the stern where the Techmarines ha detected energy signatures and believed the main resistance to be, if there was any resistance at all. Preliminary swipes had shown the vessel to be empty and abandoned, although the energy signature was deemed worthy of inspection. Chapter Master Absolon not wanting to take any unecessary risks nontheless deployed two full companies plus a few squads of First Company armored with venerated Terminator armor to accompany the already impressive force. This caution would, in hindsight, save many lives. The archenemy are known to be deceitful and tricky above everything else, and although it’s almost heretical to admit this, one may under no circumstances underestimate them. Chapter Master Absolon sureley never did, but in the end it was the martial prowess and the faith of the battle brothers of the boarding force. As soon as the boarding force entered the space hulk, vox contact between the two parts was lost and couldn’t be reestablished until the boarding action was done and the ploy of the enemy averted. Unbeknownst to even Absolon, the demon prince Skargak had planned to infiltrate Imperial space with a sizeable force Emperor’s Children unde his command and used a space hulk for this undertaking. Masking the lifesigns of himself and his warband and fooling the Exemplars’ systems with false energy readings, he only revealed himself when both groups had deeply penetrated into the space hulk and had seperated into smaller detachments to cover more ground. By fate, though, the demon prince judged 5th Company to be the weaker force and attacked them first. As soon as the enemy revealed itself, countless fights broke out all over the vessel, with casualties quickly rising on both sides. Tiras and his squad were in the heaviest fighting very soon, finally facing off against multiple squads of Emperor’s Children lead by a Noise Champion with the name of Lazaar. Having lost half of his squad hechallenged the Chaos champion and bested him in single combat even after being heavily injured, having fought his way through Lazaar’s personal bodyguard. After this he helped rally the dispersed squads of 5th Company and fought his way through towards the second battlegroup which had become bogged down and was beleaguered by a force of Emperor’s Childrens twice their strength. With 5th Company coimng to aid their brothers, the demon prince yet again decided to flee, but not before he had personally shown himself and slain one of the chapter’s heroes, Veteran Sergeant Dreux, who lead one of the Terminator squads onto the space hulk. Tiras only catche da glimpse of the demon prince fleeing the space hulk, his plans being shattered yet another time by the Marines Exemplar. It was only then that tiras allowed himself to collapse from blood loss and exhaustion. More dead than alive, Tiras was carried back to the Exemplar’s battlebarge and for mayn weeks, his fate hung in the balance. Finally he recovered and for his accomplishments during the raid he was awarded the Crux Terminatus and granted a place within First Company by Chapter Master Absolon himself. Tiras contnued to fight and hunt the enemy wherever they showed their face for many decades, rising through the ranks and finally being promoted to the Veteran Sergeant leading First Squad into battle after having faithfully ad honorably served the chapter for over 100 years. It was in Tiras’ 102nd year of service when he met his nemesis yet again; this time, though, would be the last they crossed paths. The Marines Exemplar had deployed along with other Praeses Chapters to stem a massive Chaos incursion headed for the worlds of the Helican Subsector and a force of Emperor’s Children speaheaded the assault. They made planetfall on a small, unkown shrine world with the name of Pristina, apparently to conduct debased rituals for their so-called god. Absolon taking no chances this time deployed the entire First Company along with three battle companies and one reserve company to defeat the enemy with one decisive strike. Scout squads had been deployed ina dvance as vangaurd of the strike force and soon reported the sighting of the demon prince Skargak near a shrine which housed the remains of an Imperial saint. The appearacne of lesser demons had also been reported. Upon hearing this, Tiras asked to be allowed to confront the demon prince that had slain his squad sergeant so many decades ago and Absolon granted him the wish, nontheless sending one half of First Company with him to make sure it was not trap; First Captain Falkon lead the detachment. What Absolon had suspected proved to be the case: As soon as the small force arrived at the shrine, dozens of Emperor’s Children suddenly appeared from carefully concealed positions and opened fire on the Exemplars, trying to trap them in a crossfire killing zone. Captain Falkon immediately ordered his men to charge the enemy positions and what had been planned to be a trap for the Exemplars soon turned into slaughter for the Emperor’S Children. As well as they fought, though, brother after brother went down due to the sheer volume of firepower and numbers, until only the First Captain, Tiras and a dozen Exemplars were still on their feet. That was the moment Skargak chose to appear; before he attacked, he mocked the Exemplars first, showing them the skull of the exhumed