Hi all,

Long time lurker but very infrequent poster here (and this will be my first in the blood angels section EDIT: actually my first full stop!! Only took me 16 months after registering!).

I've had a marine army in a box upstairs for a while (2 years), unpainted and unloved whilst various WHFB armies recieved attention but are now finally seeing the light of day as I embark on painting the 4th Company of Angels Encarmine. I'll go into further detail about the force as it takes shape but for now, here is the first model of the 6th tactical squad:

I'm not entirely happy with the chapter badge but that will come as I paint more of them so am not going to lose sleep over it at this stage.

Now just 105 to go......

Thanks for the kind words guys.

The squad is well under way now and I'll update when it reaches completion. The plan is then to spray first 2 coats of red on the rest of the army (2 more tactical squads, 2 rhinos, command squad, commander, whirlwind, landraider, vindicator, deat company (white) ) before picking out details, highlights etc. I'm hoping this approach will give me a smoother finish.

The ultimate goal for the army as a whole is to go for a codex company - 6Ts, 2As, 2Dev, commander and command squad all with transports. This will be interspersed with "blood-angely" bits as they take my fancy; death company, Sanguinary guard, Furisos, Stormravens etc.

I've not really considered lists or anything - I'm a bit of a fluff-head and on field effectiveness is secondary to what looks/feels 'right'.

Welcome Gasgraham! And welcome to Angels Encarmine! Great work on the mini and lovin the deep red. If it helps...and you maybe already doing this...draw the chapter symbol with a graphite pencil over the top coat. Then fill it in with black.

Keep up the good work. ^_^

@ WarpWalker: Thanks for the tip - I'll give it a go. I'm getting more consistent.

Anyways, here is a brief update:

Without flash

.... and with.

Really enjoying it so far so fingers crossed the motivation keeps at it's current level. Weather permitting, spray basecoating en masse planned for the weekend; the rest of the army is now assembled and undercoated. 7 tacticals to go then their Rhino. Then the captain.

Edit: just seen I need to touch up the base of the right marine. I was just too eager to get the pics done! :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Well the first combat squad is now done. Slow going as (like many of you I imagine) I have to fit painting round work and the young family.

First, the pics.

New models:

Overall progress:

I have also put a basecoat on the rest of the army (5 tanks, 40 odd other marines). The plan was to do this using the spray gun but I had a nightmare with it. For some reason GW has a crappy plastic thread on the propelent cap and my particular one was not moulded well enough for me to attach the hose.

I took it back and GW replaced it. This one took the hose initially but then the hose shot off under presure from the propelent which knacked the thread. So back it went. Swapped it for a Furiso and, after a wasted Saturday, I was not in the mood for any detailed painting so out came the mechrite red and a couple of large brushes and I blitzed the whole lot. No more new-fangled tech for me!

Next up, completing Squad Largo before doing their Rhino transport.

Cheers,

Great work Gasgraham. How are the chapter symbols coming? The GW spray gun is crap. Go to a Hobby Lobby or Joann's Fabric store. They got quality air brushes real cheap.

Not to steal your thread but in a day or two I'll be posting my finished pics of my Angels Encarmine Sanguinary guard. I hope you'll include some of these colorful characters in your army.

Hey, welcome to the forum (although you have been here longer than me really)

Nice looking marines.. Chapter badge freehand is awesome, I haven't tried freehandy BA 3rd company bits on yet but I'm dreading it as I don't like to fail, haha.

@AGPO - Recipe is nothing out of the ordinary. Mechrite red basecoat followed by a thinnish layer of blood red. Wash model with devlan mud before re-applying a layer of blood red. Edge highlight with blazing orange before a 2nd highlight with blazing orange mixed with bleached bone - prefer the less 'yellowy' effect I got by using the bleached bone to lighten. Finally, the red is washed again with a thinned coat of baal red to blend the highlights and just richen up the colour a touch. I'm very happy with the tone this is giving me.

@WarpWalker - Looking forward to seeing the sanguinary guard. I will def be getting some - white guard and white DC are part of the attraction of the Angels Encarmine for me.

The free hand is getting there. A little inconsistent at times but I'm happy with the reults I'm producing. The sergeant's one was a pain: painted the symbol in red before going over and filling in the wings with black. Tricky as it was hard to get good coverage over the black background. I may re-do this to try and make it a little clearer but the effect is good enough for the time being.

Anyway, hopefully the wash has dried on the last 4 marines of the squad so it's time to go back to the painting table....

Cheers,

gasgraham
