Time for a proper introduction

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, youve probably seen me posting on the SW board a bit lately, and its in anticipation of finally updating my very old SW army taht i had amazing fun with waaay back in 2nd ed- all pewter (and my Bjorn has a lightning claw dammit!)So i thought id make it official and say g'day and can i get you guys a round of Ale?

Anyway, im currently tring to flesh out the background for my Chaos warband (Skyrars Dark Wolves - please dont hate me check out my thread - IA coming soon) and putting the finishing touches on my BA sucessors the Blood Hawks (IA is coming soon) but ive recently been given the opportunity to buy a SW battlebox, and i think that since ive been drooling over the new SW range this is the time to start.I will be busy.Very busy considering my ongoing battle to model teh seige of Vraks.

So, i need a little advise on any older chapter companies that may have been mentioned, as i have the codex and just want to see whats out there. The amount of tactics article is terrific, and im really drawn to the idea of the Grey Hunter as well as the the Wolf Gaurd, so ill be including them in a mech list i think.

Also, does anyone have experience modeling the Great Wolf company and is it very fiddly? (the company markings that is).

Thanks in advance and i should have done this a loong time ago :Troops:

Thanks for that darkseer, im thinking of casting my own pads ( ilove the look cast pads have) as im fairly handy with the GS, and TBH the thought of hand painting all those pads is a little daunting!

BTW nice blog, its one of the things that finally pushed me over the edge and into redoing my SW.

ITS OFFICIAL - i now own the battle force box, im almost as excited as when i killed Abaddon with my chapter master in our local tournie (6 bleeding months of tactical control and its all won with a fist to the face!).

Now to work out a decent list......

Ok, the battleforce box has the parts to make 10 blood claws, 10 grey hunters and 5 scouts as well as a drop pod.

Im thinking of making the blood claws another grey hunter pack and adding a couple of characters to get me started, as well as 2 rhinos for the hunters.

Woudl this be a good idea or are the bloodclaws worth keeping? Id like a force based aroung GH and WG for fluff reasons mostly, how many poeple use BC here regularily?

BC just cant really match up to the greatness that is GH's. The only way I see them used effectively and "worth it", imo, is with a WP in a Crusader. Otherwise, GH's all day for me. <_<

Oh, and welcome to the Fang btw! *Slides an ale over* ;)

Welcome to the fang!

Ale and meat is in the back, just shove some bloodclaws out your way <_< .

I do have BC and play them from time to time, but with the new dex mostly in apoc. For starters I recommend building two packs of GH out of the bf box contents and rather add a box of SW TDA WG. The rest of your plan sounds fine as it is.

Welcome to an old gamer from an older one!

I agree with your use of Blood Claws as Hunters. Claws are not nearly as effective as Hunters in my book and I really don't ever field them anymore. I may just be biased because I'm still pissed they lost 2 points of WS from when I bought them. To makes matters worse, the clerk from the LGS actuallly laughed when I asked for a refund! Can you believe it?

Anyway, I've hand painted all my markings, and it's really not that hard. The chapter badge is the most difficult. (you know, the skull and crossbones thing)

Even that isn't too bad once you give it a try a couple of times. After you try a few, you get a feel for how the brush strokes are used to create the shape. I know once I got going, it was almost like a recipe. First I brush from here to there, then in this direction, etc.

It's hard to explain, but it's not as difficult to paint as you may think. Just don't give up on it right away. You'll find you can make really nice markings with just a few trys:

I'm no pro at the freehand stuff, but it came along fairly quickly once I tried and I found that I really like the imperfections in the painting once they're done. (sorry for the glare in the pics, I painted these about 15 years ago and the pics are several years old) When I think about it, I can't see all the markings on the armor being the same for space wolves. I mean, can you see any self-respecting space wolf using a stencil? I'm sure the smurfs use them, but not the wolves.

Actually, I think many of my models are lead. The transition was in the early nineties, which is when I painted these. I can tell you, my Bjorn model could kill a large animal if you throw it.

I'd like to see the 13th co. guys. After reading the Ragnar novels, I really was taken in by the 13th, but now they're not around. :)
