Deathwing Army WIP - for LPC

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

A few first for me:

1. Posting a project of mine in this forum for the first time ever.

2. Working on a modelling project for the first time in 6 years.

3. First army for WH40K4 and WH40K5 (last army i made was during 3rd edition!!)

4. First time ever using greenstuff for casts and sculpts.

5. First time ever participating in the LPC

Given the absolutely brilliant standard of painting and converting in this forum I am looking for simple suggestions that might improve on the work presented. Very happy to hear criticisms, concerns and comments.

I, Shadowguard of the Dark Angels Forum, vow on the honour of my Chapter to paint and present at least Five squads of Deathwing terminators led by a Master of Deathwing in TDA as part of a 1500 point DW army on or before the 31st of March, 2011. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done.

The main concept I am trying to achive is to convey dynamism for the terminators and each member of the squad is posed to support each other, Classically the single TH/SS Terminator will be displayed as if protecting the cyclone missle launcher while two others will be on each flank with the sergant somewhere next to the TH/SS termie.

Started work on this on 13 February 2011; Phase 1 completed today 20 february 2011. Detailed notes on progress can be seen on my temporary LPC Page

PHASE II:

Commenced: 28 February 2011. Completed: 15 March 2011

This phase consisted of all the five squads being put together. I essentially hacked, ripped, swapped and glued to my hearts content. Only the two cyclone launchers were not glued on to allow painting. The rest I will paint as the models are. below are the completed squads.

CONCEPTS: I tried to maintain three major concepts for this project.

1. Each terminator would have a uniquely pose as well as be individualized by way of icons and equipment.

2. Every terminator would sport atleast one feather sometimes more in memory of those who died in the plains world. I especially wanted the feathers to be gigantic rather than resemble small totems carried by the spacewolves.

3. The storm shields would also all be different from one another and purposefully be bulked up with thick greenstuff casts.

IMPORTANT: I have not worked on any models for nearly 6 years and have never ever before tried my hand at green stuff. So, take the following images with a pinch of salt! ^_^

I wanted the armature for the apothecaries narthecium to be quite bulky to allow him to cut through terminator armour. I also attached the sensosrs and searchlight from th apothecary backpack to the right arm itself in the front and underneath.

Master of Deathwing Belial: This is an entirely new model built from the basics. I had initially planned to use the legs and right arm of Logan Grimnar to provide Belial with a menacing and charging concept. As I realised the size descrepancy between the new plastics and the od metal miniatures. As a result this version of Belial was born.

I managed to sculpt for the very first time an entire robe along with a large amount of feathers, purity seals, messages etc. I think I have managed to capture the assaulting terminators menacing body language.

QUICK PAINTING: Given the fact that there's just about two workable weekends left for the end of the LPC I was looking for tips on quick painting. My idea was around the following: I was thinking of trying a black undercoat (again, have always previously use white, so it's another first) and then one of the foundation paint to do a base coat, may be a wash, bleached bonefor the armour, highlight, may be another wash. and then may be some Forge World dust/powder.......something like that. Any suggestions from the masters?

Your Belial is looking mighty fine. And you say you've never used green stuff before this project?

never touched the stuff.... The project so far has taken 6 weeks mostly working on 3 of the six weekends... and you can see the progression from squad 1 to squad 5, the GS stuff gets a little better as it goes on.... become a bit more audacious with casting some of the little bits... :D

black undercoat, brown foundation (forgot the name) drybrush, khemri white (??) foundation drybrush (bit lighter), devlan mud wash (what else :D), highlights picked out with a bleached bone/white to your liking.

you could paint green thingies and the "red" on the bolters and the boltgunmetal before the devlan wash, after that you can light them up again, if needed.

results are something like this:

see here

edit: green is gnarloc or the lighter variant foundation, red is mechrite foundation.

About the painting I'd not recommend black primer since you're gonna do them white. White primer, a light wash of blue in the recesses and a layer of bleached bone on the armour plates and then another wash of some sort perhaps. I dunno :P

Looking good so far tough.

Yup, that's what I get exactly. Half say black primer the other half white primer.......All my previous models had white primer with bleached bone paint scheme on power armoured marines.... I wonder if, with the use of foundation paints, the black primer is a better way to go?

Flint&steel: Did you just dry brush the two foundation layers on to the lack primer? Didn't know that would work.. :P

Yup.

First layer was black primer, then inked the model blac, after drying a first layer of khemri brown (drybrush), then a lighter drybrush of dheneb stone.

