Doubles Tournament Help

Recommended Posts

Ok, basically me and my brother plan is to get and paint a doubles army, as quickly as possible and then play in a doubles tournament, probably the Games Workshop one in Nottingham, whenever that one is... (if you happen to know, any information will be welcome)

Anyway, the two armies will be his Space Wolf army and my new Grey Knight army (i am not a bandwagon-er, i have always like the GK, but i have very very little money and were never feasible for me). Carrying on, we made a list for him and one for me from the leaked codex.

The lists were 750 points, because we found a 2011, doubles tournament rules document from GW that said:

750 points per player

You must have 1 HQ and Troop per army

and you must have an elite, fast attack and heavy support. over the whole army.

so we made our lists to suit that.

unfortunately we lost the document with the lists, so we decided rather than making them very ill advised, we thought that we would consult you guys. Basically the reason we have posted it here, is because the Space Wolves can really fill any holes in the GK list, so we thought we see what you guys thought.

so basically what do you guys think i should take? in a 750 point list.

some things i was thinking to base it around (if you want my own ill advised guidelines) are:

1) Mainly Power Armour models (to field more), but a few Termies

2) Brother Captain as HQ

3) Vindicare Assassin (to pick off any annoying PF, Psy Hoods etc.)

so any hints/tips/suggestions are welcomed with open arms!

Athiair :D

ps. the codexs are definite, no changes.

I'm not that familiar with the new grey knight dex (you will get better advice when everyone has their own copy) but I guess I would go with a Rune priest over a librarian for anti-psyker unless you decide you really want the GK libby... although I think rune staffs and psychic hoods stack so you should ruin most peoples days when it comes to psychic powers.

Non of the space wolves fast attacks really stand out in my mind (take that thunderwolves) so maybe teleporting grey knights (a gk grandmaster can make these guys scoring? or give them scout... or other units for that matter so that is another thing to consider)... first turn charge XD

Elites... If I assume the space wolf player isn't taking wolf guard sgts and so on then maybe a rifleman ven dread with psybolt ammo.... for elite... then again a normal one as a heavy support would do... space wolf long fangs are awesome as heavy support Bleah head explodes too much choice!

Wait for the new dex to be in your hands :D and make the list with your partner to get as much synergy as possible and consider all the different missions and deployments.

Wolf guard in a storm raven?

You also might want to take a Grand Master in stead of a BC. The Grand Strategy is SOOOOOOOOO awesome, and he is an amazing fighter in both ranged and close combat AND can provide servo skulls (VERY useful)

I think as an overall HQ, he beats a wolf lord, but that's my opinion.

ok thats a good point about the Grand Master. mind you i still don't know what servo skulls so (and information?)

the main reason i said BC is because he was cheaper, but i think a GM will be more useful (now) ;)

thanks

Athiair ;)

my brother has made his list for the 750 points:

Rune Priest w/ Plasma Pistol, Wolftooth Necklace, Wolf Tail Talisman, Saga of the Beastslayer

3 Wolf Guard w/ Combi-Weapons, 2 Power Fists

5 Grey Hunters w/ Plasma Gun, Wolf Standard

8 Grey Hunters w/ Meltagun, Wolf Standard

9 Grey Hunters w/ Plasma Gun, Wolf Standard

5 Long Fangs w/ 4 Missile Launchers

it does me i have to field a Fast Attack which i don't think will be a problem with the teleport strike squads which could be very useful in these tournaments.

so if anyone is willing to suggest an example list for my 750, i'm listening. but i am very happy with suggestions, if you don't want to make a list :D

thanks.

Athiair :P

ps. i was going to make two lists 1 with Vindicare and 1 without. To Compare Between

ok small update, i have been reading Resv's thread who is explain how effective most of the units are in the dex. and going by what he says this is what i am looking to take.

Grand Master (HQ)

Terminator Squad (Troop)

Interceptor Squad (Fast Attack)

Psy-Rifle Dread (Heavy Support)

Vindicare Assassin

and if i have any points left (which i doubt) it will go on Strike Squads hopefully with a Rhino

if anyone has the codex would this list be possible to fit all of this in to 750 points. and if not advise me. and even if it is if you suggest it isn't a good list i am all ears :)

thanks in advance

Athiair :D

The next doubles tournament in nottingham is september i believe. I was at the one in Feb and came 25th out of 132 teams with a Space wolf/Bloodangels mix.

