Shiny primer? What the...?

We had a spike in warm weather last week so I grabbed my trusty black primer and took a rack of CSM outside to prime them... when I came back the next day my models were VERY shiny, almost like they'd been hit with a high-gloss lacquer or something. This is odd, since all my other spray-primed models had a nice flat surface. And this shiny stuff is almost impossible to get paint onto.

Is it possible for primer to, I don't know, go bad? Or did I just grab the wrong can of spray paint?

If the latter, can someone recommend to me a decent black primer (that isn't the ridiculously-priced $15 GW) that will go on flat? I haven't bought any in a long time. Or a flat red primer, if such a thing exists, for my coming World Eaters?

ive had this happen with gw's chaos black spray.. recently ive found their sprays to be getting worse and worse and have switched to using halfords grey primer then airbrushing a fine coat of vmc black onto anything i want black.. ive also seen chaos black paint have an almost oily property to it in the past where no other paint has and have stopped using it in favour of vmc black..

and always remember, gw's chaos black spray isnt primer.

I'd recommend checking out the army painter for coloured primers like red and the like. (I can personally vouch for Pure Red)

As for basic undercoating, I've taken to using Hycote Grey Primer (purchased from a well known auction site, but as it's an Automotive primer then hardware/auto stores will probably caarry it) after seeing the results that Dezart Fox achieved using it. In citadel colour terms, it's around about Codex Grey coloured (perhaps slightly darker). Goes on much easier and more consistently than GW's 'primers'.

Both of the above are acylic primers and are perfectly compatible with acylic paints.

Hope this helps

For black, white, or grey primer and a very good matt varnish too (better than APs): http://www.thewarstore.com/armoryspraypaints.html

For a dark red primer: http://www.thewarstore.com/product52845.html

I don't know, maybe you grabbed the wrong can, if you think that is possible. But there are better alternatives.
