Official Grey Knights Codex open for viewing in GW stores

Recommended Posts

A good buddy of mine spent quite awhile pouring over the copy in stores. I don't remember too many specifics of what he said (hard for me to keep the rumors and the facts straight) but it sounds like close combat will often be a bad idea... and the Dreadknights are almost as bad (for us) as rumored.

Anyone have any insights?

Someone posted an early batrep of SW vs GK.

It sounds like "hang back and shoot" is going to be the order of the day. Rune Priests will be effective as they will help negate some of those psychic powers, but then the Vindicaire will be able to snipe them out. CC definitely seems to be the biggest aspect of "codex creep" in 5th edition. For those of us that "came before" the only option seems to be "I guess I need to shoot more."

EDIT: Dang it Ragnarok! :)

Were discussing this in the BA sub forum too, and the idea isthat the Dreadknights blast weapon may be less powerful against a mech list, and that perhaps terminators and Vangaurd will make more of an appearance, while im hoping well see more balanced BA lists with less FnP all over the shop.

Do you guys feel WG may be a suitable unit to hold the line? GK seem to have Termies as troops, and while it costs alot can make them +2I in CC, but as far as ive seen SW are amazing in a mech set up plus you guys can be (IMO) the shootiest army out there (darn long fangs have ruined many 'o me plans!), so perhaps you guys can prevail a bit better then most, as the BA fast tank thing may be a moot point with us not wanting to get into CC straight away.

I think its some very interesting times ahead, especially with the rise of the Jokaero (man i looove those things!!)

If they is crazy enough to fight us, then we will have ta make em dead. Cause thats what

we do best, bub.

And I am curious to know if they will be getting a priest that grants them feel no pain,

like all the other new SM dexes.

I'd say from the looks of it, I'd have to agree with peple saying that shooting these holier than thou whiter than white (grey) do gooders will serve 2 purposes. Firstly, the more plasma and meltas we use the less whiter than white they'll be, and secondly they'll also die just like other marines.

What I can see as a useful unit (which I've been wanting to get one of anyway), is a pack of wolf guard terminators with storm shields and wolf claws, and either Arjac or a Wolf Priest, or both, to be able to face down whatever comes through the fire we can pour into them.

Though I'm sad to say that I can't see the list I use currently doing very well (no RP, no WG, no long fangs) because they heavily rely on getting into combat, and that's just not an option any more. It is sad that GW have created an army where the only realistic option is shooting it down before it gets to you, essentially reducing us all to more or less an IG gun line.

Staying in transports (although with those S8 Rifleman dreads that won't last long...) and shooting plasmas and meltas out the top hatch is probably the best bet, until the transports are destroyed and then slowly falling back while firing.

I've got a question - how does that "stealing their storm shields" thing work? And is there any way to avoid it? Because invul saves are the one thing that'll allow us to survive close combat... why oh why, does GW then give them something that can avoid even that last little bit of hope?

Shoot them. Shoot them lots.

Close combat is simply not an option, unless you're happy to lose a squad to finish off one of theirs (after you've shot it up)/

I've seen quite a few Space Wolves players get a bit narked that we can't simply charge straight into close combat and that we have to shoot instead...which takes me back to:

"The 6th Legion has a reputation." said Bear.

"All the Legions Astartes have reputations," replied Hawser.

"Not like ours," said Ogvai "We are known for our ferocity. We are thought to be feral and undisciplined. Even brother Legions consider us to be wild and bestial."

"And you're not ?" asked Hawser.

"If we need to be," said Ogvai. "but if that was our natural state, we'd all be dead by now."

He leaned down towards Hawser like a parent addressing a child.

"It takes a vast amount of self control to be this dangerous" he said.

Good to see GW keeping their games balanced

I'm not too stoked either, but I'd say its best to wait and see how it actually ends up being when played. It's happened so many times before (basically almost every time a new codex comes out) that people thought it'd be overpowered, but then turned out to be not as bad as it seemed. Shooting's gonna work as good as ever. Although I think this is the first time that GW has made such a hugely elite list (more so than eldar) so it's a bit of new ground.

Just another army I will study and then beat.

I do like the fluff and hope the models are great. Also from what I read, a decent finesse army which will be nice to see. Honestly, I can't wait for Codex: Sisters of Battle.

still RP[even better now] still LF with RL, still LL/Jaws good . still spaming GH . still speeders with RL good. nothing changes for SW. [unless I dont know someone played a razor gunline and used mystics , then he loses a unit].

I think the days of missile spam and MSU might be over.

You can't afford to get charged with grey knights when you only have 5 marines

Missile Launchers also aren't going to be as effective when there is so much 2+ on the table.

Ragnar Blackmane seems a good enemy agasint them now.

Mostly because he and his squad can be the bane of many elite armies: LOTS of attacks with boosted Str. and Init.

Of course, this is only for me, because if I ever see Halberds in game, I will as hell as possible shoot them!

Oh, and Ragnar got his Inv. Save anyway, since is not an equipment.

Ran

Rockets still bust dreads, rhino's chimeras, razorbacks, storm ravens, and pops PAGK squads, so they are still more than useful. Rapid firing bolters works just like it used to. Saga of the bear on your WL with TWM is still as great a buy as ever. Melta's still ID's the multiwound termies, and those Las/Plas razorbacks are just as good as ever. The guys who run plasma packs might be seeing more bang for their buck with those squads. Our Runepriests might become very coveted for their ability to just deny without letting the grey knights play in our reindeer games. (4+ deny without a roll off)

Hittem with plasma, hittem with scouts, cut down their specialists at range and use superior numbers in CC.

Same old song and dance.

Though no hendrik- we cant get S5 bolters, nor can we get a 2++ on our terminators.
