Hfran Morkai
So we know that the 13th Company were lost to the Chapter shortly after the events on Prospero, but just who were these warriors? I am of the personal belief they were a shock company for the Legion, deployed right into the heart of battle in order to let the beasts release their full potential. The Wulfen were used as a tool of war as opposed to being culled. This is backed up by several points. It was whilst persuing the Thousand Sons that the Space Wolves lost the thirteenth Wulfen Company.-2nd ed SW codex page 9 A similar passage exists in the fifth edition Space Wolf codex, indicating they did not have a large number of Wulfen or Wolf Bitten but they were in fact a company based around this. This is what these books have to say on the matter and is definitely something I like the idea of, a full company of bestial warriors. It would be awesome to model out a detachment of them for my Heresy era army as well, as a separate element but tied in. Does anyone else have conflicting views on the origins, composition or utilization of the 13th? I'm interested to see what they mean to you. Valerian
13th Company Index Astartes article is a great resource (WD 283). They were speculated by the Inquisition to have numbered about 1,000 men. Half of the sources that I have say they were lost chasing after the Thousand Sons after Propero, while the others say that Russ sent them after Abbaddon into the Eye of Terror, when he returned to realspace with the rest of his Wolves. Legend has it (from WD 156), that an overly proud Wolf Lord (Jorin Bloodfang), chose the Wulfen as his totem and his Great Company was cursed. Other sources provide a simpler answer that Russ just gathered all of those with the Mark of the Wulfen into a single warband. dragon950
The 13th had a large number of wulfen and have more now that they have been in the warp for some time. But unlike the wulfen in the current chapter, they have been able to tame the curse of the wolfen and act more like normal marines. They are like death company but without weapons and some better stats. Grimtooth
Going to get a few answers asking that here. Even you take all sources into account it ranges widely. 13th Co were formed mostly of Russ' retainers from Fenris that were implanted at an older age then normal and thus suffered from the Mark more greatly. Referreed to as the Grey Beards, referred to themselves as the Wolf Brothers. Were sent into the Warp at the Battle of Prospero by Russ to persue 1k Sons. Sent after the Battle of Terra by Russ into the Eye of Terra to pursue Traitor Legions. Comprised mostly of members fully manifested Wulfen or just those Marked. Accounts of them do show them being used at the very tip of the "spear" as a shock unit. Thats not true the death company have far superior stats being that 13th company have no stats and all. If you use the wulfen guard from the apoc. datasheet then those are the stats that those from the 13 company that have transformed into wulfen have.
