Tabgoi
Okay, so I have some buddies looking to get into the hobby. We have done some small scale squad on squad stuff to try and get them used to the rules, turn sequences, movement, things like that. All using my brother's vanilla space marines as we did not want to throw too much at them. Anyways, I thought that perhaps doing a kill team campaign would probably be a good idea so they can get used to some different armies without having to jump in head first and commit a few hundred bucks to the hobby. I have actually been meaning to pick up a current full rulebook which I would assume has the new kill team rules. I figure if they are anything like the old ones it gives me a heck of a reason to do up some sternguards (which if still legal to do I think would be awsome and I have wanted some for my BAs). I figure I do up a good 36 guardsmen or so, maybe paint up my chaos guys, do some custom minis for cool bad guys, maybe get some kill team on kill team going. I have quite a bit of experience running narative campaigns (I usually get picked as GM when ever we run anything) so I am not worried about them getting bored. I just kind of want to know what people are thinking in terms of how good of an idea this is for introducing people to the game. I mean maybe it would be better to just get them to get a small, like 250 point, force together (no vehicles) and introduce them that way. Or I could tell em not to be pansies and dive on in, but I I don't think that would go over so well.
d503
if you roleplay as a group start with inquisitor. Its much cheaper to play (cardboard tokens are okay, graduating to minis) and it will get them hooked on the background and universe, which is 40k's real strength. Plus, if you are a good DM you will LOVE inquisitor. The 40k universe has same very good opportunities for bad guy creation.
BOBMAKENZIE
There are no new kill team rules. Well there is a kill team mission but its not terribly good. I'd look into the many Squad sized skirmish rules sets produced by people online and at the old kill team rules and blend them together alittle bit. Tabgoi
There are no new kill team rules? That was one of my favorite additions that 4th brought. It was also the main reason I was thinking of picking up the actual big rule book as the AoBR one works fine and its much easier to stick in my case. I had thought about Inquisitor, but while the history and story is fantastic, lets admit it, we area really a bunch of pewter crack whores. Its what keeps us coming back over and over again. And in terms of the Inquisitor the cost of one of them can just about cover a whole squad of regular 40k troops. I can adapt the fourth edition rules to make them work, it'll just be a bit harder since they really changed, and I am sure many people have some great starting ideas online. I guess its time for me to get some Sternguards put together then, I was thinking of doing a bit of kit bashing and putting the bolters from the Deathwatch conversion pack on them since they look just awsome. Some extra purity seals and it should be good to go.
JamesI
Isn't Kill Team now in the BAttle Missions book? Its very different than what it was, but its there.

Kill team was all about stories and teams of heroic individuals the kill team in the battle missions is more like a very slightly modified skirmish mission. I like it, it just shouldnt share the same name. In much the same name much of the DE wargear shouldnt have been radically renamed XD or like how Blood Fists really don't need a different name. 1Drop
I'm gonna buy the big rule book when I get my BA codex on Monday, I haven't read the rule book since the 40k box had blood angels on it (was probably 1st or maybe 2nd ed) and things have changed so so much, I'm like a 40k grandad, hahaha (I'm not actually a grandad, I'm 29 but been playing 40k since 10 I think)

I agree entirely with everything you said... the new 'kill team' is fun, but not the same thing. There is Operation Killzone, which is an incredible fan-made kill team game, but I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. Check this out (rules on left column): http://galaxyinflames.blogspot.com/2010/07...kirmish-40.html As an alternative you could get a hold of the Assault on Black Reach mission book that came with the last big edition release. They are not great but would serve your purpose.
Sanguinarian
Sounds like a great idea, Tabgoi, BUT...if you have to provide all of the stuff then there is ZERO commitment from them. Let them buy their own stuff. Start small obviously and then build up. I know all squads are not equal, but I would have everyone at least buy themselves one or two squad boxes of their army choice, Codex and a Special Character that can double as a normal leader at first. That's the minimum investment I would require if I were to start a gaming group. Otherwise, if you bribe them in, you'll have to bribe them back each time. Zero commitment begets zero follow through begets ZERO FUN. Been there, done that. <_<
Tabgoi
Ohh, my plan was only to buy and paint up the antagonists. I was going to make them buy their own kill teams. Maybe a box of troops and bit order what ewlse they need.
