The_Jackle_81
Hi This is my first post so hopefully I haven't broken any forum rules. I've recently started converting my salamanders over to blood angels after having very little success with them. Whilst I tried to utilise all the salamnders unique rules, so as meny melters/flamers as possible and lots of thuinder hammers on the termies, it became apparent that apart from my hidiouse bad luck on disc roling, my tactics were heavily reliant on the thunder hammers, I decided to choose an army that suited my prefered style of game play. Get up close and personnal and kick the crap out of anything. So I come asking for advise on how best to create an army that firstly kick the crap out of stuff, and secondly has enough fire power to fend off any heavily armoured opponent. Please note that i'm fairly new to gaming having previously just collected and painted models, so any advise would be most appreciated.
Zeller
1. Are you looking to do full mech, semi mech, DoA, tri-raven, raider spam, or some combination of everything? 2. I'm not sure if it's still necessary to have multi-melta attack bike squadrons with 5-man RAS with melta/powerfist in razorbacks for troops now days. 3. Point level? 4. Have you gone through some army lists in the BA army list section? HQ: You're probably looking at Mephiston, a base librarian with JP or with RAS in razorback, or some other named character that fits your fancy. The captain doesn't offer the army anything other than a WS6 marine and a rosarius. The reclusiarch is nice to lead DC or jump pack assault marines but you can get the same thing cheaper with an elite chaplain or lemartes with the death company. Elite: A priest here and there in every other razorback will add some durability and additional offensive modifications to your squads. Troops: Death company deathstar in LRC with chaplain is an option but very pricey. Alternatively the assault terminators from the elite section could do this. RAS are probably going to be the most appealing choice if you're looking to get into close combat and win. Blood talon death company furioso dreadnoughts in pods will mulch infantry and/or serve as a distraction if you shove it down your enemy's throat turn 1. Fast: Baals for whordes. BBQ baal is scary but needs to be way to close to enemy troops to be among the living for long. Attack bikes are a solid fire support platform. Speeders aren't bad with the heavy 2 missile launcher if you wish to crack light armor from afar. Heavy: Predator with auto-cannon/las sponsons are the most popular and arguably the most effective anti-tank. Dreadnoughts with twin autocannons are another light anti-tank killer. Move and shoot. Nice. These seem to be the most common elements of a BA force. Typically you'll see 4-6 5-man assault squads with PF/PW and melta in razorbacks, 3 auto/las predators, speeders in pairs or attack bikes with 2MM and 1HB. The heavy bolter in the bike squad takes the first wounds so the MM are okay. Mephy hides behind transports and then digs in. Libby's with shield of sanguinius can sit in your transports and offer cover saves to your vehicles. The priests will be in the razorbacks. You'll probably have 3 priests. Some general ideas. The_Jackle_81
RAS are probably going to be the most appealing choice if you're looking to get into close combat and win. I am going to ask what might seem likea very stupid question, but what does "RAS" mean/stand for? One of the only units i've had sucess with so far has been my 10 man death company assult squad with 2 TH and 1 PF, all the others have two CCW. Probably overkill and I know its very expensive but it does kill a hell of a lot of models and the TH & PF can crack open some armour. I do like the sound of Mephiston with the sanguine sword. Another question, should I go for a mainly assult troop army or tactical troops?

Isryion
Another question, should I go for a mainly assult troop army or tactical troops? There's a discussion thread about the value of tacticals, so that might be worth a read. However, based on your style, I'd go with more Assault Troops. I also think the fact that they're troops choices is one of the reasons why it's worth playing BA and make them unique.
d503
Go either 2 tactical and one assault or vice versa to begin with. With tacticals in rhinos of course. Find out which 2 vs 1 combo suits your play style more. I use 2 tacs, 1 assault and then have a deathstar - 5 termies with chain fists with a terminator reclusiarch in a redeemer. It's nasty.