Here's a couple of lists i've been toying with for the september tournament : -

Grey knight grandmaster – 3 servo skulls – melta bombs – digital weapons – rad grenades master crafted nemesis force sword = 225

5 x terminators – 4 x nemesis force halberds – 1 x daemon hammer – psycannon - incinerator

Brotherhood banner – psy bolt ammo = 275

Storm raven – hurricane bolters teleport homer = 250

Total = 750

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

_____

Librarian – Teleport homer – The summoning, warp rift, might of titan – master craft force sword - digital weapons = 185

5 x terminators – 4 x nemesis force halberds – 1 x daemon hammer – psycannon - incinerator

Brotherhood banner = 255

Ordo malleus inquisitor = 3 x servo skulls – power armour – psyker - hell riffle = 87

Henchman warband

3 x plasma cannon servitors = 60

2 x Jokero = 70

2 x warrior = 8

Henchman warband total = 138

Dread knight – heavy psycannon = 170

Total = 748

The top list doesn't give you much in the way of models but would allow you to forfill the requirements set out in the tournament guidlines and would give you

a hard as nails assult unit that should smash anything it hits. The storm Raven just flys around the board shooting tanks with multi meltas and blending infantry units with assult cannons and hurricane bolters.

The second list would require your brother to field a fast attack unit in his force so you could get the second HQ inquisitor and fire either 5 plasma cannon shots a turn or 2 lascannons and 3 plasma cannons.

As an aside to your question on GK lists i would urge your brother to consider trying to fit Arjac Rock fist into his list as he was awesome in all our games. In the one game we did lose (which was against the guys who came 2nd overall) the last turn of the game had Arjac chasing an entirre Chaos marine and daemons army into the corner of the board to get away from him :P

Battle - Captain

ok i will advise him on taking Arjac as what he seems to have done seems to be amazing.

me and my brother are just going to have fun. we don't plan on doing April 18th , i will not have an army by then

and the september could be interesting as he may be out of Uni still, but i may still be at school :/ which is slightly annoying.

but if it's october during half term i may be lucky (but i think he doesn't get half term at uni)

does anyone know when the date will be announced?

and has anyone been able to try and build a list from what i wanted? if not i can wait 3 weeks (just about) :woot:

and secondly a librarian would be good, but i think a Grand Master would suit the army better. OPINONS? (caps on purpose for your attention...)

Athiair :D

ps. i hope i don't meet you at the tournament.

I play both Wolves and GK so maybe I can be of assistance.

Ideally, Wolves want to cover the Power Armor and you provide the Termies. Both of which can score and both of which compliment eachother greatly.

You also want to consider your strengths and weaknesses. Grey Knights excel at the 24" inch band and Space Wolves can provide excellent long range support with Long Fangs and Razorbacks.

Personally, I'm all about putting MANS on the table, so I would probably do something like this:

749

HQ:

Rune Priest (Chooser, WTT) = 115

TROOP:

9x Grey Hunters w/ WG (Rhino, PF/cbM, Meltagun, WS, MotW) = 243

8x Grey Hunters w/ WG (Rhino, PF/cbM, Meltagun, WS, MotW) = 228

ELITE:

Wolf Guard

HEAVY:

6x Long Fangs (5x ML) = 140

+ Wolf Guard (CbM) = 23

750

HQ:

Grand Master (MC NFS, MC Psycannon, Blind, Rad) = 250

TROOP:

10x GKT (MCDH, DH, 2x Psycannons, BBanner, Psybolts) = 500

1499 points, you provide the elite, he provides the awesome base troops, you have your heavy, your elite (Wolf Guard are elite) and you're ready to rock.

The background lore behind this army is...

The Space Wolves are outnumbered with their small scouting party when a daemonic incursion occurs during a routine patrol.

Just when all seems lost, the 1st Brotherhood of Your-favorite-Grey-Knight-here Deep Strikes in and everyone's a happy camper.

just a small thing, there isn't a Fast Attack... which according to the rules we have to have...

just wondering

well i just made a rough list with the fake codex (which is obviously were bad and inaccurate)

but i came out with this. which even i can tell is a bad list. this is in reply to what my brother made in a post above.

Grand Master

5 Terminators

5 Teleporting PAGK

Dreadnought w/ Autocannons and Psycannon Armour.

it does have 110 points left.

which imo too low on models. so does anyone have suggestions?

i would like something like that, which is well mixed and quite cheap (money-wise)

so anything else? :P but i think the model count is challenging...

