My DW army, Angels of Vindication

Hey all, I have been working on this Death Wing army as a side project for a few years now. Finally, I have a table worthy force of about 2000 points.

I have to say that to this point I have had a ball, modeling and painting this army.

You may notice that while the paint scheme is very similar across the army, there are some divergences. I have basically used the army as a "test bed" trying out some different painting techniques as I painted the army, and even tried a little free hand.

First up we have Captain Vindicis (Belial) Master of the First Company of the Angels of Vindication

This was the third attempt at doing a Captain model that I was happy with, I think I finally got it right...

Here is what was my second attempt

He is not quite finished yet, I used this model to test out the "bone" armor of the more traditional Deathwing forces. I still use him on occasion when I want to arm him with Lightning Claws, but the first model shown is now my main Captain.

Next up we have my Int. Chappy

I know, I know he has Dark Angels Green armor. I painted him with Black highlighted with grays originally, but he just didn't look right next to the rest of my force. So I repainted his armor to match the rest of the army. I figured that the dark green was close enough to black to get away with it.

Well that is it for HQ choices. Of course all comments are welcome.

Next I'll post the Troops of the army...

Thanks for the comments guys!

Next up we have the Troops. This first squad is simply an AoBR Terminator squad with some extra bits added to the Sgt. and the Heavy Weapon trooper.

I painted this squad to test some speed painting techniques and assembled, primed and painted this squad all in one afternoon.

Next up we have my Command squad.

The next two squads are the ones that started it all for me, they are heavily converted and I really attempted to capture a "Warrior Monk" kind of a look with them. I have posted these before, but I have since re-based them. The original basing was "ship flooring" for Space Hulk battles. But I have now switched to a more traditional basing, mainly because I wanted to add Land Raiders to the army, and it just didn't look right with the old bases.

And finally we have my armor. My 2 Dreadnoughts and 2 Land Raiders round out this army, I experimented with a little free hand on my Two Land Raiders, "Lion's Wrath" and Angel's Fury"

You can see on this last Dread that I tested out a "split" color scheme.

In the works I have another heavily converted squad again using the Templar Robes, and using the "Lion" helmet of the Empire General, at first I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not. But I am quite happy with the result thus far. I'll try and get some WIP pictures up soon of them. Then it will be a third Land Raider, I'm just not sure if it should be a standard pattern or a Crusader. Those two units will take the army to about 2500 points.

Thanks for looking and of course all comments are welcome!

Your army is well painted for a quickpaint style and I specifically like the faces on someguys that have a realy gritty grim look.

Closer looks show your highlight to be somewhat thick, but I guess that is part of the style a bit as well.

It looks and works like stage make up on the theater. Up close its really overdone and thick, but at table top distance they have a lifelike and obvious expression, which really works for your army.

And a small personal preference, I would suggest painting a bit more on your banner :P it needs more then just the sword to be truly impressive.

Holy Cow littlebitz -- I'm blown away by these additions. The Dreads and Raiders are of excellent character -- but I would agree that the highlighting gradations look too 'blocky' on these larger surface areas and don't work nearly as well as on the smaller infantry models. That is an issue of presentation and takes nothing away from the brilliant characterisation you've modelled in ;).

The only thing I can point my finger at as a 'don't like' is the Corvus helm on the standard bearer.

Incidentally I like the 'minimal' design on your banners – the over the top design of official GW banners doesn't sit well with me. I prefer the simpler more impactful battlefield style of simple banners over their parade ground bigger brothers.

I'd be proud to own this lot. What more can I say?

Cheers

I

Thanks Isiah!

I modified and put those helms on most of the command squad, in an attempt to make that unit look more "Knightly" I agree that it didn't quite work.

I am thinking I may swap them out for some Grey Knight helms, and see if I like that better.

I'm still working on a paint technique that I actually like with the larger models. The highlighting style I use seems to work better with the Grays that I use with the Space Wolves than it does with these darker shades of Green. I'm not completely unhappy with the army so far, but I'm still working on it.

Of course its not as harsh when you see it in person. when its photographed and all up close and personal, it seems much more prominent.

Krewl hit the nail on the head, I paint in a "stage make-up" style designed for the table top. Its very exaggerated to make the models "pop" when you see them on the table.

Those are some very cool models, littlebitz. Excellent use of the Terminator Librarian for the MotDW model, he looks great. I also like all the tabards on the Terminators and you did a good job with the greenstuff to cover the seams. I like the simple standards, hazard stripes and the freehand on the Land Raiders, but why does the Ven. Dread have while only on the shoulder and one side of the body while the hand doesn't have any white at all, while the regular Dread only has white "finger tips"?

Overall, very cool models, and I think the highlights are cool and very striking, and probably make your stuff look great on the tabletop.

Thanks Bryan! as for why I painted what, why and where? I really don't have a good answer for you except that either 1. I thought it looked cool at the time, or 2. I was running short on time and took a short cut to get the model done in time for a tournament or other event.

Oh, and a Thanks to you Ellis! most of the banners are from the Warhammer Fantasy line. The Company Banner is from a Chaos kit (Marauders I think) and the back banners are from the Flagellants kit (lots of good bits in there)

I have another squad in the works with some more controversial conversions. I think some of you will like them, and others of you will probably hate it. I'll post some pictures when they are ready.

Wow! awesome job very grimdark and gothic, i particularly like the standard bearer - dont know how i missed these guys earlier! cool conversions all round and you've really achieved the 'warrior monk' feel.

Paintwise you've done a good job and its really consistant throughout the army, my only suggestion would be to use an ink on the tabards to tie the extreme contrasts together and appear smoother maybe gryphonne sepia, you could do the same on the armour with dark green ink. But seriously they look awesome and must look great together on the tabletop!

two-thumbs up

Very dark and green... exactly as I envisaged Dark Angels should be painted. You've captured the dark brooding image very well across the terminators, dreadnoughts and landraiders. I especially love the standard. Not the biggest fan of the command squad heads... nice conversions but the heads look a little small but that's just personal preference...

Very nice army indeed!

You, Sandalphon, ODM and Avoghai are scaring the hell out of me in terms of painting quality... ;)
