Hello from a new 40k Fan

Recommended Posts

A few years ago the idea of a 40k fan who has never played Table Top may have been a big deal, but with the advent of the DoW games it seems like it won't be such a surprise. Still, I suppose I should explain my history with 40k if only because this post will be blank otherwise.

My first introduction to the game was at a second hand bookstore in 4th grade that had a copy of Rogue Trader availble. I read through almost the entire book before saving up enough money to actually buy the thing. From there on I searched the world wide web - with the wonder that was Alta Vista - for as much information as I could about 40k. I even got my parents to take me to a local comic book shop to watch some adults play the game. Sadly, however, when I finally decided I wanted to get into the game my parents forbid me from doing so. They remembered my short-lived and expensive obsession with Pokemon and were not willing to part with their cash or let me part with my cash on what they thought of as a money sink. So while living under their roof I could never own my own piece of the Warhammer 40k universe.

When I left for college I saw myself opening a Table Top gaming group at my university but sadly for me the only nerd obsessions were anime, magic, video games, and DnD. I suppose it wasn't that sad, as I love almost all of those things - I only have a passing interest in Magic as I enjoy the fluff - but it did nothing for my childhood fantasy. So with college studies eating away at my free time I did what little I could to salve my desires and bought many of the 40k Black Library books and all of the DoW games.

Fast forward to now. One year out of college and with a job that gives me ample disposable income I've decided it may be time to take the plunge. Being a storyteller at heart, I plan on easing into the game first by establish my fluff while I read up on the rules of the game and then hopefully enter with some semblance of order and my very own DIY Space Marine chapter. For now, however, expect to see me hanging around the Fluff Forums or discussing the DoW games. For anyone else here still plays Dark Crusade know that I find most of my enjoyment comes from playing the Firestorm over Kronus mod and would be eager to play a game or two with anyone who wishes!

A few years ago the idea of a 40k fan who has never played Table Top may have been a big deal,

I have been fascinated by 40k for years, started with the adverts in the old Dragon Magazine from the '80s then progressed with an interest in the BL fiction. Didn't get into it until last year. Two decades of lurking before I ended up buying an experimental set of Space Marines to paint and play with.

Anyway, I like nachos too. Welcome to the B&C, cousin!

I've been hooked on the 40k fluff for over two years. It started for me with DoW. I first saw the game in Target and looked it up. I spent the next month on the GW website memorizing all the different units. After buying the game (DoW) I was quickly disappointed to find that it didn't include every single unit in the table top game. So i set off in search of mods to supplement this shortcoming. I found the Thousand Sons mod and quickly became fascinated by them. My search for info on them lead me to Lexicanum and I've since spent a considerably large portion of my personal time amassing every shred of knowledge on 40k I possibly can. While I've never played the game in my life, I'm totally captivated by the lore of it all. Man, it's good to hear from people who feel like I do!

Thanks for the hello guys!

I read your IA - very good, and I appreciate the way you took criticism like a true professional. I hope to read more of your stuff in the future

If you still play DoW - Check out firestorm over Kronus. It contains I believe all the units from Codex Astartes and other rulebooks, and most people who play online do "set piece battles." Where you build up and buy all the units you need for a point list and then hash it out like a normal game - it's quite fun.

As a matter of fact I'm familiar the FoK mod. Unfortunately (as far as I know) they have yet to release a version comparable with Soulstorm which is the only DoW game I own. I actually tried using the Dark Crusade version but it didn't work. It's a shame because FoK is a great, maybe the greatest, DoW mod to date.
