Need Some Advice from my Wolf Brothers

I don't disagree. I'm interested in expanding my ability quite a bit this summer. GS work is one of the things I'm planning on experimenting with.

I'm still trying to finish my grey hunter test model. I should be able to get it done tomorrow and I'll post pics.

Thanks for the comments.

You can see my own Space Wolves by these links. As said I use Adeptus Battle Grey as my main colour, Badab Black wash, highlight with Codex Grey & then fine highlight of fotress on the edge of the armour plates, etc....

So far doing pretty well in the tournament scene with the force ;)

Has anyone posted a tutorial for something like this? I've looked at DV8's stuff (which is great) but it's a bit beyond me at the moment.

DV8 has photos of how he painted his own Space Wolves with writen comment under each photo. I personial do not do them because I paint that fast & it slow down the painting side for me. Just as soon as I start to paint I do not stop (40 zombies in 30 mins before the spray gun was release, Blood Angels force in a week & a half, my Wolf Wing which where posted took me a week & a half). But as said that just from my own views & why I do not do them.

Honestly hair and beards are pretty easy with green stuff. Anybody with a love of heavy metal and bad viking movies already has enough backround material. Just lay it on in small rolls in the general direction and cut the rolls in half until you get the look you're after. (ala Rob Zombie).
I'm probably in the minority of NOT associating Space Wolves with heavy metal... :whistling:

^ Only mass media product that comes to mind when I think of Space Wolves is '13th Warrior' for everyday behavior and any scene where the berserker character is being "educated" by his father in 'Erik the Viking' for everything else.

Ok. So I finished my test mini and would love to hear comments, etc. Be nice, now! I know the painting isn't ideal. I need new brushes, new paints, and some work on my technique. I'm not unhappy with the coloring, but I'm going to work some on my ability to blend colors better. Maybe glazing, maybe the airbrush. Maybe both :P . Anyway, I know that I'll have to hand paint minis that I bring forward from my 2nd edition stash, but I may want to airbrush some, following DV8's tutorials.

So, here they are:

The grey vs. the blue. Which is better? Is it worth converting the force over, or should I start from scratch if I decide to go with the grey.

from this picture... I like the look of the grey. It brings out the red, black and brown nicely compared to the blue. I'd stay away from gloss, imo I like and prefer the matte look on minis after their done, the shiny models can only look nice on certain pieces or armies. but for me, shiny models look more like display pieces than game pieces. plus i like it dull and gritty, it is war after-all. "look at that shiny marine, so pretty! shoot it!"

I don't disagree. This was a "matte" finish, but it sure doesn't look it to me. I always used the heavier Krylon sprays for coating, but they seem to have gotten glossier in the past 15 years, lol.

I'll have to search for clear coats too, I guess.

I like the grey one better as well, one thign thats different in a good way from 2nd ed is the grittier, darker look to the paintschemes - battle damage included.

Having said that, i really like the look of your blue marine as well, and in need of new brushes you say?

The bases match the warboard that we've been using for the past 20 years or so. I'm planning on rebasing the models as well. Something a little grittier. I'm not sure what yet, as I still want it to look at home on different boards.

I think I like your grey scheme more.. if only because it's also a newer sculpt. I can't decide if the older model sculpts would work as well with the grey scheme.. especially if they're not getting painted from scratch.

All in all, new batch = grey, imo.

I also agree with Mav in regard to the red.. looks like your older model has blood angels red highlighting while the newer one only went as light as blood red.

The older models wasn't painted with GW paints, either. I think I used Partha's paints back then. Actually (don't laugh at my age) I'm pretty sure that a lot of my paints were D&D paints. These were just partha paint pots marked with Dungeons and Dragons instead of Ral Partha.

The red was a lot more orange back then. I also like the deeper red better.

I think I'm going to repaint what I need from the old, and keep everything grey from here on out. I'll keep a few squads the old blue just as display. Probably the hunter squad that this blue marine came from and the old dreads. I'll likely pick up the forgeworld dread and make my Bjorn or Ven Dread from that.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Ok. So I've decided to retrofit some of my minis to the new grey. I'll keep one squad of hunter the old paint scheme just as an homage to the old edition.

I'll make my first squad out of these guys:

I've added the old GH sarge with a power weapon and the old BC sarge with a powerfist. I'll alternate those two depending on what I want. I've also added a Wulfen model and another as a WG Champion. I've given him a combi as I'll likely want that to replace the melta I lose for having him.

I've also ripped the Power Fist off my Wolf Priest with a jump pack. I took his Jump Pack too ;)

No real reason to have a sword with a PF anymore. <_<

I'll paint a new Rune Priest at the same time. No real reason for him to have a plasma pistol with all those cool shooty powers either.

Njal will need a new paint job to match.

Sigh, lots to do.

Hi

I've also had to retro fit my Space Wolves. The same green flock on the bases and I used humbrol paints as we didn't have easy access to GW paints in the 90's down here in South Africa. I didn't go as far as a full repaint but it's amazing what a couple of new weapons on the old metal models makes. Also a simple thing like painting the chainswords black instead of the yellow and red bling that was sooo Cooool back in the day. Luckily my blue/ grey colour scheme is closer to grey than powder blue but it's all about toning down the bling on the 2nd ed.