This will (hopefully) give you some dept while speeding up the paintwork.

A wash of devlan mud (love the stuff !! cheating in a pot !!) makes everything even "better"; will give dept and all.

You should use the wash AFTER all the boltgun parts are done though.

Better would be (I think) white primer, foundation white "wash" (dunno how I did it), fles wash after that.

You end up with a brownish miniatur, but if you then drybrush the white foundation paint it will work out fine.

There was a site somewhere with different tutorials on the DW, undervcoating white and using a fleshwash was reccommended there too.

I suggest you use what you have, and see what is the best for you. Also considering the time you have left.

But I'd go with white undercoat, white "paint", flesh wash, drybrush white, paint details/other colours (preferably with foundation paints, they cover oh so well), wash with devlan mud, done.

Perhaps painting some highlights if needed, but the force should look decent and tabletop ready.

Jan

edit: the third photo in the link in my previous post, and then the terminator to the left: he's colourwise the closest to the RL colour of them.

All got black undercoats though. I wouldnt do that for pure DW.

These are undercoated white and fleshwashed after that. The one in the back has a highlight with either dheneb stone OR pale sand (Vallejo model colour). I am not sure, too long ago.

I should restart them some time... :D

Anyway: you've got a great base to work with, colourwise, if they look like this. You only have to highlight.

Good luck !

Thanks Flint4stell: That gives me a lot to consider. I have always used white primer in the past for both my Green Dark Angels (small army, first army) and the subsequent metal DW army and bleached bone Shadow Guards Army.

I have always wanted to try a black primer for a light colour scheme... but shoudl i try that here?? Hmmm Your technique sounds promising, then you spoilt it by suggesting I go white :P . Anyway, I'll sleep on it tonight and start tomorrow as time is running out!!;)

Thanks for the advice.

Funnily enough, Ive used this yes, this here link as a basis for "my" DW.

Nowadays there are better paints though, and options (foundation paints and the new washes). But Kurgan has a nice and "easy" way of painting them.

But since it's "your" site, you knew that already, didnt you :D ?

Cheers, and good luck !

Sir I think you're telling porky pies concerning your usage with green stuff

Heh... not really telling porky pies... To be honest I bought my first lot of greenstuff when I went to Birmingham UK in 2002 and was there till 2004 and never touched the stuff. Got caught up with the EoT campaign and the parallel Dark Angels gathering of Angels Campaign we ran.

Back in OZ in 2004... haven't had a chance to do any modelling or painting until now. I've read a lot about it on the forums, drooled over some of the works... and then only with this project did i have the guts to try it. You can certainly see the difference between squad 1 and squad 5... Most of the icons are cast from plastic icons simply because I could mould it to the curved shapes of the legs and shoulder pags. They are still too thick and ungainly.

The only de novo greenstuff work are the purity seals, giant feathers and finally Belial's robe. I messed up the tis of the robe as you can see, I created two long strings and twisted them together but could not get the tight wrap that i wanted.

Its' actually a lot easier than i thoguht.... I think more players should have a go..it certainly looks daunting when you see some of the masterpieces that the gusy on this forum put out.... but starting small helps..

A short update. Not much has happened as I ready for the Phase III (Painting) and watch time slip away....

Firstly Phse IIB: A small add on for the phase II. I looked carefully at the collection of 26 terminators and it was quite obvious that in Squad I had very minimal greenstuff add-ons as that was the squad I started my GS experiments. In particular, the sergeant had nothing added, although the base model of Commander Culln was quite intricately modelled. I felt I should go back and add some green so here are the images to compare.

The original Squad 1

Updated Squad I

Also some close ups of the sergeant.

PHASE III prelim

Commenced: 26 March 2011.

This is where the difficult part of painting the models starts. I did a test run on two of my left over Shadowguards Chapter assault marines who had been previously primed with white and spravyed with bleached bone. Afetr much agonizing and reading all the advice from the B+C boards, and considering the time limitations i decided to try two washes.

http://fortressofunforgiven.homestead.com/Temp_LPC_Ph3_DW_Squad_00_01.jpg

In the first photo the marine on the left has Gryphone Sepia wash while the one on the right has Devlan Mud wash. This also happens to be the first time I am using washes so it might be thick or thin..... I actually like the effect on the right, the one with a single wash of Devlan Mud.

http://fortressofunforgiven.homestead.com/Temp_LPC_Ph3_DW_Squad_00_02.jpg

The second photo shows the models with a second wash using the other colour. So the marine on the left has now had a a wash of Devlan mud over the original nne Sepia while the model on the right has had the reverse. I still like the model on the right. The wash hasn't quite dried yet and might be a little too much but I think if i then touch up with a 50:50 mix of bleached bone and skull white and then a few white highlights it should be presentable.

