Honda
Pretty surprised you did these guys in red, I thought you might have been going down the gold route for the Custodes. Oops! I probably didn't explain what I was doing very well. My Custodes will definitely be gold, I'm just using the red primer (it's actually a reddish brown) + brown wash for the foundation of the gold. What the foundation should do is give the gold (Reaper Antique Gold) a warm, dark appearance once I get it where I want. I'm not sure how many layers I'm going to need as I've never worked with this color before...it just looked interesting and it was on sale in a shop I was visiting. I plan on testing it on some strips first to make sure it does what I think it will do. In the meantime, I've been blocking out the colors of the robes (more browns, Scorched/Bestial) as they will get touched up before the final red treatment. So don't worry, you won't be seeing any red Custodes from me. ;) Cheers, Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/225182-project-custodes-pre-heresyheresy-era/page/3/#findComment-2954115 Share on other sites

My Adeptus Custodes armour was done very quickly and it looks pretty good but it all depends on how you want your guys to look in the long run. I've been trying to get my reds right for sometime but trying to make it look good in pictures is tough. I'm looking forward to seeing more progress on your army but it will take time. I'm also looking into working on a website to do maybe get more commission work once I've finished my friends Raven Guard and also my own army. Honda
Ok, this is a quick hit so that VAGABOND can go into the new year in the right frame of mind. I spent a fair bit of today working up my gold. Originally, I was going to work with that Reaper gold, but it's finish was unacceptable. So now I'm thinking, "Now what?". I found an old bottle (like bolter bottle old) and spent time reconstituting it with water. Then it got too thin...yes, I was definitely working on keeping my patience...quite unintentionally I assure you. So then I got the idea...hey, I've got this Reaper stuff just laying around, so I added some of that and we were off to the races. Well, really, I tested one figure because it's easier to strip one than fifteen. But it still wasn't quite there, so I ran off to GW, got a new pot of Shining Gold, and a thin wash of Flesh Wash later, I am now at this stage. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9399.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9397.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9396.jpg I am at a point now where I am comfortable with how this is going to work out and can proceed with the rest of the figures. I am striving for the gold as seen in Adrian Smith's pictures of Custodes in "Collected Visions". So it's a very warm, bold gold. This is closer to where I want to be, it still has a way to go. Happy New Year everyone! Alpha PTP
I personally don't care for that gold. I think it needs a heavy wash of Devlan Mud, then highlight it back up to either Burnished Gold or Mithril Silver if you want heavy contrast. It looks flat and boring right now. I understand that this is PIP as well. VAGABOND
I actually really like it, but i'll echo what Alpha said regarding a wash of Sepia or talent in a tub... Senior Devlan Mud! My Sanguinary Guard army was done with Mud wash but I took a different approach with my Custodes and they look far better with a Sepia wash but it depends on how you want them look Honda. Dark Apostle Thirst
It's mildly realistic, but the unattractive side of realism :P Still, good to see paint on these guys at all, keep modelling Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/225182-project-custodes-pre-heresyheresy-era/page/3/#findComment-2954950 Share on other sites
Honda
I hear what you are all saying, since I was typing rather quickly last night, let me clarify... 1. When I said, this is where I want to be, I meant from a "starting" point for highlighting and adding depth. I haven't begun that work yet. 2. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there were no GW washes. People still painted metallics and they turned out quite nice. I even visited that galaxy a couple of times. ^_^ What that means is that although there are new tools in the tool box (i.e. washes), there are other techniques for working metallics. I intend to use both. So, I hear your concerns and acknowledge them. My bad for not clarifying that this stage is still work in progress. I'll get there. Note: for documentation purposes, the "old" bolter bottle that I discovered was GW Shining Gold. I left out that reference. I hope everyone has a great New Years Eve. VAGABOND
Yeah it's a good starting point please don't think I was having a go or anything mate! If I'm honest your army gave me a little inspiration on me starting my Custodians. I look forward to visiting it sometime...on my way through Nottingham for a quick stop of FW. :D And no worries on the comments, I thought I'd just save you some "what is that idiot up to now?" thoughts, lol...and if the truth be told, you starting on your army got me to get off of my backside and start making progress on mine. Honda
Ok, quick update. I've been working on the gold coverage which I'm pretty happy with. I am now looking at how deep the recess work will be before coming back again with highlights. Right now, I have put two layers of Shining Gold (one solid, one highlights), then a thin wash of Flesh Wash (1:6 FW to H20), then Gryphonne Sepia in the recesses. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9402.jpg GW's Shining Gold is a fantastic color. Next I am working straight Flesh Wash into the recesses. This first image shows where the rest of the army is vs. the in progress fig. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9404.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9411.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9412.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9414.jpg My camera work isn't of the highest quality, so it is a little difficult to see how dark the newer figure is with all the shading. He is dark though, so will need some lightning. Onwards! Honda
That's a very ruddy gold I am concerned about how dark everything has gotten in this most recent step...which is why I'm only working on one guy until I get comfortable with the entire process. So you are correct, it is dark, but I will bring it back into the light. Thanx for you feedback. Honda
