Grey Knights project log

"I shall make my penance on the battlefield"

Hi everone

Well like most during this month. I will be starting a Grey Knight army.... along with my Space Wolves for few tournament happen soon & my still on going Blood Angels project which has been posted else where.

This log will be on my Grey Knight army as I aim to possible take them to a few tournament next year. Picking Grey Knight as I use to have a army back when the codex was release, alway like the knight theme look to the models. Like wise when I pick a army my first & formost though on a army is conversion. For those who has seen my Iron Warriors or my Space Wolves will know I enjoy conversion & when aim for a tournament I put a bit more because my main aim is alway the army nominee.

So with my mail order arrive today. I spent some time make a start.

When it come to collecting any army in Warhammer 40,000. I alway aim to start with my two troops & HQ. Reason for this is that the legal stuff of the army list painted & out of the way. Give you that time in case you make any changies to a list. There no point in my view on make say that Elites Thunder Hammer Terminators unit only to find out you will no longer be useing them due to another unit.

On that note I alway work from a army list, 1500pts as my aim. This help on the money side so I can focuse on what units I will be useing along with any bits I will need for conversion. Also help save energy again as why paint the 2x troops & HQ.

Then after that let my play testing take care of how my finish army for a tournament will look & play. Try get my army list posted later on in future updates.

On to the GKs, everthing is still very WIP, still lots of bits to add onto them before they are fully finish.

I'll be useing diffrent style of knight helmets from T face bezerker helmets, Black Templars, Venrable Dreadnought & the Grey Knight them selfs. Also hopeful the photos can show this, I have scratch built a bionic eye onto the T face bezerker helmet. I want sort of a high tech look to my Grey Knights. I think I might model some servo skulls on a few of the Grey Knights though out the army.

Hopeful people can see the backpack where I am useing parts from the Auspex, though be cool again to add a bit of high tech look.

All four

Also forgot to add in. I will be useing Deathwatch Kill team shoulder pads on the squad memeber. Then use the Shield from the Terminators set to act as squad marking. Just really like those Deathwatck Kill team shoulder pads. Which remind me, you can see the Games Day entry I done last year for Duly which had a Grey Knight vs a Chaos Psychier from FW.

I've still to make one more but will get him made tomorrow. I also have a box of Terminators so will try to get my Grand Master made, but keep the other four Terminators to one side for the moment being, they'll be made into Paladins. Possible try to pick up another box of Grey Knights in Power Armour so that way I do have my two troops chose done & can get painting them as soon as possible.

Next update will be as soon as possible.

Hmmm...I was so excited for those GK swords, but seeing them on the model now they look a bit oversized. Oh well, that's my own issue to deal with and it sure isn't your fault here. Great work, and grats on being the (I think) first one to show some new WIP plastic GK here on the BnC ;).

I like the little techno-eye, but what really has me curious is the GS work on the stands. Just how are these fellas gonna get based?

Update time

Mange to work on/off on my Grey Knight though out yesterday & here what I got so far.....

My first test model, which is still WIP

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC08932.jpg

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC08933.jpg

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC08934.jpg

I still got the sword to finish off. I was trying some new stuff out but it did not work out, so going back to my classic Green power weapon style (check out my Space Wolves, Iron Warriors or any other army I have posted in the past & present). I am temp to have gothic letter on the power weapons, make it as though they put a personial oath into the sword while make them.

Also still need to finish off the skull, get the letter done on the Purity Seals

Also need to add a bit more to the highlight with Mithril Silver, though it already been dry brush over the model, just make it a bit stronger.

Strike force

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC08935.jpg

I've still to make another two Grey Knights for this unit. So hopeful get them built later today.

Also here my Grand Master

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC08937.jpg

Still trying to think what I should add to help mark him out as my Grand Master model wise. Just need to search though my bits boxies to see what I can find or come up with to make him stand out a little bit more as my HQ chose.

Also some photos of my Space Wolves that I am working on for the Throne of Skulls April which is in less than two weeks time. Been add a lot more models since they where last posted on the fourms

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC08938.jpg

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC08939.jpg

So try get my last two Grey Knights made up & have them all ready for undercaoting tomorrow. Wed get the squad painted in my local GW store.

The testmodel looks great, as does your SW. Do you have a tut on how to make your PWs? I am prepping my SW for a tournament myself and really dont have a good way of painting PWs or Frost blades.

For power weapons I tend to do

- Chaos Black

- Highlight with Dark Angels Green, make sure this is a thick line highlight

- Highlight with Snot Green but a little bit thiner line wise.

- Highlight with Scorpian Green

Hopeful you can see some of the Power Weapons by here, battle report where my Space Wolves vs Tau in 3350pts. Also some photos of some new SW models I done a few weeks ago.

Just looking that the photo of the test model. Those reeds don't look right in the photos, but real life they look complete diffrent & the way I want them to look. Bit like blood red highlight on red gore, dose not stand out when taken photos. Might try adding some ink wash to try bring them out a bit.

Nice metals on the test mini IP, not too bright, not too dark and just the right amount of contrast between highlighting and shading there. The subtle backpack conversion also works well, fits in with the more out there packs the GK have without being too obvious.

The Wolves are suh-weet too, love the LotD rescuing fallen Marines :)

Agreed. I like the tonal quality of the metals.

Now what's taking so long? Aren't you normally through about 2500 points of an army typically within 48 hours of release??? :(

Yeah, IP is certainly slacking off.

Work harder IP!!! ;)

Great stuff, and for some reason I'm not as offended by the large storm bolter on your painted mini.

