Working on a website

Recommended Posts

so I've got a team working on a scene involving an Eldar an a Hormagaunt but I can't get the Hormagaunt to roll over the right...

Just kidding. It's not that kind of a website. I'm designing a 40k website. I'm not going to go into the hows of it going to work, but I am looking for feed back on how the website is going to be laid out. SO I'm working on creating mock ups with explanations of how it's going to work. So I've got the mock up for the main page built. I've gone through and written explanations for how I want each part to work. What do you guys think?

this is the main page itself:

The header bar of the website will remain consistent across the entirety of the website. The title of the website will be rendered in white text, in a sans-serif font. I would like to explore the possibility of the title having a black outline. If this is not viable, then we can look at rendering the title as a graphic.

The sub-heading will be rendered in the same font as the website.

The sections links (“HOME” “ABOUT” “MEMBERS” “GALLERIES” “TUTORIALS” “DOWNLOADS” “CONTACT”) will all be rendered in the same font as the title. This will help to ensure a consistent impression.

The social media icons to the right will all be active links. The RSS feed icon will launch the users chosen feed reader (Thunderbird, Live Bookmarks, BlogLinks, ect)

So that's the break down of the main page. What do you think? What do you think would work better? Do the colors work alright? Anything really.

The larger banner image (The one showing Lylith) will actually be a series of images linked to 3-5 "Featured" articles. The banners will automatically rotate every 7 seconds to the next in series. So banner 1 will be displayed for 7 seconds, then banner 2 will slide in from the right side. Once banner 2 is in place for 7 seconds, it will then be replaced by banner 3 and so on and so forth. The user can interrupt the auto-scrolling anytime they wish by clicking on the right arrow or left arrow to advance to the next banner or the previous banner. Each banner will be linked to the respective story. The text displayed over the banner will contain the first 2-3 sentences of the story it links to. So posts that will be featured will require 2 things:

1) Image. This image will need to be resized to the appropriate size from within WordPress. Would be nice if this could be handled inside of the posting system versus having to have to have the images pre-processed.

2) Excerpt: the first couple sentences of the article. This will be limited by character count (300 characters).

The headlines section will show 4 headlines. Like the featured section, each of the headline articles displayed will contain an image that is connected to the article and an excerpt from the article itself. Displayed on a dark bar, a partial transparency png, will be the date of the post. Displayed in Month/Date format, the far right side of the bar will contain the comments indicator. If the little chat balloon is white, there are comments on that article. If it is gray, there are no comments on that article. The quality of being a headline article will be controlled via the selection of the “Headline” category.

When the user hovers over the head line article, the div background color will turn to a darker grey color. This is displayed in the example image above in the second segment from the left. Like the featured articles, each of the headline articles will require 2 things form the poster:

1) Image. This image will need to be resized to the appropriate size from within WordPress. Would be nice if this could be handled inside of the posting system versus having to have to have the images pre-processed.

2) Excerpt: the first couple sentences of the article. This will be limited by character count.

The recent headlines section will list the most recent 5 articles, after the 4 most recent “headline” articles. So if the headline articles are articles 10, 9, 8, and 7, the recent headlines section will list articles 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 with article 1 being accessible via the archives section. Each article div will contain 4 parts:

1) Author’s Profile image. This will be displayed as a thumbnail on the left side of the div.

2) Article Title

3) Authors name/handle

4) Date the article was published.

Like the headline article section, when you hover over the article, the background color of the div will change to a dark grey color.

The final section is the archives. While the majority of the space in this section will be taken up by banner links to sponsoring sites, the primary point of this section will be the archive menu drop down listing which will be divided by month. The user will be able to make a multi-month selection. When the user has completed the selection, they can click the “list selection” button and that will open a new window that lists all the posts made in those selections.

Addition: Include a ‘help’ icon below the archives listing box, to the left of the ‘list selection’ button. When the user hovers over this icon, a window will appear explaining how to make multiple selections and how to utilize the archives feature.

I think the only thing I could say to change would be to go for a greyish metal plate background for the text. White with black letters can be blinding. Other then that it looks awesome!

Mr.Malevolent

That is a grey. unless you're talking about doing a textured metal effect, which as a back ground for text is a horrid idea. I made a comparison square comparing the grey I used in the mock up to white.