When we last saw our intrepid hero, he was busy walking on the wild side with predictably unpredictable results...sigh http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9417.jpg Yeah, thrilling. So this morning (probably the last day of sick leave), I attempted to fix things and ended up with this... http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9462.jpg Which is not bad, I can work with that. The other was just too far off from where the rest of the army is, but now that I'm back on track, I can get this show back on the road. Then I'll move back to the infantry and see if I can get them completed before to long. Also, this thread lay fallow as I was working on my LPC vow, which I completed. Thread here... http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...t&p=2961023 As was pointed out by MeatGrinder, I will spend just a little more time giving some attention to the turbine blades and the interior of the engines. Then....once this block of work is done, I have a very interesting twist coming for the army. I'm actually quite excited by the possibilities. ;) Cheers, Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/225182-project-custodes-pre-heresyheresy-era/page/3/#findComment-2981130 Share on other sites

Honda
Gah, stupid Custodes. Dude, you like seriously mispelled "awesome". lol Nah, seriously, great work and an inspired idea- I wish I had used the GK codex for Custodes. What from the codex are you using for SW/Sisters of Silence? 1. Rumor has it that the codex is still out there. 2. Sisters of Silence: I had a couple of ideas. The first (fluffy) was to use them as Culexus assassins, sprinkled around with the Purifiers and Custodes. Probably not "tourney tough", but considering all the psykers they are standing around, could be amusing. The other was to make them Purifiers "counts as", following on the great idea and awesome modeling from Capt. Engelhart. However, I like the fluffy idea better so am planning on going that route. The upside to that is that I'd only have to model a few of them. Yo, VAGABOND! Relic Contemptors. Awesomeness rating on your army just went up ten notches and you were already at 10.3 out of 10. I am very interested in seeing them in the near future. Ooh, a mention in a video eh? I will definitely check it out. I'd like to tell my fan where it is so you can get at least two more views. Cheers and I should have a posting up in the next couple of days. Physical therapy has kicked in and a lot of my modeling time has been taken up with whimpering like a little girl in front of a very pleasant specialist. I appreciate the C&C! Oh yeah it just seemed right but to include them in my army, I think these will be the last things to add to my Custdians. Alot of blood, sweat and tears have went into them and I'm aiming for Best Painted in the next 2 tournaments. Here's the link dude Hope you feel better soon man so you can get your army finished and aslong as your not sobbing like a girl infront of a hot nurse then you should be alright. :P Take it easy dude ^_^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/225182-project-custodes-pre-heresyheresy-era/page/3/#findComment-2991133 Share on other sites
Honda
<Rip Van Honda, stretches, yawns, and rubs his eyes> Ok, I wasn't really sleeping, but it sure has been awhile since the last post (theoretically, only a couple of days ago... ^_^ ). In the mean time, I've been working on the LR for the Custodes, trying to come up some decent banner ideas and then, like pull the whole thing off. As a reminder, this is where the whole reclamation thing kicked off. So from this...<blech> http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9317.jpg ...to this...<gag> http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9417.jpg ...to something better like this...<hmmm> http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9462.jpg ...and now this... As a project goes, I think it turned out Ok. I'm not sure that I would have done the two red top hatches again, but at the time I was looking for a way to break up the gold a little bit and I think I may have gone a little too far. And this is what it means to be "Space Marine" tough. This guy dropped from a shelf that's seven feet up and landed on the floor after a nose dive. I was just a tad surprised that this was all the damage that it suffered. [Kids, don't do this at home] Anyway, it went back together just fine and the Chapterhouse extension did quite well, though I do think the GS reinforcement work on the seams certainly didn't hurt. So, except for my Contemptor, all the vehicles are done and it's time to knock out some "guys"...and a gal or two (Sisters of Silence). The only snag is if negotiations on a commission work out and then I shall be doing something completely different, but thankfully, it will be board appropriate, so keep your eyes peeled. C&C greatly appreciated! Behir
I have always had the impression, that Custodes are lean and even taller than Astartes. But I had the same "Whoa, Custodes!" thought when I saw these miniatures on Scibor's site. Your approuch to the army is truly brilliant, and I hope that it's going to develop into a vast, formidable force :). Honda
I was feeling a bit under the weather today, so I stayed home. Eventually I found myself sitting in front of my desk. [sick person] + [weird bits] = Something scary So to help you (or perhaps frighten you), understand how this all came about, I sort of have to play it out to you as it came together in my head. The pictures below are more storyboards to get to the end point, so bear with me. Let us proceed, shall we? And a couple of others showing the different sides Now, this isn't something new, others have done conversions along these lines, however I wanted to try and put some elements together that don't make sense, yet somehow fit. So if you look at [her], she doesn't really have a body, just the inference of something there. How does she float? I've no idea. Still I like how the cloak covering the majority of her bulk hides the gruesome bits, but still let's your imagination fill in the gaps. Anyway, I was happy with how she turned out. I will most likely use her as either an Eversor assassin or a Callidus. Part of my Inquisitorial forces features three assassins, who are sisters and through the machinations of the Inquisition have become something to dread. Also, I did start looking at my Custodes again and will endeavor to resume with the infantry. C&C greatly appreciated!