Though I am not move though my Grey Knight army as fast. I have been swamp with other models. Fair few heresy stuff by the name of Warhammer Fantasy & some xenos stuff that are not premited on the fourms, note these are not for myself, big wargaming event come up soon in Scotland 7th May.

With the Grey Knight, painting them on Wed.... I pretty much near ran out of stuff to paint other than a few thing for my Blood Angels. So I need to hold some models back. I am not joke on this, barely got much of my own stuff to paint, been struggle until the Grey knight release Sat there. Came down to me adding some extra stuff to my Space Hulk terminators when it came down to painting my own stuff!!! or replace a few models in my Space Wolves due to new conversion idea.

BA stuff I got left to do are pretty much getting done in the house. Just 2x Storm Ravens & object marker really.

Again not painted in the fast amount of time due to I need honsty need somthing to paint on Wed. I have commented to friends that I paint to fast & usely reply is :D

For those that do not know I can paint pretty fast if I chose to. The list of stuff I painted in a fast amount of time would shock most & has almost give my gaming club owner another few hart attack. One exsample has been painting 40 zombies in 30 mins from 10.30pm to 11pm back when I use to work as a GW staffer, the store being a bit of a train trip 40 mins. But when painting those zombies I did not finish work until 7.30pm, I miss that train & had to wait until 8.30pm only to find out that train was not running.

So got the 9pm train which went very very slow due to somthing happen on the line.

Return home that 10.30pm sat down & painted 40 zombies up to 11pm for a event the follow day, which I needed to be in the GW store for 8.30am to set everthing up. So 7am wake up for me. I also had the back then new Daemon codex, which sadily I was not allowed to read on the train. I still find bit from zombies in my back pack to this very day.

On that note this was before GW release the current wash & spray gun.......

As said this is one mere exsample out of many, to many to list. Recent one is if you add my time on my Wolf Wing army, that had taken a week & a half to paint. As said just if you add up the time, as during that time. As during that time, painting my Wolf Wing I also painted 60 skaven in a week, the same week as my Wolf Wing as seen in my sig as I do commission, so was part of that, for someone else. However these where not solid days, it was more what ever time I had spare though out the day that I had toward my own stuff & the hobby.

Just all about planning, trying to spare those moment & make sure that you have a balance with real life, hobby life, work life, family life, social life, etc.... though often one or more will over balance other from time to time. Also I just paint fast when I chose to, alway been like that with my NQ to HND model making course as well & what taught me very well in term of planning the whole balance out each bit of our life.

But I try not to make a habit of painting armies in days.

Update

Time for a update. Feel like agies but I have been working on/off on my Grey Knights. As said a few post above my main focuse on my hobby time was tide up my Space Wolves for the Throne of Skulls tournament in April, Warhammer World Nottingham.

You can now see my battle report here

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...=227752&hl=

As for the Wolves they pick up a Nominee for best army out of seven other people. One of these seven people being my friend spikyjames with his SW army as well.

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/ToS%20April/DSC09208.jpg

While my friend Graham (he on these fourm somewhere) won the ToS April overall with sister of battle & won best sister of battle player.

Along with this my SW also enter a army painting comp in my store during the weekend there which saw me walk away with the award

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/DSC09236.jpg

Then after all this I been really busy for a up & coming wargaming event happen next week painting tons of models. Recently painted 16 kroot in a mere hour & a half!!!!

Anyway onto the Grey Knights.

So far the army getting there & here what I have so far

Note - Just perview the photos there, I'll take better photos in the next update, light not been so great right now ;)

My first strike force is near done

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC09242.jpg

I'm hope on spending Wed in my local GW painting/finish the models as due to this wargame event next weekend, barely got any time in the house right now. On another note been trying to think what I should do for the Left Shoulder pad with the Grey Knight icon, I want to do somthing cool for the background/inner part of the shoulder pad which you can see is current painted Black right now.

My very WIP Purifire unit

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC09244.jpg

Though I said I alway work on 2x troops & hq before going onto other. I am current wanting on a few friends to give me Deathwatch Kill team Shouler pads. Having the Blood Angels pads to one side for my Purifire unit & wanting somthing to paint a while back. I went ahead & got the Purfire unit made & still painting them when time permit.

To try help mark our there rank/from my Strike units, as I want to keep away from the White Helmets that the Eavy Metal have done for there GK force/army.

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC09246.jpg

Grand Master with Paladins

Grand Master

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC09250.jpg

Again I built this unit so I had something to paint for my day off/when I go to my local GW for the gaming night as all this month it been the only time to paint my own stuff right now.

Once this wargame event been & gone I'll be full focuse on the Grey Knights. Aim to try get the Rhino next. Idea wise I will be doing some cool stuff for the doors, try plasticard a =][= Icon on the Rhino hatch, try add some plasticard strip here & there, also got a few of the GK icons from the Storm Raven kit to use.

While the other units, next Sunday going to be spent painting them & finish them.

Leave my Dreadknights for last, allow me time to see what other come up with in term of conversion. I have a few idea right now, but need to have a proper look that the spure & what other have try out.

Also a little perview into some SW I been building as well

Lone Wolf

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC09253.jpg

Was ment for a local tournament come up in June as it was orignaly 1400pts. But they have up the points to 1500pts, so it mean I do not need to change my tournament list, one seen from Throne of Skulls tournament.

Long Fangs

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC09254.jpg

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Grey%20Knights/DSC09255.jpg

Just a small perview on my new Long Fang unit. Just waiting on bits to arrive to make the other eight, be two units of five to help bring my 1500pts SW to 1750pts.

Hope to get the next update on Sunday with the models above being finish & hopeful have a new Rhino by then which if all gose to plan, built & converted.
