GK Grey (non-metallic) Paint Scheme

I'm planning a grey (non-metallic) paint scheme for my GKs as I just never liked the look of all metal power armor.

In anticipation of the GK release I tried out a couple of paints on some power armor bits I had lyong around as I don't want to experiment on the actual GK models (at 5 models per box they ain't cheap):

Vallejo German Grey - very, very dark grey, almost black on a black primer undercoat. Nice contrast with GW Shining Gold on the details but darker than the scheme I was going for. I'm going to try on a white undercoat this weekend to see how much of a difference it makes.

P3 Greatcoat Grey - I should qualify this by saying that I am an unabashed P3 fanboy. This grey is slightly darker than Codex Grey and looked great on a black undercoat. However, when I painted the details Shining Gold I did not like the combination. I'm thinking of switching to a non-metallic gold like Vallejo Golden Brown shaded with GW Snakebite Leather. I'm also going to try this color on a white undercoat to see how it looks.

GW Codex Grey - lighter grey than P3 Greatcoat Grey, and probably the right highlight color for that paint (although I'm planning on picking up some P3 Fortress Grey for comparison). I didn't try it but I'd imagine this color would contrast nicely with red, on storm bolters for example.

So round two of my painting experiment will be to try the colors above on a white undercoat for comparison. I'm thinking of picking up the GW foundation greys just to try out. I airbrush my basecoats and I'm not sure if these paints will change color when thinned down enough to apply with an AB (I'm using the Model Air version of Vallejo German Grey not the VMC version). I'll post pics of all of my "subjects" once I'm done.

So I'd love some feedback from anyone who has painted their GKs (or other marines) grey. What paints did you use? What color primer? Post some pics if possible.

bearden 441 - thanks, does he list the paints he uses for gold? I'd check myself but I don't have a facebook account!

Yes Sir, he does. Here they are:

NMM Gold

VMC 140 Flat Brown

VMC 135 Beige Brown

VMC 131 Orange Brown

VMC 127 Ochre Brown

VMC 126 Goldbrown

VMC 121 Yellow Ochre

VMC 016 Golden Yellow

VMC 005 Ivory

GW Skull White

Ink Glaze: GW Yellow Ink with a tiny bit of GW Chestnut Ink

I use a simple version:

Vallejo Model Dark Grey (shadows)

Vallejo Model London Grey (basecoat)

Vallejo Model London Grey+Vallejo Model White Grey (50-50) (highlights)

Use Charandon Granite and Boltgun metal for chipping on the plate.

I wash with a mixture of badab black and devlan mud. I've been experimenting with oil paints for my vehicles (burnt umber and black, diluted in mineral spirits) since reading the Imperial Armour: Masterclass. Pretty interesting, looking forward to trying it with GK models.

My gold is:

GW Scorched Brown

GW Shining Gold

GW Burnished Gold

GW ogry flesh or sepia wash

My Red is:

Vallejo Game Terracotta (basecoat)

Vallejo Model Red (equivalent to GW scab red) first highlight

Vallejo Model Vermillion (equivalent to GW blood red) second highlight

For the blue eyes, I'm experimenting with deep blue gouache!!! I've found this works wonder when painting the lines in my Tau vehicles. You paint it in a bit thinned with water, then wipe the excess with a Q-Tip (it doesn't stain until fully dry, unlike acrylic paint) and leave to try overnight. On my vehicles, it makes a "Tron-Like" effect that's quite amazing. I'll give more information when I try it on and actual GK!

Thanks to the power of Google I found this picture of Commander Y's Grey Knights on an unofficial Golden Daemon Winner website:

VMC German Grey is between Dark Grey and Black Grey on the VMC chart so it's no surprise that these GKs are very similar to the darker of the three greys I've tried so far. As I mentioned black grey and shining gold (or the NMM equivalent) contrast nicely, I might have to do a GK test model in this scheme.

I also found this picture of Commander Y's GK BC on CoolMiniOrNot:

This is closer to P3 Greatcoat Grey which is the scheme I had in mind. I prefer this color with the red and white details in the GK scheme over black grey. The highlights are closer to Codex Grey or P3 Ironhull Grey (which I mistakenly referred to as Fortress Grey in my OP - hard to keep all of the names straight between GW/Citadel, P3, VMC).

boreas have you painted up any GKs yet and if so are they closer to black grey or london grey? I saw the picture of your GK Storm Raven (very nice work), which paint did you use as your base grey (the oil paints you mentioned)?

I've got some pics on my blog (can't post them from work, darn!)

It's a test mini, so only the grey and red are using my previous list. I did try NMM gold on this one, but I suck at it and prefer the "real" gold :) It's also cleaner than what I'm looking for, so I'll probably add some scratches and chipping plus finally some weathering using oil paints...

I do recommend those DVDs:

and

http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/paints-a...ig-jimenez.html

They introduce "real" armor modelling. The techniques are very different from what you'll get in Citadel books (which are still pretty good!).

Dude, those threads move fast.... I had to go about 10 pages back to find this one <_< I hope you'll forgive the threadomancy (is it, even after 16 days? Oh well, since it's a fresh corpse, let's call it frankenthreading?) Anyhow, here's my first finished model with my real grey scheme. I didn't go for chipping as the model is already overloaded with gizmos and details and too much would make it crowded.

Also, there's nothing like a picture to pop out missed details. I've got to paint the base's rim!
