Vindicare Assassin: Tank Hunter Extraordinaire?

Recommended Posts

In 4th I'm certain the Vindicare got his 4D6 (and only 4D6) against a monolith and you are probably right that it got a mention in the old FAQ. Where it is definitely stated is the Necron FAQ from 2004 (ie not current). I would query this though, because its refering to the 'old' Vindicare and also 4th Ed. The way it describes the 4D6 is not as a "bonus as such"... What it's saying is that it does not roll 4D6 instead of 1D6, it just rolls 4D6 and thats that. Which does suggest it does not get the extra S3. However, at this point, no snipers were getting S3 to add to their shots (I think it was a flat 2D6 at the time). Sadly the current (2009) FAQ does not really go into detail on Living Metal apart from to say that eg powerfists, *do* get double strength. Perhaps the Daemonhunters FAQ answered the question.

'If fired at a vehicle, the shot has an Armour Penetration value of 3D6.'

Looks like it was just 3d6.

In regards to the value of the Vindicare, I don't think he should be evaluated solely on how much he kills. Instead, pay attention to the ways he indirectly effects the battle. As in real life, snipers are force multipliers. They protect friendly units and accentuate their strengths. An easy example would be killing the power fist or thunder hammer of an enemy squad before a Dreadnaught assaults. Or the removal of invulnerable saves before the same. Or hiding out of LOS but making it risky for an opponent to use a certain avenue of approach. Or reducing the LD value of squad by killing squad leaders. A blob of 30 guardsman is fodder after the Commissar is killed. Pinning a unit can be very timely.

All in all, with the ability now to reliable penetrate vehicles and not be limited by ammo, I think the Vindicare can be very useful.

Tau players may rapidly decide to stop using Ethereals against Grey Knights now ^_^

Tau players may rapidly decide to stop using Ethereals against Grey Knights now :P

Are there actually any Tau players that use Ethereals? I should hope they'd long ago wizened up to their uselessness.

Seen a few, some folks just like them i guess.

Excuse me, but Living metal in the Necron FAQ specificaly lists the Turbo Penitrator round as n exception to Living metal rules.

Uh, no it dosen't. Not in the current 2009 version of the FAQ on the GW website. I just read the whole thing, and it dosen't, as I mentioned above. As I said above, I wouldn't consider what it said to necessarily be correct either, on the grounds that the Necron FAQ was written before the current GK book, ie things and even RAI may have changed since it was written.

BigDunc is very right in the saying the Vindicare is worth more than what it can kill, though of course, if it can kill a Land Raider or a Monolith, then it certainly IS worth a lot. He is definitely the best at what he does. As long as you dont expect him to kill masses of troops, or stay alive when being pressured, it's all good. Could he pin the whole unit for a considerable amount of time until someone else can deal with it though? He can certainly try.
