Termie's General Marine log

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I wanted a mini break from my LPC (not enough spray paint for my LRR actually), so I have been trying new techniques for painting my centerpiece miniatures and I found out black is a b**** of a color to do right, I am actually using an off black color (chaos black base coat with layers of CB mixed with codex grey getting lighter). I looked up some tutorials on the matter and an artist friend of mine said to do a pure white highlight then feather it down as needed. The AOBR marine is the result of the white highlights, battle damage and Eye glow, can I have some input on improving the techniques used on him so I can utilize it better on my chapter master?

Experimental Marine (only the head is painted)

My biggest concern is the white highlight I tried to feather the edges so it isn't as hard but I am afraid it is too stark a contrast, should I just do codex grey or another lighter grey?

Thanks J_P and Grot,

@jester prince: If you can find it it would be very appreciated, I am using a CMON guid for most of my work.

@Grotsmasha: I see how it could look odd but its kind of like a under lens glow you know what I mean? I might see how it looks on Ryoto (the CM) when i do it.

I did a ton of work on Ryoto today, I did the eyes, the highlights (might feather them more), the battle damage, the cloths and purity seals (both about 70% done). I also tried to make a warmer metal.

After a long day's work, this is what I managed to get done, Im not sure how to highlight the leather or what to do with the bone accents so I could use a few ideas and does anyone have ideas to improve the sword?

typically when I highlight leather, I straight-line highlight a single side with Elf Flesh (any light skin tone will do.) Then, take the same elf flesh and mix it 50/50 with Calthan Brown. Dabble a little water in there, and cut into the individual straps, trying to leave a little of the pure elf flesh visible. Last, hit the Calthan Brown with a liiiiitle black (or a darker brown, or gray, whatever, doesn't matter) and tap out the shadowed portions.

Tidy up the lines if necessary and then hit it with a wash - instant downtown for the shading and it mellows out the leather-look, which is nice. Takes like two minutes. (I am sure there are more in depth, intricate ways of doing this, but a better "Time to Result Ratio", I have yet to find.

As for Bone, I am a dirty filthy cheater. You definitely want advice from someone else on that one. Hah!

I really shouldn't be modelling with finals and AP exams (AP Psych and AP Calc :/) next week but I needed some stress relief... I am revamping a project from a while back, my FW Mk3 marines :) they now have bad ass miniguns which can either be heavy bolters if they are devastators or special sternguard weapons :P

(Im really happy with the bullpup bolter ;))

(clever head swapping)

It should be noted that the above guys will have the same off black color as Ryoto and better effects once they are stripped.

Also with regards to the CM

Well now I have entered myself in a local GW's fine cast painting competition, I need to get my entry in by june 26th. I chose the beautiful sternguard sergeant to paint. I will be using the above method I used on my test marine to do the black parts of his armor but I need a recipe for a dark red that doesn't go all the way up to blood red.

here is the first WIP, just a krylon black spray coat and hand painted chaos black.

Here are some pics, its a bit late so they are kind of dark, I am using a more unconventional metallics method, using lots of glazes of reds aand browns to kind of warm up the cold metals. I am unsure if I overdid the white highlights this time and does anyone have suggestions on how to make the PF glow?

First, that Chapter Master is freakin' sweet! Second, I definitely like the finished look on your Sternguard. Not only is it my favorite model but man you did an awesome job on him. From what I can see it seems as though you've really improved your painting skills since you first started this thread. Keep up it up brother.

It looks like your improving a lot. Glad to see it. I remember some of your early posts.

My recommendation if your experimenting with black would be to try over a black basecoat, using a mix of 50% Chaos Black and 50% Scorched Brown, using Bleached Bone as your highlight colour. Gray's also work well for the highlights in that mix.

For leather I always basecoat Scorched Brown and begin highlighting with Bestial Brown and then adding Bleached Bone or a similar colour to edge to straps, finally I was with scorched brown or devilen mud.

The eye effect looks good for a starting point. I would continue to practice it and eventually you'll get the hang of it.

I'd recommend watering down your paint when doing your skin as it still looks a tad bit thick. But coming along nicely!

thanks for the tips, I will most definitely try the black recipe, also any thoughts on what color the wreath and bolter strap should be?

I love your technique, I think it's turning out very nicely!

However, I would like to ask, where is your chapter master model from? He looks gorgeous, is he custom made or is it available for purchase?

Keep up the good work, and good luck for the exams B)

Hey guys hes about done, though I may need to do more work on his base, is it a good compliment to the model or is it just boring? Should I add blood to the base?

Well to me it kind of feels like it lacks depth. Namely because the colours are so similar. The silver and black really.

As for the glow on the fist, it needs to be closer to pure white at the source, same with the eyes.

Keep up the practice!

Oh and one last thing. I don't like the mix of blue, red, and green. I'd pick either green or blue and stick with it :P

Thank you for your support MCA :),did you mean the silver and black lack depth or the base? Oddly enough I did glaze pure white on the eyes and fist, maybe another glaze is needed. I get what you mean by the combo, I just didnt know what to do with the wreath would have been boring in metallics.
