Getting stuck into the eyes

Ok so I'm painting up some DC and I can't help myself but get right onto doing the base red of the eyes right away. I love painting the eyes first but it's weird cos I think it's cos I'm scared of them and I want to do them first and get them perfect so rather than worry about them I get them done right away so I can causually paint the rest of my unit!

Anyway just thought I'd start a topic of on space marine eyes and how people paint them, if they like painting them etc.. Basically anything eye shaped...

Give me your eye stories please..

So yeah I'll start off asking a couple of questions.

BA eye recipe and method?

DC eye recipe and method?

I am pretty lazy with my eyes. If they are actual eyes, skull white, a dab of color, a black spot in the middle. For the Lenes on helmets I do the whole lens chaos black, then coat that fully with dark angel's green, then a layer of snot green that covers about half to two thirds of the dark angel's green. Then hit it with a little dab of goblin green to seal the deal. I do em in batches though so i just hit them each on down the line so this is really easy for the lazy man. really small paint brushes help.

Edit, I probably should have been clear, I paint all of my lenses the same way for coherency across my fource. I did some DC lenses in red at one point, but I prefered to keep the army all the same.

Yeah actually I probably would have liked green eyes on my DC too but I've done the

Blood red with a blazing orange highlight.. I do my normal BA dark angles green with a scorpion green highlight although I'm thinking of doing them dark angles green to snot green to scorpion green with a layer of gloss varnish to make them gleam when I actually start painting some normal BA.

if you use the successive green highlights going towards the front of the lense...

so from back to front, DA Green, Snot Green, Scorpion Green...You will be left with a very dark area at the back of the lens. Put a tiny dab of pure white in this area and will give you the reflective lens/glass gem effect.

That's a good idea with the White dot bro.

Also I just did the eyes on my Chaplin the same as I do for my regular BA and it looks so good against the black, I can imagine it working really well on BA too, hmmm, whether to re-do my BA with green eyes.

On a past DIY chapter with green armor I went black background with straight mithril silver over. Nice mirrored effect with very little hassle. I've switched to the green layering mentioned above for my BA eyes. A bit more work, but a nicer contrast with the red in my opinion. Silver might be an interesting alternative for DC if you're looking for one.
Yeah the BA lens colour scheme is my favourite.. I'm doing my DC just regular but was thinking of doing them green also as someone mentioned earlier as I have done my recent Chaplin with green eyes and it looks great against the black! I dunno though as the red eyes on DC reflect the flaw I think and the ferosity in CC.
I always used to do DC eyes and Dev eyes red, because I thought green against either black or blue doesn't stand out as much. But I find myself thinking about it more as I am gonna be painting up a squad of DC soon, why would DC have red eye lenses? In the fluff, their armour is painted black on the eve of battle...I don;t think this would include a lens swap for aesthetics sake when they are not likely to return intact anyway haha. so in short, given that for the most part BA are depicted with green lenses, surely the DC would have green as well?

There is that to take into account but DC are made special artificer armour, the bits on their sprue are more elaborate than anything I've ever seen.. I take that bit about their armour being painted black as a metaphor for the final battle they are going to and the mindset they are in due to the flaw taking effect!

Far as I remember it was very literal in 2nd edition haha. Looked upon by the chaplian, organised who was afflicted, and their armour was literally painted and daubed with the red crosses. I supopse BA have ornate armour anyway, thats why there are so many bits on the DC sprue, so it works as a chapter upgrade/decoration set too.

But I digress! Your DC so paint them up as you like! I am still ooohing and aaahing over the colour so I know what you are going through. Red just does look cooler haha. But if you're doing red, you can do the same method I mentioned before with the greens, but going Scab, Blood, Blazing with the white dot...This looks really good too
