Daemonhunters codex - obsolete?

Hi,

This is probably an obvious question but is there actually an official ruling somewhere that now states Daemonhunters codex cannot be used any more? or a list of current legal armies?

Its just that the new codex is named slightly differently, just wondering :D

Ah so the definitive list of legal armies is based on the games workshop website 40k 'armies' list - not the big rulebook or FAQ's?

Also i don't recall a Catachan section when there codex was legal,

Although please don't try to take this as me trying to bend any rules to my favour - i just simply do not recognise an official process for retire-ing old codices and hoped there would be one :)

There is no real official way that declares which codexes are legal or not. If you still want to play Codex: Catachans or Codex: Daemonhunters, and your opponent agrees, who's stopping you?

Just don't expect to enter a lot of tournaments with it, as most organizers will view the Daemonhunters codex as obsolete.

Nah its like when the Tau became the Tau Empire and such the Daemonhunter codex is goneburgers eg no longer supported by GW however some tourneys that are soon will still outlaw the GK dex thus resulting in people using the Daemonhunters.

 umm....ok....right.... :)

Redemption is right, it is technically now replaced and the rules state you must use the most current codex to play by, however they are named differently. If GW does something in the FAQ about this, we will just have to see, but Its not really much of an issue. Only reason I would want to use it now is if you wanted to field a non-grey knight army and use no named characters, otherwise it is just out dated.

There is no such "official process". GW has never believed it's been necessary. They think people are smart enough to follow the breadcrumbs they lay down for us and are going to willingly follow along. They have never understood or appreciated the process of writing clear rules.

They never will, either.

So, ultimately, you're going to have to make your peace with GW's shortcomings in this area if you wish to continue playing the game. While it is true that you can play with any rules you and and your opponent agree to -- even GW says this in black and white in the BRB (and repeat it every month in issues of White Dwarf as well) -- you must understand that playing a game is inherently a social contract. All parties involved agree to follow "the rules". And in an ever-changing game like 40K, that really means "the CURRENT rules". The worldwide GW gaming community follows this process closely and all gamers are generally aware of what is new and what becomes outdated. You simply aren't going to be able to force your own social contract on the rest of us if you want to continue playing with Codex: Daemonhunters. We've all moved on right along with GW. You're not going to find traction supporting any move to continue playing with old rules. They're not just "outdated", they're "broken" simply by virtue of not being as adaptable to the current game as the new rules clearly are.

You can't use armies in GW stores which are no longer supported at all, even through direct order. Unless you have express permission

And in tournaments you can only use the Codices which are specified in the rules packs.

So basically, you could turn up to your friends house and play using the Rogue Trader rules vs his 5th Ed Marines if you both wanted to. But don't expect any random person you play in a pick up game or a tournament to allow you to use your allied Inquisitor with 2 Mystics.

ok thank you all for your responses  - i wasn't trying to find a loophole or anything its just my circle of gamers like to have things in black and white... not because they/i cant comprehend the intentions of GW or a vaguely written rule - just for clarity.

Thanks all anyways for the help :)

Darn it - too late?

To answer the question properly; The fluff is not necessarily invalidated (as much as some would like you to believe) but for games outside of friendlies the rules are. If you're a hardcore Grey Knight/Inquisition fan, a loremaster or just like to play mess around with the game once in a while it's worth keeping a hold of.

Have I ever seen number6 make such a strong statement?
