Looking at BFG

Leardinal

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have been looking at BFG for a while now, and have finally decided to make a small 500pt fleet to go along with my Space Marines. I am looking for this to be more fluff then competitive, so I am only planning on having one Strike Cruiser.

Strike Cruiser

3 Hunter Class Destroyers

3 Gladius Class Frigates

2 Nova Class Frigates

500pts Exactly

I am not sure if I need the Novas, and have toyed with the idea of dropping them in favor of another of the other 2 Frigates.

Any input/advice welcome

Strike cruisers aren't really well known for their firepower so you are usually better off with two. At 500 points one and a bunch of escorts could work alright. Putting the two novas in a single squadron with the gladius would work well and give you a two odd numbered squadrons which would be better than having two squadrons for 4 craft for VP calculations.

I think all I'd do at 500 points is swap your launch bays for s5 prow bombardment cannons. It's from the new Marine list and doesn't cost you anything. I'll give you a considerable power boost and keep the SC focused on shooting and not trying to RO. Once you get to higher point values, the novas will loose their utility since you will need all the points you can get to fit in enough ships.

Wow, thanks for the fast Reply

I hadn't thought of mixing the escorts, though it makes absolute sense and I plan on using them that way now.

What newer list? All I have found are the resources on GW's site. I do like the sound of a stronger Bombardment Cannon...

They are part of the 2010 FAQ/fleet updates that was just completed for BFG. The files are currently with GW awaiting uploading and final checking, but in the mean time you can get them here: http://tinyurl.com/23nul8q

Basically a new Inquisition fleet, new rogue trader fleet, two new marine fleet lists, a new IN fleet list, small update to AdMech, new replacement for the lost FW tau list, ork updates, eldar updates, some additional chaos ships, FAQ changes to nids and several ship point costs as well as a rather elegant fix to the turret suppression rules oddities and some major changes to ordnance markers.

In any event, I'd highly recommend getting your marine ships from FW. The escorts are about the same price, but the strike cruisers are around half the cost.

Maybe superficially. The FW versions match the look of the sketches in the Armada book better and have an overall better balance than the GW versions. The GW versions are also much less intricate and have flat surfaces much more in keeping with the AdMech line than the Marine or IN models.

If you compare the two, especially the hunter and gladius, they are quite different.