saint telling them what he planned to do. When Falkon challenged the fiend, a host of lesser demons appeared as well, throwing themselves savagely at the remaining Exemplars and yet another slaughter ensued. In the end Gernon went down before Skragk, his storm shield being torn in two by the demon prince’s vile posessed wepaon; and when Tiras raced up to him to avert the fina strike it early spelled the end of him as well: his ancient power sword that Sergeant Gernon had handed him, brought up into a guard position to avert the deadly strike of Skargak’s demon sword, was shattered as was his right pauldron, Tiras’ ancient and sanctified Terminator armor no match for the demon prince’s weapon. His force sword broken and his right arm almost torn off an useless, Tiras grabbed Falkon’s thunder hammer with his left and nontheless faced off against his nemesis. While his brothers fought and died around him, Tiras defended the fallen body of his captain, trading blow upon blow with his opponent and finally, after his armor was almost torn to pieces by mutltiple hits, killed the demon prince Skargak with one mighty blow to the head, giving the last of his strength. Even before the rest of the Emperor’s Children were driven off, Tiras collapsed over the body of his fallen captain having claimed victory. And thus it came to be that Tiras, formerly Sergeant of First Squad, First Company, was elevated to the position of First Captain. - Liber Honoria of the Marines Exemplar, Heroes of the Chapter Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/224164-iron-gauntlet-2011-march-challenge/page/2/#findComment-2706491 Share on other sites
Ace Debonair
Hmm. I'd better get my writing up to speed. What with introducing a bunch of new stuff to the Stonebound, the 600-word thing I already had no longer describes the same Chapter accurately. Still, I've got all day tomorrow. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/224164-iron-gauntlet-2011-march-challenge/page/2/#findComment-2706960 Share on other sites
Ace Debonair
Don't mind the double-posting - it's relevant this time! :) Still, I've got all day tomorrow. I don't know how long this stuff will be relevant for, since It's written halfway through changing the Stonebound's history up dramatically. But what the heck, here's the story of Garz Boneshield, First Captain of the Stonebound. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The saga of Captain Garz Boneshield of the Stonebound is a long, complex tale. Born, as are all Stonebound, on Kagara, even Garz remembers little of his pre-Astartes life, save for the biting cold of the winters, and blurred, vague memories of the journeys to and from the underground with the change of seasons. Even as a recruit, Garz excelled, passing every test put in front of him with dilligence, skill, and composure. His rise through the ranks was punctuated by equal parts glory and suffering. He was there when the Sixth Company slew Warboss Armsnappa on Syphos II, and fought in the battle of Verdus, where he lost an arm to the sword of a Traitor. He was there when Third Company avenged their loss against the Vel-Verro Craftworld, and was part of the only surviving squad to set foot on the space hulk Warpfang. When Captain Brakenshield volunteered him to join the Redshields, the ancient and honoured First Company of the Stonebound, Garz was stunned. He had never dreamed of accomplishing such an honour, thinking only of serving the Imperium. Later, Garz Boneshield would become Captain of the Fourth Company for a short time - all Captains of the Stonebound must be promoted from the Redshields, and Garz's service record in that hallowed company had been exemplary. He was removed from the office after suffering a near-fatal injury at the hands of Riftmark Kaliburn of the Rift Lords traitor warband. To this day, Boneshield's hatred of the Rift Lords is unabated, and a popular rumor within the Chapter's initiates is that he has had his own, personal grudge-stone crafted by the Chapter's Sages, as a constant reminder that his honour remains tarnished. Garz rejoined the First Company on his return to active duty, another of the Redshields taking his place as Fourth Captain. As per the duty of the Redshields, squads of veterans would be assigned to different companies, lending their experience and resolve to their allies. So it was that Garz and his squad fought with the Second Company in the battle of Morga, where the Imperial Guard turned and fled the field, leaving the Stonebound surrounded and alone, fighting for two whole weeks without cease against a vast horde of Orks. Alongside the Sixth Company, where Garz had once been a freshly promoted Battle-Brother, Veteran Sergeant Boneshield led his men into battle against the Eldar, alongside the Twilight Talons. Halfway through the combat, the Talons disappeared, silencing all communications and pulling out their troops without a word to the Stonebound. Only three squads, including Garz's, survived the battle. Boneshield's promotion to Captain of the First Company should have been a moment of triumph, of glory. Instead, he was besieged by doubt. Now, with the lives of his brother Redshields in his hands, he became increasingly paranoid around 'outsiders' - anyone not of the Stonebound would be subject to Garz's scrutiny. Captain Boneshield's lack of