1Drop
I'm still used to 2nd edition (well what I can remember anyway) I'm getting a rulebook (the nice big hardback one) on Monday and gonna read it over and over as well as the BA codex.. I'm not planning on playing seriously till next year simply for the reason that I want to learn the game inside out and develop my tactics to within an inch of perfect before I play for real.. Again sorry for going off the topic a bit (I'm a repeat offender)

You wont develop your tactics by being an armchair/textbook general. The internet and cookie-cutter lists are no substitute for getting out and hitting the tabletops... You could spend 8 months developing tactics, then find that your personality and/or temperament is unsuited to those tactics, and find you've bought the wrong models, learnt the wrong tactics and dont enjoy the game so much cos you're only ever doing waht you've been told works, not discovered anything yourself. An example, one of the guys I play against absolutely cannot get his head round bait squads, nor can he accept that sometimes, you have to abandon a squad in a bad situation and deal with the rest of the enemy army. He gets agravated when he loses marines, and if one of his squads is threatened with a charge, they almsot always shoot at the unit directly threatening them, rather than the unit they should shoot. He knows, intellectually, waht he's doing wrong, but emotionally cannot stop himself during games. I've almost lost the will to wipe him out any more - its getting like kicking the proverbial puppy. Gonna have to disagree a bit with you here as I myself jumped from 2nd ed to 4th. It's really a completely different game now and if he dosen't understand how things actually work in the new system he won't be able to understand which models are good or how to use them on the tabletop. Leonaides is dead on... you've simply just got to play games. You can learn some 'tricks' on the internet and build some lists that have the strategy built-in but there is no substitute for experience. That bait squad example is really quite funny and so so true. I would say most people in general do not understand complete army synergy, where one units sole (or primary) purpose might be to die or serve other units by providing cover, or drawing fire, or herding enemy units etc - which is exactly why the internet says that Tyranids are no good, which is entirely untrue - they are just not point and click, like some of these net-lists appear to be. Well as far as learning the game goes - who cares what models are good. There is no better way to find out and learn then playing games. Use proxies! :(
