Newly Painted EC

Just need to touch up the base and add the champion's name to the pack relic. Since I haven't come up with a name yet, it'll have to wait.

Edit 18MAR2011: Images embedded in post.

(Ugh ... after looking at these photos blown up, I see all kinds of icky crap I didn't see while painting.)

Edit 17MAR2011: I just realized how chalky that bolt pistol looks. Bleah. I'll fix it.

Odd choice of heads for the base though...got something against the Sisters?

Nah. I love Sisters. They were the last army I painted ... when they first came out. The head on the base has to do with my crusade fluff. My crusade is purging an infested forge world blah-blah-blah after the Imperial Guard, Sororitas, and Ultramarines all attempted and failed blah-blah-blah. The Templar arrived just as the Ultramarines were ready to sterilize the planet from orbit. Thus, the IG, Sisters, and Ultramarine bits on my bases in addition to some chaos infestation bits such as chaos SM heads, the odd tentacle, and a few nasty beasties.

... as said by the others a tad to cluttered.

Yep. He's cluttered. I wish I still had my old Inquisitor Lord. He was even more cluttered. Much more so. I'm a bit of a clutter junkie. I keep thinking, "Huh -- that thought was cool. I'll add that. Oh. And that. And that, and that, and that, but I'm going to need a bigger base ... wait, I'll add a humongous cloak so I can add more servitor skulls and honors and an icon and ..."

It's a wonder I ever finish anything.

Now that is an Emperors Champion, can we got more pics and some close ups of that sword

Ugh. Added more pics and a closeup. Looks messy blown up, though. Ah, well. I didn't use a flash, btw -- the sword is just kinda bright, so it's difficult to see much detail.

I love the conversion you done here. However I must say the mini is a little to busy for my taste. Also I'm quite picky when people do OSL. In my eyes OSL needs to be done right, or else it looks odd. Even though I must say you did quite a good job, I don't like it here.

Other then that the painting is again, as with your other mini's, superb!

May I ask how you get the very nice flat black finish

=][=

I prime with GW Chaos Black and cover it with Gharadon Granite (Citadel Foundation). When the granite is dry, I use a light wash of Badab Black followed by another wash of Devlan Mud. That's the base. Then I highlight it in a sort of stripey pattern with purples, blues, greys, and browns. I'm not sure why it looks flatter than what you're getting, though. Could it be the primer you're using or the distance at which you hold the primer when spraying? Are you getting a slightly rough or pebbled appearance to your primer coat? I used to get that with Armory primer, but I was probably just holding the can too far away.

Edit 21MAR2011: I just noticed you said you get a shiny car-finish effect, so ignore everything I said about pebbling. It may just be the primer brand you use.

Anyway, I finally added the OSL, but I'm still working on a good method. I think Dannis is right about my OSL -- it always looks a bit off -- I just can't figure out what it is I'm doing/not doing. If I ever do, I'll go back and touch up the EC.

Anyone have any good tips on OSL?

p.s. Caveat Emptor -- GW Chaos Black primer seems to be prone to blooming. On my Land Raider, a weird white bloom appeared in recesses a couple of days after I primed the model. I was able to scrub it away, but it came back. I finally just painted over it and that worked -- I'm not sure why it happens. Anyone else have this experience? For such overpriced primer, it shouldn't do that. I picked up 6 cans for $20, though, so I'm determined to keep using it until it's gone. But then ... maybe there's a reason the guy I bought it from was trying to get rid of it. Fake, maybe? Maybe if I peel back the label I'll find a Dollar Store "Primz-Guud!" label hidden below ...

For one thing, my highlights are too chalky with the red (and with the blue, in some places). As far as the sword-source, I think the light reflection should be paler ... not quite so blue -- but closer to white. You think? Sometimes I seem to hit the OSL ok (but never perfectly), but other times, I miss.

Since I don't really know the technique, I usually just eyeball it until I think it looks ok. The problem with that is that I often go back to the model weeks later and want to place it in my vise and slowly crank it until I'm left with a metal and plastic pancake.

I'll keep looking at web advice and maybe I can pick up a good technique. I honestly appreciate the criticism, so keep it coming!

The chalkiness can be restored by spending a little more time on the blending.

However I find that allot of people make the same mistakes as that were explained in the 3 part article I gave you a link in my previous post. Allot of people either don't keep the radius of light that come from the object constant, or they don't keep the light constant (brighter spots on place where it should be darker).

Anyways, good luck on the practicing though!

Man, that is really nice! It may be a bit cluttered, but I like it...I think it really adds to the "importance" of the model. He will be focussed on quite a bit, but that's what the EC wants...to wade through endless body parts in order to get at the enemy's baddest dude and lop his head off. Nicely done!