trust concerning the wider Imperium spread through the Chapter somewhat, other Captains making sure to keep one eye on their allies at all times. This approach almost sparked a conflict when the Inquisition came calling. Inquisitor Jadine Solar had been sent to investigate the Stonebound's seeming reluctance to fight alongside other Imperial forces. She found herself confronted by an irate Captain Boneshield, who told her in no uncertain terms to direct her investigations into the cowardice rife in the rest of the Imperium. Inquisitor Solar, to her credit, kept her temper in check, and tolerated the rude, overly defensive behaviour of Captain Boneshield. Her reports on the chapter were kept professional and objective, although she did note the increasingly insular nature spreading through Chapter, and assigned the Stonebound's battle companies a penitent crusade 'for their own good, lest they stray from their duties'. Boneshield, naturally, saw this as further evidence that non-Kagarans could not be trusted. Why punish the Stonebound, after all the fights they had won in the Imperium's name? Captain Boneshield fought in the Chapter's penitent crusade, always leading from the front whenever conflict would be found. This crusade encountered several threats, although by far the most persistent foe was the Ork warboss Tanksplitta and his horde. Battles with this vast greenskin army took up the majority of the crusade, which fittingly ended with the wrecking of Tanksplitta's fleet above the world of Arstos. When the battle companies of the Stonebound returned home, they found that their reputation had been further damaged by their absence from the sector - various xeno forces had led attacks on worlds under Stonebound protection. The Reserve Companies had been stretched thinly trying to repel the invading forces, taking more losses on every world they strove to protect. With all these battles being waged close to home, the Chapter had been unable to help other Imperial systems, calling on the Stonebound for aid. The Battle Companies returned to their defensive duties with a will, but were too late to save some battlefields from falling to invading enemies, or to prevent some Imperial Guard leader from sourly reporting to Inquisitors a 'lack of haste' in the Stonebound's endeavours. Over time, Captain Boneshield's attitude has become more and more spiteful and resentful of outsiders, and is particularly vociferous about his dislike of Inquisitors. The two Chapter Masters that he has served under are careful to assign him duties that will keep him from crossing paths with the Inquisition, on the not-unfounded belief that Garz could only ever make any situation vis-a-vis said Inquisitors exponentially worse. In spite of his issues with outsiders, though, Captain Garz Boneshield is an exemplary Stonebound - tough, ferocious, and loyal to his brothers. He has a wealth of hard-earned experience in both tactical and strategic planning, and fights with the strength and skill common to Space Marine Captains. The few remaining Imperial forces that the Stonebound count amongst their friends are almost always reassured by his presence on a battlefield - it speaks volumes for the strength of these alliances that Garz will willingly take part in these battles. To this day, Garz Boneshield continues to serve the Imperium as First Captain of the Stonebound. Whether or not he will become Chapter Master or exert any further influence on the Stonebound, and their outlook, is unknown. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Now I'm going to make like a dreadnought after a battle and get some rest - writing that out has exhausted my brain totally, it seems. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/224164-iron-gauntlet-2011-march-challenge/page/2/#findComment-2707662 Share on other sites
Guest Mordray
Jahkob Drakiel, Guide of the 1st Battalion. Chosen of Clau Jahkob is an abnormality within the Void Reavers. The current practices of the Void Reavers dictate that the chapter recruits from a specially crafted, and strictly maintained, clan of those who are genetically compatible. Jahkob should have been inducted into this clan upon his acceptance into the chapter where he would add his genetic potential to the gene pool. Instead the child was granted the rare gift of a Void Reaver's Heart Seed. Normally only taken upon death the heart seed is a marines last gift to his chapter. However, ancient custom dictates that should a marine choose to his heart seed is his to give to another. Thus inducting them into the chapter, only age and genetic incompatibility can prevent this honor from occuring. In practice none outside of the clan had been inducted in this way since the clan's founding several thousand years prior. Jahkob's home world was once a prime recruiting ground for the chapter in it's youth before it's gene-seed began to fail. However, though a thousand years had past a small order remained that believed in the legends of the warriors from the stars who would chose the greatest from the youths of the clans. Having been trained since he could walk to compete young Jahkob was the only one of his village to escape the surprise assault of unnatural beasts that hungered for the blood, flesh and pain of humanity. Some born to such delusions will point out that the likely hood of a