Athiair :D

Here's a good space wolf/Grey knight combo for you : -

Wolf Priest - 100

6 Grey Hunters, melta - 95

wolf guard with power fist -38

RHINO - 35

Arjac - 188

7 Grey Hunters, power weapon, melta - 125

DROP POD - 35

Wolf guard = 18

5 x long fangs - 4 x missile launchers - 115

Total = 749

Librarian – Teleport homer – The summoning, warp rift, might of titan – master craft force sword - 180

5 x terminators – 4 x nemesis force halberds – 1 x daemon hammer - incinerator = 205

5 x terminators – 4 x nemesis force halberds – 1 x daemon hammer - incinerator = 205

6 x GKIS =156

Total = 746

This combination covers all your bases eachhas a hq and troops choice, the wolves cover HV support and elites the Grey knights cover the fast attack.

This list would work like this you sit the long fangs at the back the board on your HQ or objective they can use 4 krack missiles to take out transports light tanks space marines who stick their necks out of cover or use frags to clear out orks, guard, gaunts etc You stick arjacs unit down next to any enemy unit you want dead. If its armour then arjacs st 10 ap 1 hammer or the melta gun in the unit should take care of that. The rune priest either deploys with the long fangs and sits there firing living lightning at things the entire game or put him in the pod with arjac and world wolf things like tau battle suits or nid carnifexes. Have the grey knight lib run up the board with a handy space wolf rhino shield and have the terminators come in around him and try to box in whatever you want to kill. The GKIS could support Arjacs unit on turn one with weith of fire.

Just a thought. ;)

Battle-captain

it is a very nice list to be honest and seems to cover all the bases.

we will definatly try it out with proxy's to see if it works.

and of course we will also use the one with plenty of grey hunters to fill up the board with models :)

and then have the nails Grey Knights in there

this is going to be a long process finding an army with enjoy playing that is competitive. but not too competitive so we become too serious, because we want to have fun ourselves and with our opponents.

it's a long process, and we are so welcome with all the lists you post and i am sure we will try them...

i think the main thing for my Gk army, is what HQ: Librarian or Grand Master.

it will be interesting...

thanks

Athiair :D

another question, bringing this back alive is what do people suggest for weapon options in terminator/PAGK squads? as in halberds/swords/hammers...

i have no idea on this topic to be honest and i am really looking for help. so any pro/con lists that you guys have will be invaluable to me :tu:

thanks in advance. bear in mind this is to take on all armies

thanks again

Athiair

guys with the codex out tomorrow, i was wondering what you guys thought of for the 750 point army...

especially those weapons for the squads.

this was what i was thinking on taking:

Grand Master or Librarian

10 man PAGK squad with assorted weaponry

5 man Terminator Squad with assorted weaponry

Psyfileman Dreadnought

or i would split the 10 man PAGK squad into a 5 man normal and a 5 man rapid deplyoment squad.

you opinions on this?

and on to the NFW choices this is my opinon of what units i'm taking:

Grand Master: Halberd (i like the metal model they have) or Hammer

Libby: Don't know

Terminators: 3 Halberds, 1 Hammer, 1 Falchions

Interception Squad: Falchions with maybe 1 deamonhammer

Standard Squad: Ratio of Halberds to Hammers 4:1

i was contemplating taking some purifiers, but i don't think i could fit them feasibly into the points.

thanks, especially to those with a codex already who can try and build a list from what i could like. thanks ;)

Athiair :D

With doubles, my experience is that you want one army providing the numbers and one providing some form of deathstar. With that in mind I'd let the wolves proivide the numbers, since they are cheaper and can be made more versitile. That leaves you the job of suppling the deathstar. So here's what I had in mind:

Librarian (165)

Quicksilver, Warp Rift, Shrouding

5 Terminators (235)

2 Pairs of Falchions, Banner, Hammer

Stormraven (205)

Multi-melta, Assault Cannon

Vindicare (145)

I had to drop a few upgrades I would have liked to have had in order to squeze in the vindicare. If you don't care much for him, then with his points I'd put a Warding stave on the Librarian and a third set of Falchions on the terminators, along with master crafting the Justicar's Hammer. The problem with that is it leaves you with a near useless number of points to work with. Unfortunate really, but there isn't really a way around it.

Then for the Wolves;

Rune Priest (100)

JotWW, LL

4x 5 Grey Hunters (480)

Meltagun, Razorback

Long Fangs (140)

5x Missile Launcher

You've got 30 points to play with on the wolves so if you can take multiple elite choices how about a lone wolf? Or possibly a chooser and runic armour for the rune priest.

Hope that helps

Random Guy

that list is actually quite cool :) and does seem to combine plenty of stuff that i wanted :)

thanks a lot

i only see one problem with it; that being that the Grey Hunters squads are on the small side, although they are in a razorback which should help their survival...

well i'm getting my codex in an hour or two (i can't wait!), so i can make some lists myself :)

thanks again for a very good and interesting list :)

Athiair :D
