Chapter Logo

I have recently named my DIY chapter the Woe Bringers, and I really like the name. However, I am not sure about the logo. Can some of you help me with some ideas? The logo has to be relatively easily to paint though.

In regards to the general theme of the chapter I think they're kind of vengeful knights. Chivalric yet fierce.

In terms of those images that are most common to the Adeptus Astartes, I see the skull, flames, swords, and axes as being likely candidates. Those symbols work to support both "woe" and the chivalric, yet vengeful, knightly theme you've described.

ECritter has adequately demonstrated an important point.

The Chapter badges of the Adeptus Astartes usually (but not always) draw upon a common pool of imagery. Subtle variations to the basic images through shapes, coloring, size, and placement are one method of individualizing those images. In addition, the combination of those images with other images can individualize those images. In that way, the Crimson Fists and Imperial Fists both use the image of a clenched fist as the basis of their Chapter badges, though the different coloring used by each makes them unique. Likewise with the Chapter badge of the Black Templars, which is similar to that of the Imperial Paladins, the only difference being the coloring of the maltese cross (black for the Black Templars, yellow for the Imperial Paladins).

On the concept of an eye with a tear, however, I don't think that image evokes the right response. My own personal view on Chapter badges is that they say something about the character of the Chapter. The use of an eye with a bloody teardrop implies that the Chapter is sad (to me). The name "Woe Bringers", however, implies that the Chapter is going to make other people sad. So to me, the badge would be better if it signified why or how it was going to make other people sad, or if it was an image of death or destruction.

All that said, my feelings won't be hurt if you don't like the basic idea because you'd prefer something much more distinctive. It's your Chapter after all, so I'd be more than happy to delve into other ideas. If you like the eye with the bloody teardrop, use it. If you want to consider other ideas, I'd be happy to help throw some around so that you can smack them around. B)

How about for a symbol your Chapter has an Aquilla that is made by covering the hands in blood and then pressing them onto the armour. Each Aquilla would be slightly unique to the individual and the idea that the chapters badge of office is made of blood is suitably grim for 40k.

also it would sort of look like the Mercenary Symbol from Fable 3, which was awesome.