Void Reaver patrol ship in system at the time that Jahkob activated the signal to summon the chapter to witness the tournament are too small and thus it was the will of the god-Emperor that such had happened. They would be wrong. The date of the event had been intended to coincide with patrol patterns so as to not waste resources. In short nothing was wasted and though the world had been abandoned as a recruiting world it was still a junction in a complex web of patrol routes. A Warrior fire-team arrived on the planet to see Jahkob finish off a creature that in death liquified and vaporized leaving nothing to be analyzed. After securing the boy, who was nearly dead, the twenty five marines of the patrol ship scoured the planet for clues what they found was a planet wide force of beasts that could match a marine in physical combat. However it was the loss of all human life upon the planet that was most distressing. The creatures had succeeded in killing off all humans on the planet. While the chapter called upon their allies to try and determine what happened young Jahkob was tested for integration into the chapter clan. However, when Chapter Master Damon Clau spoke with the boy to learn from his first hand account of the events leading up to the massacre. As a result of this interview Damon was made aware of Jahkob's history and his training for the chance to prove himself worthy of joining the chapter and becoming a warrior of the void. Damon ordered that Jahkob bypass the clan and be prepared for implantation. However, the chapter council, as is their right, objected to this course of action as it violated precedent. Damon as he is want to do was quick to point out that he was himself a product of the old ways. The council in their stubbornness tried to claim he was an exception as he was augmented before the clan was founded. It is said that in his frustration that Damon took his combat blade and sliced open his own chest ordering the attending Chief Gene-Smith to extract his Heart Seed as he would be giving his gene-seed to Jahkob that the boy may be honored properly. The Chief Gene-Smith Gethic is well documented as expressing his concern over using the Chapter Master's gene-seed and offered to personally seek out the best examples of the existing zygotes and use those on the boy. Though Damon made certain that Gene-Smith Gethic used his gene-seed he was distant with the boy showing no further interest in him. As Gene-Smith Gethic would learn Jahkob was a rare individual who took the serum process with ease and developed considerably in the year it took for his body to be prepared for the gene-seed. Gethic is well noted for his belief that the use of the Serum process upon Jahkob was virtually redundent as his body was already highly compatible and Damon's gene-seed was the purest example he had ever seen, matching or exceeding all baseline marks. In keeping with the trend Jahkob adapted well to the gene-seed and by his eighteenth year was fully developed and ready for full training. Jahkob though given the best of beginnings would not be well accepted into the chapter as he was not of the clan and thus was seen by some as impure while others saw his being gifted with the Chapter Master's Heart Seed as an unfair favoritism. In the eye's of some Jahkob was being given an unfair advantage. Jahkob for his part seemed oblivious to his fellows dislike of him. The Overseers suspect it was because of his childhood training and the isolation such training brought with it. In short his experience was nothing new. All Void Reavers upon gaining their final implants must undergo seven years of unending battle upon a hell world. During this time the Overseers pick out and give further specialized training to those who display the needed skills for each aspect of the Void Reaver warmachine. Jahkob with only three years in was noted for his aggression and skill with both blade and gun. Given Warrior training equipment he excelled. By the end of his seven years he had drawn the attention of Magi Elrik and Guide Nethic who saw within the young Warrior aspects of greatness as he was able to lead his fire-team into battles and change their outcome by always being where he needed to be when he needed to be. Magi Elrik suspected an aspect of the warp was present within the young warrior while Guide Nethic suspected it was his flesh and blood mind not his warp essence that was the key to his successes. Time would show both to be correct. When Guide Nethic was granted command of the 12th Battalion only a month after Jahkob completed his seven years he recruited the youth and Magi Elrik to take on an ork waaagh! ((Interesting... seems I have hit the required number of words but not as a finished work... more to come.)) Brother Argent
Just a heads up guys. I have hit a massive computer problem at the moment. Meaning I cant really get here to close/finish/award siggies etc for the March Challenge, or announce the April one. Hopefully I can get the beast fixed, if I appropriately placate the machine spirit. In the meantime I can just say keep posting any March entries and I'll leave the Challenge open for a few more days, or however long it takes me to get this damned computer working. (Note this isn't from the not working computer as that would work. This is from a more... temporary solution...)
