alfred_the_great
So, in my continuing fluff quest: what precisely happens when a Wolf Lord gets the hump and takes his Great Company out of the Fang and into their own little "crusade"? Does the Great Wolf allow him to take the whole kit and caboddle from the Fang, and then the SW have to take a couple of centuries to re-recruit and replace the 120(ish) men that have just left? Or is it a "shameful" thing, with the Wolf Lord and his packs slinking out of the back door with all they can carry? I'm presuming there's no canonical fluff on this, so I'm interested in people's thoughts. cheers y'all.... lothbrok
as far as i can tell it varies depending on the sitiuation. if one wolflord were to stand up and say something along the lines "oh glorious brothers of the wolf, i shalt depart from our illustrious home to battle the forces of evil, save me a beer." then grimnar would be quite pleased. but if one said "grimnar i'm less then pleased with your leadership i'm leaving" then he would be a bit miffed. but either way their taking their stuff after all all gear is the direct propeirty of the wolflord. clanfield
there was referance to companys deployment taking them too far from the fang and them electing to remain in there operational area as well. i beleve that the oath each new lord takes is to russ and the empoer not the great wolf which alows for this Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/225218-great-companies-leaving/#findComment-2695299 Share on other sites
Adarul Greystalker
The 5th edition codex mentions that even just saying that a company "walks to the 13th stone" is taken very seriously. No doubt the act itself is considered much more grave. The wolf lords definitely owe loyalty to the chapter and the Great Wolf and to walk away from that is no doubt seen as something of a betrayal, except probably in extreme cases where a company becomes isolated from Fenris for a significant time (which could easily happen, as we know). morehardcore
yes a wolf lord is loyal to the chapter but it is ultimately his decision what he wants to do with his forces. because of this i think that a wolf lord could easily walk out of the fang one day with his forces and never return. the walks to the 13th stone comment has more to do with the accusation of heresy and such then anything else. the actaul 13th company serves are very honorable role and is not corrupted at all. Valerian
there was referance to companys deployment taking them too far from the fang and them electing to remain in there operational area as well.i beleve that the oath each new lord takes is to russ and the empoer not the great wolf which alows for this That was Jotun Bearclaw's GC, which stayed out on the Eastern Fringe to fight Tyranids, rather than return to Fenris. You are correct, although they'll be loyal to their Chapter and the Great Wolf, certainly, their oaths are to Russ and the Allfather. Like Russ himself, each independent-minded Wolf Lord will determine for themselves how to best serve and meet those obligations. If it conflicts with what the Great Wolf prefers, then so be it.
