overloading your hunters

So as most of you know, I'm in the process of refitting my 2nd edition force to fit this edition. My plan is to have a competitive force this fall for many of the tourneys that are nearby.

I was reading the codex again, and I came up with a thought on hunters. Do you give everything to just one hunter? If you take a wolf totem, and power fist and a melta gun, for example. Would it all go on one guy?

This seems the best way to insure you're not making difficult decisions during wound allocation.

Thoughts?

Except its also a great way to just lose all of those things at once.

I always give them to separate guys, with the occasional Totem going on the guy with the SCCW.

Why? Because Id rather be able to make the hard choices than to have no choices at all. Im the general, thats what Im on the field for.

There's pros and cons for both. It really depends on what you experience happens most - that you take lots of small number of hits where you can allocate wounds to the rank and file (as far as such things go with wolves), or whether you tend to get a wound or two on each model.

As long as the pack is large, having all things on one guy is good. As soon as the pack gets smaller, though, having everything on one guy is bad because you stand to lose everying to one armour save.

If you have 3 guys with equipment, and they all take a wound, you'll only lose 1 out of those 3 things. If you have all on one guy, you have a 1 in 3 chance of losing it all.

I always put them on different models because what tends to happen is I take a lot of hits (my opponents concentrate fire on one squad til its down) so I don't risk it all to one armour save.

I don't disagree with you Maverick. I'm looking to build 12 - 13 member GH squads that provide me with options, so I'll always have a few extra that stay in the box.

So if I take 10 wounds, I have to give one to each guy in the squad. So I'll have to roll one time for my guy with 3 items, and 9 times for everyone else. Is that correct?

So it becomes a problem only when I take enough wounds that I have to allocate to everyone. Hmm. That's an interesting choice. All your eggs in very few baskets, or more potential saves but losing less with each failure.

10 hunters:

1 with PF, melta gun and wolf totem

1 with mark of wulfen and melta gun

8 with regular equipment.

It could be fun. Until you take more than 8 wounds. Or until your opponet has you down to 5 models and give you five wounds to save.

There's pros and cons for both.

Yeah. I try for a little bit of both worlds and give the Meltagun and Wolf Standard to the same guy, while the powerweapon and MoTW go to individuals. It's always worked well for me, especially since the Wolf Standard is a single-use item, so by the time the squad gets thinned down he's already lost it.

especially with every grey knight player and there mom putting a vindacar in there list they will LOVE to see all your stuff on one guy. its always better to spread your gear around for allocation purposes thats why wolf guard, nobs and other things where you can make each guy different is a pain to deal with.