I have decided to use white for all feathers including chest icons, should pad icons and any other angel icons including shield icons. Angel robes will be green and the swords be red. Not quite sure whether the stormbolter casings should go with the old style green or black....

Any ideas or suggestions will be very much appreciated....I don't think I'll make the deadline but I will definitely finish this somewhere within a week of it.....

I have to admit it has been a great ride and will continue to be so, but three days ago I came to the conclusion that I will not be able to complete the LPC vow in time. It is slightly disappointing for me but it was a weighed decision to accpet reality early and come clean. :P

The main reason (apart from being able to only spend time on this project during wekends in any meaningful manner) is the decision I made early when i began experimenting with my sculpting. I decided that I would glue the terminators in their final positions so that I could add the GS content, mainly the purity seals and giant feathers in a dynamic fashion reflecting movement and gravity based on their posture. I knew it would make the final painting harder but didn't realise how much harder and slower it would make it.

On Sunday night, when all three coats of the washes had dried, i considered whether i should simply use four colours, black, white, green and red to provide basic details, paint the bases green and complete the vow at a minimalistic level. I couldn't do that given the amount of work i had ut in to these models and the resurgence of passion for the hobby. I just have to continue plodding along carrying the banner of failure... but.. I am not really disappointed... I managed to nearly complete a entire deathwing army and will do so soon.

I achieved a number of firsts: ;)

- First time doing green stuff sculpting

- first SG robe

- first time using washes

I will cintinue the blog in the usual fashion.

I really congratulate all those Dark Angels players who have already completed their vows!! ;)

and so the saga continues......

So i got touching up Bleached Bone manually in to all the little crevices and joints. This is when it started dawning on me that things might be a little difficult later on...duuhhh... ;)

Phase IIIC

two coats of Devlan Mud. The first very tentatively applied to the joints, linings and crevices. I became braver and splashed more around for the second coat. Might have overdone things a little. It's still tedious work to wash two layers on the 26 models!! ;)

Phase IIIE: Detailing

So I have finally reached the detailing stage. I plan to do the following:

First, the blacks for the weapons, metal tubing and crux terminator and other icons which will either get boltgun dry rbush or in the case of the latter grey and white drybrush to mimick a stone effect.

Second the whites. All wings in the models will be white and I plan to try Sandalphon's suggestions.

Third the greens for the robes, tabards, SB casings and angels robes.

Fourth the Reds for the swords and eyes and lenses. Not quite sure at present if the right shoulder pad mtif should all be red including feathers) or just the sword with the wings being white.

Finally the blues for the power weapons.... I will try and do some sort of sheen / lightning etc..

The I would plan to touch up with bleached bone or slightly mixed with white and finally highlight edges with white.

That's the plan and I think it will ake me a good three to four weekends...... Oh and won't forget the bases.

For the rest of the WIP I will only display Squad 1 to limit the numer of images and to make it easier to follow. You will find more details on my Deathwing Army Blog

http://fortressofunforgiven.homestead.com/Temp_LPC_Ph3E_DW_Squad_01_01.jpg

DW Squad 1 with black udnercoats for gun casings, metal tubings and skull icons.

Obviously your comments and criticisms are welcome as always and my humble apologies for letting the community down by not completing the LPC vow. My heartiest congratulations to all those unforgiven who have honoured the lion and the legion by participating and completing their vows!

Great stuff! How'd you make the narthecium/reductor arm for the Apothecary?

Thanks Jaxom. The apothecaries right arm is from one of the Terminator Lightning Claw arms with the "claws" removed. I cut out the chainsword from a chainfist along ith it's power cord and stuck it to the right arm. The Sm command Squad apothecaries Narthecium was removed in tow parts and then added as shown. Finally I removed the two stick out bit's from the SM Apothecaries back pack (light and the other "monitor" section and stuck tem respectively on the front of the right fist and under the right fist. Looked nice and bulked up....

A few days later i saw GW's Grey Night terminator Sprue on WD which has an Apothecary Left Arm and light & monitor sections for the back !!!

You can go eiter way...:P
