Devastator Squad Deployment

Im taking a 5man squad with x4 ML or x3 ML x1 LC and was wondering what the best way to deploy them would be?

1. Should you put them in a Razorback and boost them to the field also giving an extra heavy weapon with the razor?

2. Put em in a drop pod and drop them in the field? I run scout snipers with locator beacon for my VV.

Rest of my list is

Libby

Reclusiarch

Furioso

x2 Tact with Rhinos

x10 VV combat squads

Sniper Scouts with beacon

My club runs a lot of IG and Id like to add these dudes to my list.

I think that deploying them on the table with good lines of sight and cover would be the way to go. When I use devs I find that their biggest strength is the ability to put out fire from the start, and pod and such take this away.

Well, they really gain no advantage being IN a razorback. The RB has no fire points (a commonly overlooked point) so the guys inside can't fire. If you're looking for it as a way to move them into position... meh. It takes a turn of no firing to get them there.

Drop pod... same thing. They lose a turn of shooting. The best place for them is in cover, dug in deep so they have decent firing lanes. Remember, it not only helps that they lay down fire, but also that you make a "danger zone" on the battlefield that your opponent has to consider when moving his stuff around.

Generally, unless you sit them in a rhino for protection, they don't have any better option than sitting in cover with good fields of fire from the beginning.

I'm partial to the mobile bunker approach. Take a bare bones squad with 2 weapons and toss them in a rhino, fire from the hatch. I wouldn't go crazy with upgrades, maybe an extra stormbolter so the rhino can plink away at infantry if needed.

I would go with two rockets and two cannons plus a razorback with twin linked lascannon. Deploy them on the table outside the transport in the middle of your DZ. Basically you've got two twin linked lascannons (signum), one lascannon and two rockets. That's pretty good and not too expensive for one unit.

The few times I have ran them I had a unit of 5 with ML. Deployed them center field, as high up as I could, in cover. They fared not to bad, it was only when 'stealers outflacked and fleeted up behind them that they were over run. Otherwise they had their pick of targets until I got into close combat.

I often run a squad of 4 ML and just find the tallest point of the map that I can get to and plonk them down and start hurling rockets at things a 130 points for 4 ML is Great and normally kill more than their cost before they Die and well 4 Kraks or 4 Frags mess up most things days Mmm I remember wiping Orks in Planet strike with 8 ML devs.

Also has the advantage of being able to drive up 12 inches in a DOW mission, disembark and then run to a good spot, all while firing the twin lascannon.

This is how I've used mine. If the mission isn't DOW, then i deploy in a spot for the best LOS possible.

I've always found the Razorback helpful. It gets one more tank on the table for me... but best of all, in standard 40k - there is a 1-in-3 chance you will play DoW and have nightfight rules. Why waste several turns getting your squad into position... when you can just zoom them up in a razorback to a nice piece of terrain and have them run into cover, then be ready to shoot on turn 2.

And especially if your opponent out-flanks, genestealers for example, you don't want to be so close to the table edge. For a 3rd of your games, imo, its crucial, for the other 2/3rds it's an extra tank and possible transport as needed.
