Nassi
I didnt have much luck with the search function, but i can almost guarantee this has been asked before. I recently found some old metal models, and figured with a bit of TLC they'd make nice additions to my current list; however, im not sure whats the best way to remove the thick layer of paint smeeared over them =( Any of your advice and tried + trusted methods would be greatly appreciated Nassi Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/225557-removing-paint/ Share on other sites
Tanhausen
If they are metal, any normal solvent (acetone or turpentine). If plastic, normal or even isopropyl alcohol. People also use (and here goes the list) Purple Power, Dot 3 brake fluid, Simple Green, oven cleaners and I'm sure I miss more thing... I use the two above. crazychib
Dettol or Mr Muscle Kitchen cleaner. Both work well on metal and/or plastic minis. Just soak for about 24hrs then rinse with water and scrub with an old toothbrush. KJB
I've been using Dettol - leave to soak for an hour or 2 and then scrub with an old toothbrush, the paint comes straight off - I've tried it on metal, plastic and Forge World resin parts and have had no issues (bar the headaches from not opening the window...) AngryJohnny
Here's a link to the Paint Stripping FAQ in the tutorials section. Personally I use Easy Off Oven cleaner. It works great for both plastic and metal miniatures with absolutely no damage to the plastics or metals. I haven't found a paint or primer it wont remove yet. BTW - Doesn't harm my FW Resin either. Dorns Padawan
Acetone free nail polish remover. Leave models (plastic or metal) to soak for approx 45-60 seconds then scrub them with an old tooth brush. Works really really well. Olis
Btw, B&Cers, when you use Dettol to strip models have a little Dettol set to one side to dip the mini in so you can swill paint clumps off (this is after the overnight soak, of course). IF YOU USE WATER THE PAINT CLUMPS WILL STICK TO THE MINI!! Once free from the Dettol dip THEN you can use water. And wear marigolds or something similar while you do this - neat Dettol is not skin friendly (it's no real biggie if you get some on your skin, just wash it off). If you disregard hand protection - don't say I didn't warn you. :P Recap: 1) Dettol soak the minis overnight 2) Scrub with an old brush (toothbrushes are good for this but they don't have a long shelf life due to clogs) 3) Dip the scrubee in a Dettol bath and wash off excess clumpage 4) Wash under a tap to get rid of excess Dettol That's it (I think). Given the amount of times I mentioned Dettol I reckon they should be paying me for this... Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/225557-removing-paint/#findComment-2700676 Share on other sites

Emperors Immortals
Dettol, but i swear by Methylated spirits - wont damage plastic or metal (ive scrubbed about 3000 pts worth so far) but it will turn resin in to water.
