ADD Project Log

So I am terrible about finishing armies. I've been playing for 12 years and it's been 11 since I've had a fully painted army (and oh was it an embarrasment). This project log and hopefully everyone on here's comments and urgings will get me to get some stuff done.

Anyway, on to the list of shame:

Imperial Paladins army: need to finish building the scouts, terminators, convert a scout biker, and finish my vulkan conversion; need to paint everything but 5 scouts

Bike army (raptors?): finish the ravenwing battalion I bought and paint it; figure out where to go from there

Alpha Legion: get serious about it...

Imperial Fists: work on the 2 companies of marines or repurpose them for different armies, all the models are in various stages of paint.

Table: finish building my gaming table and build more terrain for it.

So yeah, daunting list of to do's. First up: table and paladins. The table is an eyesore that's half built and taking up an entirebedroom in my apartment... Lame. The army needs to be built and have some paint on it (not finished) by the last weekend of this month (26th-ish) for a tournament.

And, with rambling, I have stumbled upon a concrete goal: build, convert, and have at least basecoated the paladins by march 26th.

And tonight or tomorrow I'll take pictures of the trainwreck my hobby has turned the apartment into. Thank Jeebus the girlfriend is into 40k too, so I can better get away with my slovenly ways.

So time to reboot this. I haven't painted anything in over a month and it's time for that to change. So today I'm starting a new project, one which supersedes all earlier projects. I'm going to take a bunch of my old space marines and paint them up as Exorcists, then sell them. At least that's the plan.

Here's the group shot, missing a veteran, some scouts, and needing some pairs, but otherwise I'm ready to get started.

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/13b395d0.jpg

Kinda blurry, I know, but it's from my iphone (all I have access to right now) and anyway, you guys get the idea.

The roster I have as of now goes like this:

Captain w/ relic blade and combi-melta

Command Squad w/ apothecary, 2x power weapon/ss, 1 power weapon, and need one more model

Terminators w/ heavy flamer and 4 chainfists

AoBR Dreadnought w/ drop pod

2 tac squads w/ plasma pistol, flamer and lascannon

2 twin las Rhazorbacks

Unbuilt scout box

5 man assault squad

Missile Launcher dev squad, may switch out the sgt model, but currently i'm using the old techmarine

I'm pretty set on this configuration, but minor tweaks would be much appreciated in order to make this easier to offload for a good amount of money. I am going to be painting this high quality, including hand painted iconography.

And tonight? Starting on the captain as my test mini. Woot!

so got some painting done. But I'm far from happy with the results (that's what I get for not painting for such a long time).

Here's the armor with a baal red wash to try and bring it all together and redden the armor again

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/64ab96f6.png

What do you guys think I should do to try and fix this? My two ideas were a devlan mud wash to tone it all down or a scab red glaze to darken the entire thing. Not sure which would work better to make it more exorcists and less fire lords.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I dont know what you can do for this guy, but perhaps a glaze would smooth things out. Apart from that I think your main problem is that you need to water down the paints a bit more and use a finer brush for the edge highlights. I am learning this myself right now, and that is the tips I got that helped a lot.

It all looks like a great start tough, and I'll have a look and give a comment when I can.

The paint does look blotchy on him, and that's because I used a cheap primer on him years ago. Won't be doing that again.

I ended up doing a similarly bright but much cleaner orange highlight on another model. Much happier. The knee pads didn't get any color because one is going to be company heraldry and the other something else cool. But thanks for the comments guys.

Here's the new work in progress:

It's like 60% done. What do you guys think?

Got a bunch of work done over the last two days (I get super productive when I have homework I'm supposed to be doing). Pretty happy with how things are turning out, although I may go back and redo a few details, and none of them are finished yet.

The sergeant. He's 95% done, just gotta do touchups, a few details, and freehand iconography

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/d7d23417.jpg

The squad thus far. They all have their black laid out, and I got the red done on the heavy flamer, along with plugging away at various details and getting him setup to be as far along as the sarge.

Of course, I'd love any critiques/comments you guys have to give.

And because I couldn't wait any longer, I started putting together my first upscaled grey knight. Spacers work so much better than trying to sculpt. Thanks Dan the Demon for the inspiration (and idea which I blatantly jacked, albeit with my own skill set) (http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=172506)

Anyway, here's the scale shot of the first rough model, gonna need a lot of green stuff work, but it's already impressive to me.

Also today, got more done on the Heavy Flamer terminator, but no pictures. So, as always, let me know what you guys think.

So I got some rough sculpting done on the Justicar. Gonna sand/shave it down to flush, but so far I'm really happy with how it's turning out. Let me know what you guys think.

Overscaling is a lot of work with little payoff. Rather than chopping everything up and stretching it out, you can get a decent effect by simply adding a touch of GreenStuff under the torso/belt to raise it up and extend the soles of the boots with some plasticard. You'd be surprised at how much that adds. Overall "bulkiness" can be achieved with accessories like pouches, scrolls, daggers, etc.

If you're going to continue down the line of cutting everything up and GreenStuffing to smooth it out, you might want to switch to BrownStuff. It's a *lot* easier to sand smooth. With GreenStuff you really want to get you final "smoothness" done during the sculpting stage without relying on sanding. If you're having a hard time with that (remember to always keep your tools wet and) don't be afraid to do the GreenStuff in two passes. First pass get it close to smooth, then another thin layer to make it closer to perfect.

Finally got a chance to work on more of my Justicar last night. All but done, just gotta finish his bolter feed and his wrists, then he's ready for paint.

Comments would be much appreciated.

Hey Q, thanks for the advice. I've been thinking of trying brown stuff for a while now. This is a slow burn project, so I'm going to definitely put in the work, regardless of how long it takes to upscale each one this way. The problem with spacers in the feet/pouches for the stomach is it can clutter the model, and a sharP eye can see what was done. With some practice this process should get more stream lined and I'll get the result I want. Anyway, I'm rambling. Let me know how you think it looks now all the same guys.

Hey guys, haven't been around for quite a while, and I haven't had much hobby time either. I've gotten 75% of the painting done for the Justicar, with pictures to go along with it. Working on all 4 other guys from the box. I also started a Raptor just for fun, and got a lot of the base coats down, and the armor is pretty much done. Anyway, here it all is:

Justicar

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/29ba9050.jpg

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/7fb98f62.jpg

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/06883dd4.jpg

And the ammo feed in progress along with the modified pack

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/9b0471fd.jpg

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/1a41b024.jpg

The legs look like crap, but I just had to get some painting done to keep going. The ammo feed will hopefully be cleaned up by paint, but I'm also going to smooth it down first.

Any comments are much appreciated, as always.

Also, the in progress raptor

Again, all comments are much appreciated, thanks guys.

Resurrecting threads is fun! But seriously, this thread is like my exorcists project. It got derailed early on by the summer, but now I'm back with a vengeance!

Here's the army to be painted

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/42472a02.jpg

And after just shy of two hours

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/9b7b9038.jpg

And close ups of one of the sergeants

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/91cf143d.jpg

This shot does a little better job of showing that yes, there is shading. Crappy camera plus a buried lighting setup equals terrible pictuers...

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/enderci/3c476cc9.jpg

Yeah. after previewing, you can't see anything... but I'll take better pictures and replace them later. Right now, I've gotta figure out how to mix my base coat and then thin it enough to use in my airbrush.

Cool stuff dude. I love my airbrush. Makes red sooo much easier. What i do is prime white, spray everything I want to be shaded black, and then spray red evenly over that. Gives a cool shading effect. Nice job though, I want to see how this turns out.
